Mr. Moreno was really really good. He knows his stuff. Very professional and very thorough. He cleaned up after himself which a lot of workers don't do and I like that. My satisfaction was guaranteed. I would definitely recommend him to my neighbors and I would definitely hire him again.

Roger did an absolutely amazing job and was so easy to work with from the very start. He was extremely flexible when it came time to performing the work and came three days in a row to complete the project. At no point did he raise the price from his original quote due to the labor taking a little longer than planned as different problems popped up along the way. His pricing was extremely reasonable and I never felt like he was trying to take advantage of our lack of knowledge of the issues he was working on. Our family will definitely be using Roger again!

Houman came to evaluate my project for an IKEA kitchen installation on a short notice. He was very accommodating when scheduling an appointment, called from the road about very short delay and arrived on time. His estimate was not the lowest, but he said it was negotiable. He approached the project with professionalism and the desire to meet my needs. Even though he didn't do my project (as I chose an IKEA contractor), I was impressed by him.

One I day clicked the switch for my garbage disposal and... nothing. Called AO Plumbing and George was quick to respond. He was presentable, brought the replacement part and exchanged it quickly. George gave me a reasonable price for the part and labor. In a world where there are tradesman are trying to take advantage of people who need help, George stands out with integrity. 5 Starr recommended.

Installation of flooring. I was not going to install in the kitchen flooring because of a cabinet that sits right above my fridge. Mike the owner said he would move the cupboard up an inch so the flooring and the cupboard would still leave room for the fridge. No problem and free of charge! How great right? He had his laborers do the flooring BEFORE and then told me he was unable to move the cabinet. Since he couldn't leave my fridge in the middle of the kitchen floor, he had his guy force it into place and cracked the cabinet. NOT only that, there was a vent that was suppose to go just under the front portion of the fridge which was already cut out....but now could not fit into the hole because the fridge was too tight against the upper cabinet. So...he had a piece of flooring cut and put into the hole with the grain going in the opposite direction!!!!!!!!! I now have a cracked and ruined cabinet, a floor with patchwork and will never be able to move my fridge for cleaning behind and under. I can only imagine what damage was done to the new flooring under the fridge. BTW, I work for a union contractor so the laughs on me.

I had a projector installed but the tech that came out said that the covering of the wires were not included and that he would come back. He never did. So I spoke to a few techs on Thumbtack and I found Mark to be the most knowledgeable. He asked the right questions and was in constant communication with me. He came out within a few hours after we spoke and provided me with a receipt for the parts and labor we agreed to ahead of time. Thinking that it would only take an hour (in my mind) to complete Mark spent over 2 hours but never requested more than what we agreed to. He was very professional and thorough and we were very pleased with the outcome. We paid him double what we agreed as he deserved it. Highly recommend him!

Contacted and received an immediate response. Tenant wanted to occupy the property in 3 days. They took the job, even though they had another in progress. Had workers working through the night to complete water damage and burn repairs, sand and refinish 760sq ft of flooring in time for the tenants to move in. Also came in with a great price which matched my lowest bid. Exceptional work. I will use them again to complete my personal residence in a couple of months. Very impressed and can't recommend highly enough.

John has been my go to handyman for the past few years. He has an eye for detail and is very meticulous. Other carpenters who have seen his work have commented on the quality of his craftsmanship. He charges more than others, but it’s well worth it.

Tim did an excellent job, he is an extremely hard worker and was very polite and easy to work with. We wish every contractor we've used had been as professional and up-front as Tim was. He was able to take our vision and combine it with his experience and knowledge to give us exactly what we needed. It is a beautiful cabinet and it looks like it has always been part of the room.

This was a fence installation and repair job. Chris responded very quickly to the service request. Although he showed up on time Chris was polite and professional. He fixed the broken door handle in 30 minutes. Charged the 3-hour minimum labor fee (perfectly reasonable) and left an itemized receipt and his business card. Will use Chris Handyman & Cleaning LA again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
