About
Smart Bodies was founded in 1991 as an independent company that provides clients with comprehensive health and fitness programming. A certified and credentialed trainer, I furnish general and sport specific conditioning programming, injury prevention training, and rehabilitative conditioning for clients with specific post-rehab recuperative needs.
Smart Bodies begins your training with either a Functional Movement Screen(FMS) or Three-Dimensional Movement Analysis and Performance System (3DMAPS). A primary goal in any exercise program is to prevent injury. This comes before fat loss, weight loss, muscle building, or performance enhancement. If you get hurt, none of the aforementioned matter, because you cannot train.
The FMS and 3DMAPS are the most innovative methods designed to assess how the body functions as a holistic unit. Measuring entire body’s mobility (flexibility, range of motion) and stability (strength, control of motion) they establish a baseline and identify a Relative “Success Code” specific to each individual.
Afterwards, you and I will determine the program most suitable for you based upon, your fitness goals and personalized success code. You should expect that gradual progress in achieving your goals is the normative. Our bodies adjust to physical stresses slowly. It’s important, therefore, that you remain patient during the entire process and expect results over an extended period. The keywords in physical training are patience, consistency, and more patience!
Exercise sessions are conducted at a chosen facility, in home, or outdoors and last approximately one hour. Please appear on time and ready to exercise. Client sessions are scheduled on the hour, and your cannot extend into another client’s appointed time period. At-home training sessions and Customized Monthly Training programs can be scheduled by special arrangement.
Your Trainer: Katherine Coltrin, MS, FAFS, CSCS,
The client’s education begins with what a good trainer knows and practices. I have an extensive background in exercise science, including a Baccalaureate of Science in exercise physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and Master of Science degree in kinesiology (science of movement) from California State University, Long Beach. In addition, I hold nationally recognized certification (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, completed a fellowship in Applied Functional Science at the Gray Institute, hold Level I &II FMS certification and am certified with the American College of Sports Medicine to present 3-day workshops to certify trainers. I am dedicated to providing my clients with fitness programming that incorporates the latest research and best practice methods.
In addition to being a Movement Practitioner, I, swim, rock climb, kayak, and mountain bike in national athletic competitions. In order to remain up to date and to improve my own physical movement, I utilize a specialist as well. What I do in the gym and outside prepares me for the rigors and demands of life and work. Building a solid movement foundation is the minimal prerequisite to successful performance and continued health.

I've known katherine for roughly 15 years, as a trainer and a friend. In both capacities she is truly outstanding. For the purposes of this review, her abilities as a trainer are unsurpassed and transcend anything else available. The term "personal trainer" really doesn't do her justice. Whether your objectives are to find someone to help you with getting healthy, getting fit, getting fitter or to prepare for an particular event, Katherine is without peer.
I was a competitive "team sport" athlete for the first part of my life and in my middle ages I set my sights on endurance athletics, first marathons, than triathlons. Katherine was instrumental in preparing me for my first marathon and triathlons and without her I would have never gone in to compete in multiple events including, without limitation, 10 Ironman triathlons. Now, after a couple of years off, as I prepare to do my my 11th Ironman, the first person -- the ONLY person -- I have turned to for training help is Katherine. No matter what your goal, you'd be wise to do the same.

It is a true privilege to work with Katherine. She has a mastery over applied functional science and movement. She utilizes her expertise to tailor exercises to meet you exactly where you are. She is even more unique because she both understands and appreciates the behavioral aspect of physical rehabilitation and progress. If you are lucky enough to live in the area and can train with her, do it. Katherine has helped me rehabilitate from rock bottom and changed my life.
