I was extremely impressed with the service Greenside gave me. The gentleman who came to clean my carpets was very professional and knowledgeable. He was on time, very thorough and explained everything to me prior to the cleaning. I have used many carpet cleaning companies in the past and they have never provided me with such good service. My carpets look like new again. I would highly recommend this company to all my friends and family.

Shegun was very informative. He took his time answering questions. Always seemed very concerned for our well being. I did interview other mold remediation companies but my instinct kept taking me back to Shegun. I would hire him again because he is there to satisfy the customer no matter what it takes. Be honest with him with any concerns and you will have the same experience I had.

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

American Castles Mike To the RESCUE!!! The water heater at my rental property burst on a Friday afternoon causing some major damage to the house. The renters were furious because their items got damaged and the house wasn't inhabitable after that. On the inside, the bathroom wall and under stairway closet were all soaking wet and drywall/carpet/padding had to be removed immediately to prevent mole build up. On the garage side where the water heater located, the entire wall was destroyed. so I called my home insurance who provided me with their preferred plumber who quoted an additional $540 out of pocket on top of what the insurance was going to cover just so he can bring up the water heater installation to code! He told me that it will take him 1+ week to order the water heater (duh...get one from Home Depot take only 1hr...which is what Mike did) and that he can install a temporary water heater and will charge $137/wk! He also referred me to a water damage restoration company which I was not too happy with either. Since it was an emergency and I went with that company. They came in and ripped out all the wet drywall without caring for any molding; especially for garage doors and closet doors! It seemed like what ever the water heater didn't damage, they did. They also broke my water heater intake shut off valve. damage the water heater over flow copper pipe. All I can say is I will not use them again! Back to the plumber, something was smelling fishy about his quote and so I called and questioned this plumber. His response was "Well, I will need to flush out the gas line and calibrate your water pressure...upgrade to the new California safety quote...put in earthquake straps...install new vent line since the new water heater nowaday don't use the old vent line!". I was not convinces so I started to Google for good local contractor and AMERICAN CASTLES (Mike Tay is the owner) came up from Thumtack along with few others from other websites. I contacted them and they came in and provided me quotes. Mike was the last one I contacted. He arrived within 30min. He checked out the damages and explained to me what needs to get done sequentially to get everything back in proper operation for my tenants. Mike is very knowledgeable and very patient in explaining things. I told him what the plumber had said, he laughed and told me the whole thing was a rip off and a scam! Another crock of bull**** and advised me against it. He told me to call my insurance company to inquire about using other plumber. Sure enough I was offered the "cash out" option which I didn't even know was available. I took that option and went with Mike for the repair. Mike knows how important it is for my tenants to get the hot water running again once the water damage restoration company completed the clean up/dry out the area (took 1 week). As soon as that company removed their equipment, Mike had his crew come in the next day (Saturday) to repair the garage dry wall and finished the installation of the new water heater and brought it up to code on safety on Sunday! He even added the water pan and installed drain pipe for me. I didn't even know such a thing exists (talk about quality...he treats it like repairing his own home!). The best part is his charge for the whole job including new water heater, earthquake straps, valve, drain pan, vent and new connection is far way less than what that plumber was going to charge me. I loved the fact he took the time to show me how things should be done up to code and what works for my situation instead of just giving a price and walking away. He did an awesome job! Unfortunately my landlord insurance's deductible was so high, I asked Mike to give me a quote for fixing the damage in the garage and inside the house. Mike's quote was very competitive and the best part is he is always willing to work with me knowing my situation (thx Mike). My bathroom paint is 16 years old so it was a challenge to match the paint for the new wall. After only quoting me for painting a small wall inside the bathroom, Mike decided on his own to paint the entire bathroom without charging for it. Now that what I call TAKING PRIDE IN YOUR WORK AND STICKING TO YOUR WORD!!! My summary is, Mike successfully completed the entire job and installation in four days. I would highly recommend Mike to anyone and will definitely be using and referring him to everyone I know.

Our pantry ceiling collapsed from a flood of water coming from our attic. Jay quickly identified the problem as a plugged condensate line from the attic air conditioning unit. Jay flushed the line quickly and charged a reasonable fee. Jay also referred us to the restoration contractor who dried our pantry and replaced the damaged insulation, drywall, and ceiling. I would definitely hire Jay again. In fact, we did hire Jay to replace our hot water heater and water pressure regulator valve and turn-off valve leading into our house.

We hired AtoZ Construction after meeting with several remodeling companies and are very happy that we did. We had a big home project which included a room addition and a bathroom and were very picky on our screening process. AtoZ Construction surpassed all the other companies from the initial consultation, they were professional, took all the time to fully understand our expectations and needs and their price was very competitive. The project was finished on time, and was a smooth process with no surprises or delays. Rami the Meneger was supervising the entire process and was always available for us to answer questions or make slight changes if needed. We met with the designer who provided us a 3D design which was very helpful in seeing the final outcome. If you are on the fence on this one, AtoZ Construction is the way to go. We highly recommend them to anyone and love the final product of our project.

This letter will serve as a highly recommendation for the service that La Roca Builder did for us, on our new home construction. They have a great team that took care of all the guess work of home construction. They made sure we we’re always informed on how the city works with submitting plans and time frame of completion. We interviewed many contractors, but most of them couldn’t take care of the entire project and that’s why we hired them. Our home looks beautiful and we owe it all to Christian and his team from LA Rocca Builders not to mentioned J Balian Construction and Grandeur Construction, 3 teams, each team took care of different aspects of the projects all under one Roof; they all work together amazing! we love that they took care of it all, that made our new home build possible. 5 stars all the way Eddie Steeples Pacific Palisades P.S they wanted me to include that I was the actor that was on the show “My Name is Earl” aka “Crabman” And I gladly said yes, lol. Thanks Christian!

We recently had our master bedroom and bathroom completely remodeled by Curtis construction services. From the first meeting that we had with Daniel, We found him to be very professional, honest, knowledgeable and very skilled in all the aspects of our remodeling project. Daniel was very useful in helping us by selecting and buying all the lighting and plumbing fixtures, vanities and built in shelfs, tiles and hardware. Daniel kept the work flowing very smoothly, with no problems and most of it, he made sure to keep us informed about any daily and weekly progress. We really appreciated all the attention to details and to the high quality of his workmanship and mainly to the working crew that did all the hard work. They all were very easygoing people, professional and it was a truly pleasure to have them working in our home. We would highly recommend Curtis construction and services for any remodeling projects.

Exactly how you would hope a restoration job will go, their team are pros and made me feel comfortable about the accident in the second floor bathroom that made a soaking mess of my living room walls and floor and furniture.... they walked me through the process, finished the job smoothly and on time, and left the place looking better than it was before the flood. Big thumbs up !

I've had the team at WDZ and BAB help us extensively. When we found a significant amount of water damage and mold underneath the kitchen of our new home, we were devastated. WDZ and BAB walked us through the process and took care of any and all issues. We were so impressed with their work ethic and professionalism we had them remodel our entire house. Hard to find trustworthy and honest people in construction, especially in LA. I would use them again.

I called West coast around 5.30 pm once I got home from work finding my carpeting in the master bedroom saturated from water. They were on the first page of Google under water damage and they arrived quicker than the 45 minutes they promised. The guys protected my floors and dried the carpet. They were courteous and professional and had no problem waiting to be paid by my insurance. I will recommend them to my friends and family. Danny Foster.

I lost hope in my carpet and thought I would pay an arm and a leg to remove it and have to lay laminate. Rudy was honest with me and said he could restore the original wood floors for a much better price. Definitely will consider doing business with Golden Bridge Construction again. I am so pleased.

Roman and Amy from Maxi serve honestly are one of the best companies I have worked with. We own a 7,000 square foot facility and they were able to give an excellent price and finished the job quickly. They are certified and go through every detail very carefully. Their work is tested, certified, and guaranteed. The have a full professional crew with all the right tools/equipment to execute the project in a professional and efficient manner. They are clean which is a big bonus since my company builds retail stores. Roman will take care of you and look out for your best interests. Down to earth guy. A+ service.

Bo did a great job in restoring a segment of a brick retaining wall in our backyard. He arrived on time and went straight to work. He was very respectful to our backyard and left it in perfect shape when he was finished with the project. We're very happy with the results, and we will use him again for an upcoming project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
