Working with Lisa-Beth was such a pleasure! Very kind, very professional, and such a diligent worker. I really felt like she cared about what I wanted as a customer. We both live on different sides of the city and she was very accommodating with meeting me at a midway point that would be convenient for the both of us. I'm a college student and even though I have not yet graduated, I really wanted to have a professional resume that I could 'wow' future employers and networking opportunities with. Upon our interaction Lisa-Beth listened intently and really got a feel of how I wanted to portray myself as a professional, and she translated that perfectly onto my resume. I couldn't be happier with the finished product! One thing that I really liked was the fact that Lisa-Beth kept in contact throughout our whole transaction, be it through email, phone, or text, she was always reachable and made sure to keep me updated. I'm very thrilled to have stumbled on to Maverick Consulting and I will definitely be using Lisa-Beth and her amazing talent in the future!

Carl was referred to us by a very happy, satisfied student. He has been tutoring my Junior daughter in Algebra 2. She has always been challenged in Math and saves all homework till last. Carl has been a "spark" in getting her to not "hate" it so much. He comes prepared, energetic and dedicated to gaining a clear understanding of the topic, while interjecting humor into this very dry subject. Carl has been instrumental in my daughters improved Algebra 2 grade! Hurray!

I cannot say enough about Thinque Prep and Joyee Lin. He is dedicated to his students success and does a very thorough job of preparing them for the ACT or SAT test. My son, Zack, who is very bright but requires a lot of patience worked with Joyee over the summer and brought his composite ACT score up from 30 to 33. His math score increased a full 4 pts. and he scored a 35 in English. Thinque Prep has other services related to tutoring and college application preparation. Zack will be working with Joyee on his college application essays. Joyee is in California and we are in Texas but this was never an issue as the sessions are done via video chat. The office manager Jen was great to work with and the appointment process was easy to navigate. I found the rates to be very competitive for like services. If there was a way to give extra stars I would!!

Daniel has tutored me through 2 years of college math including, calculus 2, calculus 3, linear algebra, and differential equations. He helped me on a weekly basis with homework assignments and preparing for tests. The way he taught cleared up all of my questions from lecture and changed my approach to math for the better. Thanks to Daniel's methods and thorough explanations, I earned A's in all my classes. If you seek a solid understanding of math and a professional tutor, I highly recommend Daniel.

Daniel was very professional and went above and beyond to give the tutoring help I needed in a somewhat obscure math topic, which included him spending time researching and working through the problems before the tutoring session to ensure that he could answer all of my questions. I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a quality math tutor who invests himself in your success. Thanks again for all the help Daniel!!

I am so thankful we found Jeff!!! We had worked previously with a different SAT tutor who clearly didn't know what he was doing. Although Jeff was priced higher than some of the other tutors on Thumbtack, I wanted to see if spending a little more would make a difference. It did - we just got the scores back, and my son raised his score by 400 points! I cannot recommend working with Jeff enough. My son loved having him come to the house. We will miss Jeff, but I hope others can have the type of experience we did. You won't regret it!

I have worked long and hard with Kenneth, my tutor from elite home tutoring. I originally thought working with a tutor while in college was foolish. I'm surrounded by people who I thought would be eager to help. Kenneth is a teacher who helps people like me in his free time. The difference is that Kenneth is more interested in my success than my classmates who are more interesryed in partying. Advanced calculus is difficult so I would say kens help is worth it.

Jenny tutored me a few times helping me prepare for my midterm exam, before I met her I was pretty much lost and didn't know where to start. She went through everything I was unsure of and made sure I understood before we moved on. She is punctual, polite and a great math tutor. I took my mid term today and I feel very confident about it thanks to her, highly recommended.

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

Bert Howard is an intelligent, friendly, and understanding person. I have known Bert Howard since I was about 7 or 8. I am now 24 years old and still call him Mr. Bert! He tutored me for over 12 years. Not only was he my tutor and mentor, he became a dear family friend. Before I met Bert, I was not the best student. My grades were very poor and I had a hard time focusing and understanding what was being taught in school. My parents were very concerned that I would not be able to go to the next grade. The were starting to give up on being able to find someone to help me improve academically. They took me to Sylvan, Kumon, and many other tutors. However, none of them were able to help me improve in school until we found Bert Howard. With Bert’s patience, empathy, and determination, he was always able to find and utilize a variety of techniques to help me comprehend and actually learn math, as well as other subjects, in a way that I could understand. Whenever I started to get frustrated or wanted to give up, he would always encourage me to keep moving forward. Whenever I would lose focus and motivation, he would always find new ways, like a reward system or some sort of game to keep me interested and want to learn. I guess my point is that he never gave up on me and I am so grateful that. Because of Bert, I was able to improve academically and further my education. I have now received my B.A in Communication Disorders and Sciences and my certificate to be a Speech Language Pathology Assistant. Currently, I am trying to get into a Master’s program in Speech Language Pathology. I highly recommend Bert Howard. He is an amazing tutor!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
