Carl is an excellent tutor. We hired him for sat prep plus his ability to help our son catch up on his studies. He is very knowledgeable on what kids need help on and how to engage them. Our son loves working with him and wants to learn. We chose Carl because he has tremendous experience as an educator plus has an east coast background which was extremely important to us. He has proven to be a wise choice and we are so happy to be working with him. A month into this we are very happy. As parents, we have made the right decision. Carl is an excellent teacher. He is tough, challenging and inspiring. Even as two ivy-league graduates, we respect his advice on our son in regards to grammar and literature. Overall, we are extremely pleased with our decision.

I am extremely grateful for the tutoring services Thinque Prep provided my son. The evidence is in the results, Thinque Prep was able to raise my son’s ACT score by 10 points from his initial practice test and assessment. Having the ability to frequently take practices tests (any weekend) as part of the tutoring service helped identify the weaknesses to focus on and to track progress. When my son’s progress started to plateau (5 point improvement), Joyee met with my son and I to determine what needed to be done to continue his progress. Additional tutoring tools offered by Thinque prep such as on-line home study programs and in office drills helped my son continue his progress. The entire staff truly cares about the success of it’s students and will do whatever they can to ensure that success. My son is multi-sport athlete, scheduling tutor sessions was quite a challenge. Jen the Office Manager was very helpful in accommodating my son’s schedule. Thinque Prep’s rates are very reasonable, especially when compared to other tutoring services of this caliber. If you are looking to improve your child’s ACT score, I highly recommend Thinque Prep. Pete Orange, CA

We chose Elite and were so happy we did! My son struggled in math and he needed more support than the school offered. College prep is tough, I couldn't even help him! Haha Well, we called Elite and Eric matched him up with Tony. We liked that Tony came to our house for a free session before I had to commit to ordering sessions. I always wondered how that worked so you know your kid will for sure like the tutor and want to learn! We're very pleased, thanks again.

Cindy is an absolute visionary. I am a senior in high school, and I met Cindy a few months before I began this school year. My strengths academically are mainly in reading, writing, social studies, and philosophy, but Cindy has enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for mathematics, science, and my capabilities in problem solving as a whole. When I first met Cindy, I was in desperate need of a math tutor, but what I received was more than I could have ever imagined. Aside from her outstanding mathematical capabilities, Cindy has served as my mentor, ultimate problem solver, entrepreneurial guru, and ultimate inspiration throughout my college prep and application process. As a fellow performer, and actress, Cindy also has helped me explore my passion for theatre, and expand it to become a flourishing intrigue with anthropology, psychology, and motivational speaking. She is literally the reason that I am now travelling as a motivational speaker/ Body Positive facilitator to youth, ranging from middle school to high school. In offering her invaluable time, ambitious mindset, and incredibly compassionate demeanor, she has allowed me to find my true passions, and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Cindy is beyond this world amazing. Whether to call her an angel, an oracle, a goddess, a reincarnated Albert Einstein, or any other form of awe, I am not worthy to concretely say. However, I can attest that Cindy has absolutely changed my vision for myself and the world around me, my societal views and aspirations, as well as having enhanced my mathematical and test taking capabilities. Truly, Cindy is the most wonderful, kind, creative, talented, and intelligent essence, one could ever hope to meet or aspire to become.

Sarajane has tutored my kids (currently in 3rd and 6th grade) for the past two years in various areas of study, including math, reading/writing and ISEE prep. In every case, she has come well-prepared, with innovative ways to teach the material. For example, when I asked her to help my 3rd grader with reading aloud, she found some reader’s theater passages to make reading fun and engaging. My child loved it! She always comes prepared with a well thought out, customized study plan and related study guides, designed to make each lesson as effective as possible. Thanks to her help and support, my 6th grader has blossomed into a confident math student. She also helped my 6th grader raise her ISEE scores substantially. She is always professional, on time and well-prepared. What can I say, Sarajane rocks our world and I recommend her without reservation!

I started working with Stable Genius Prep in January to prepare for the General GRE. We assessed right away that the Quantitative material was my weak spot, and where I'd need the most help. I'm the type of person who really has to be able to understand something before I can master it, and I don't naturally think mathematically. In other words I can't just memorize formulae and when to apply them. Andrew was excellent with this. Even when I got answers right, he would make sure to go over with me what the principles were behind the problem. He has clearly had much experience tutoring pupils. Perhaps what had the most impact on me, and on my desire to work hard, was the patience he exhibited; it may have not even registered with him, but I noticed it. In the beginning I worked at an excruciatingly slow pace through everything from Arithmetic to Statistics and Probability. It took two hours just to get through ten problems. By the end of our prep, I was able to work through the same number of questions in about 15-20 minutes, and at a high level of difficulty. While my essay writing is normally solid, it was difficult to exhibit that within the 30 minute time limit. Andrew reviewed my practice essays with me and really helped me to develop strategies to write strong essays that follow the test instructions within the time allotted. Ultimately my Math score went from the 48th percentile up to the 83rd percentile! I couldn't be happier with my experience, and with the results we were able to get. I say "we" because by the end I felt like we were a team, with Andrew as my coach. He is a master of the material, and he understands how to teach it effectively. I definitely recommend Stable Genius Prep to anyone looking not only to get over a certain threshold, but to really maximize their potential and do as well as they possibly can!

My son who is a high school senior needed someone to review his personal statement for his UC college applications. I requested a writing tutor and Victor Solis of Initia Test Prep responded within the hour! I reviewed his profile and his website and it seemed good. I was impressed of how Victor reviewed my son's essays in a short amount of time and gave important recommendations. He also answered any questions that I had about UC schools, admissions, etc. I highly recommend Victor Solis and Initia Test Prep.

Evan began working with our daughter to prep for the ISEE High School Placement Test. He was patient and very structured in attacking the materials that needed to get covered for her test prep. They made very good progress and she improved significantly in understanding how to take the test and the materials. She ended up with very good scores on her test. In the process of working with our daughter, we asked if he could help with our 5th grade son who struggles with reading comprehension. He began working with our son in helping him develop a better understanding of what he is reading. My son has improved since working with Evan and is enjoying reading much more than before he started working with Evan.

Hands in the air for the BEST LSAT TUTOR PERIOD. I was weary of spending more money but I heard she was especially gifted with teaching applied logic to people who "should" be scoring higher but aren't. After our 3 sessions, we changed my entire approach and I am officially +11 from last summer. I told her she should double her price, she changed the trajectory of my life --I'm going to Vandy! She can take the most complex abstract concepts and convey them in a way that suddenly *clicks* without any condescence or sublte remarks for having taken two paid-for prep classes already. She's a Polly-Anna for late-bloomers/mom's/40+ and everyone else going back to school and I highly recommend her.

    About

I am an education professional who spent years in the college readiness sector. I have been a test prep tutor since 1997. Even with other full-time jobs, I always return to tutoring as I love helping kids improve their scores on high-stakes exams.

    About

I'm an MBA graduate of the UCLA Anderson School of Management (class of 2009). I have three years of GMAT teaching experience with a major test prep company, and have taught GMAT classes at the University of San Diego and Alliant International University. My GMAT score was a 710. My rates for GMAT tutoring are much lower than you will find from the major test prep companies. I can also design individual study plans tailored to each student's timetable. In my opinion, students can benefit more from focused one-on-one tutoring than from expensive group classes. My students have been pleased with their results.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
