Cristi is the best in her craft and career choice. She deffitntly cares more than any other therapist, I've ever met by far... I've had the pleasure of working with her for some time now and I appreciate what she has taught me. She's very experienced with all walks of life and I think she would fit anybody's personality. I don't like telling people I'm in therapy but I've began too enjoy and love sharing my story with her. She's helped me a lot.She goes above and beyond the call of duty and she checks in on a weekly basis even when it's the weekend and off days she still listens and helps. Cristi always makes me feel special and really good. Since I started seeing her I decided to attend cosmetology school if it weren't for her I probably wouldn't be following my dreams and I would be dreading my life , like I was previously. Cristi Also has helped me find my voice in time and now that I have found my passion, I'm going to stick with it. Follow your heart and the passion will come and she is deffiently passionate about her work and her clients. She always makes me feel at ease and it's so easy to talk with her it's like talking to my family but she's not family at all but I consider her a great mentor and friend. If anybody wants a friend in an therapist I would highly recommend her. I have suggested her to a few of my close friends that deffiently would benefit from her.

My therapist, Paul Rieker, has made a tremendous difference in my life! After only three (2 hour sessions) he was able to help me unlock the issues and move forward into a fulfilling, productive life that is now void of fears and insecurities. He is very honest and genuinely cares for his partients. He is more concerned about helping others than racking up expensive therapy sessions. He is very affordable and I definitely recommend him.

Vili knows how to help a person shape up in a healthy way (without injury, without crazy unsafe diets or pills). More than that, his kind, positive attitude inspires a person to keep going, even if you thought you'd never be able to get lean and strong (or to make that last rep)! If you want a mean drill sergeant, look elsewhere. If you want to train and feel happy and accomplished, come to Vili!

Working with Alik was a really pleasant experience! I've been to psychotherapists in the past and never felt truly comfortable or I felt like maybe they weren't offering actionable items to take away after the session. But Alik really seemed to LISTEN and UNDERSTAND me, he gave me actionable tips to walk away with, I even wrote down some of his words of wisdom on a sheet of paper so I could repeat it word for word later for someone that I'm having a current conflict with. I wanted to get his words exactly right, that's how valuable they are! He also showed me some practical breathing and meditation techniques, which were super helpful and I hadn't tried before. I am going through a current huge change in my life right now, thinking about moving countries for love. Alik listened without judgment, complete patience, and a way of looking at the entire situation more holistically. He feels not only like a competent psychotherapist, but a true confidant and wise beyond his years and training. Thank you, Alik! I'll definitely be back.

I was having severe pains in my arm and neck for quite a while. Someone recommended Helena and after a few sessions her Reiki healing and massage on my neck took care of the pain. I go to her twice a month to make sure it does not repeat. I would recommend her to anyone.

My son has had anger issues since he was 5yrs old as well as depression and high anxiety, he is now 17. We've been to other therapists over the years and nothing was helping and he was starting to rage with his anger. Since we have been seeing Jenny for the last year, his whole demeanor, attitude, and the way he looks at things has changed. We talk and communicate a lot more, he expresses things to me that he didn't before, he's more social with friends inside and outside of school. He can go in completely angry and upset and by the time they're done he's a whole new person! She has worked wonders and I've referred so many of my friend's kids and others to her. She was definitely an answer to my prayers!

    • I have been to several therapists in the past and am usually very skeptical of life coaching and therapy When I began phone sessions with Grace, she was able to help me discover what was really at the bottom of my concerns and how I viewed the world. She gave me guidance to start me on a journey of self introspection. Grace very quickly helped me feel that the road to self-development and happiness is a rewarding one in which I have a trustworthy ally. She helped me understand my needs for stability, become successful in my home and personal life and I have become a stronger person because of her. I highly recommend Grace.

Cindy is a thoughtful and talented therapist. We worked closely together in a psychiatric clinic treating clients with complex psychological and substance abuse problems and I was always impressed by her skill and professionalism. Cindy is the first person I think of to refer my medication management clients struggling to find fulfillment in their lives and relationships. In my career I haven't seen many therapists that can truly treat a whole family, but Cindy's training and experience make her well suited for just that.

Finding a therapist can often be a difficult task, but I would recommend Stacey to absolutely anyone. She is compassionate, calm and very skilled in what she does. Her desire to help is reflected in her approach to conversations. She conducts herself in a professional manner, but has an innate ability to connect to people. My advice is to call Stacey today and get started on the path to understanding and appreciating yourself.

Absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship and we only see each other once a month. I needed a therapist who could squeeze us in on the following day, a Saturday, when my boyfriend was in town. At first, when John informed me that he was completely booked on Saturday, I dejectedly said thank you and was going to hang up the phone. Then, I was very surprised and grateful that John was still willing to take the time to hear my concerns and provide feedback. He even offered to speak with my boyfriend so he could hear both sides of the story. My boyfriend, who was very reluctant to see a therapist, called me after his talk with John and was more willing to attend the session as well! Because my bf agreed to only attending one session, I did not want to risk seeing an ineffective therapist, so I begged John to see us an hour before his normal business hours and offered to pay extra for the inconvenience. John agreed to meet us super early in the morning at no extra cost! We arrived 15 minutes before our scheduled time and immediately began our session. John had my boyfriend and me facing each other and helped facilitate the dialogue between us. He provided pointers on what words to avoid, how to listen actively, show appreciation, and how to make each other feel understood and safe during conflict. The session was emotional (in a good way!) and in the end, we were both overwhelmed with hope and positive energy! John was very engaged and passionate about helping us. He even gave us a book called Getting the Love You Want that he thought would be helpful for us. Such a small gesture, but I was incredibly touched at the thoughtfulness and genuine care John showed from beginning to end. I cannot thank him enough! My boyfriend and I are excited for our next argument so we can practice what John taught us. We can't wait to see John again next month!

    About

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THERAPY Whatever your problem, challenge, trauma or pain, the power to change exists within you. I believe an effective therapist’s job is to support your shift, not to create it for you. Being with clients session after session, I find the persons who have positive movement are the ones who show up every week — seeking collaborative solutions — and try them out between sessions. Whether you’re familiar with the therapy experience, or just hoping to find a place to provide some helpful solutions during a difficult time, I can help you make your desired “shifts”. Together, we can mutually create a safe space to discover new ways of looking at things and make progress toward your goals and desires.

The Keys to Joy-Filled Living was created from his handouts of tested and proven exercises and methods.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
