I just found this app and this was my first hire from the app. Andres quickly responded to my request for a 40 ft Queen Palm tree trimming quote. He came by and gave me a quote that was well below other quotes I had received. He came out on Sunday and did an amazing job and was in and out within 45 mins. That was from the time he pulled up to leaving. He was very professional and made sure I was happy with the job and clean up before he left. Since my experience was so good, I have hired him to maintain my lawn and surroundings as well. His quote for that, was also better than the quotes I had received from other lawn care specialists in the area. I would recommend Andres and his company to all!!

Domingo and his team did an excellent job at making our backyard look like new again. Backyard had almost two years of neglect with overgrown plants and dead grass and trees. Domingo gave a very reasonable price for the whole job and took only a day to complete. They cleaned up and also had good ideas and suggestions about plants and placement. Definitely hiring him again and calling him back for monthly maintenance. He is also very courteous.

Custom made deck for our backyard. Extremely happy! Renato worked with us for a couple of weeks to ensure that we received everything we wanted and expected. It’s the perfect size and sturdiness. He even added sealant and a step up to the deck. Can’t wait to have him back for more projects. Renato is a must for your woodworking and construction needs.

I love what Patricia did with my backyard! I rent a duplex and have a shared backyard. It was extremely overgrown and had random potted plants everywhere. Patricia did a great job cleaning up the backyard and utilizing the plants that we already had. She has great vision when it comes to cleaning up a place and making it comfortable to entertain. I am very happy with the backyard and have already used it this weekend to have some people over. Highly recommend Dirt Beauty!

What started as a small project to replace a side yard with gravel turned into a full backyard renovation. We had a patchy back lawn & overgrown rose & agapanthus plants. We had everything ripped out, reconditioned, leveled and had Thomas' team lay new sod & gravel. They were unbelievably professional, nice, timely and hard working. Thomas was hands-on directing the crew & had great suggestions when asked. The entire project took 5.5 working days to complete and we're thrilled with our new lower maintenance & zen-like backyard! I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again 👍🏼

From the get-go, Keli was professional with his communication and preparedness. Getting an estimate was simple and fully detailed. Kelly worked well with my wife designing a vision for our small backyard and it turned out better than we imagined! He was able to answer all our questions throughout the process and kept us well-informed. The work was high quality and turned out beautifully!

Working with David has been a dream! First of all, he is very detail oriented and great at communication. What I love most is that when there is a question or he has an idea or wants to give me an update, he texts me and responds instantly. He was also able to do an additional project for me at at an amazing price and the work is outstanding. he is very knowledgeable about everything in my garden, able to follow complex instruction that my former landscaper gave us when we remodeled our backyard, and he has brought life to my beautiful outdoor living space. I would highly recommend David.

Turfusion transformed my entire backyard into a beautiful zero-scape flowering oasis. They designed and implemented the whole project. They were very professional, Leo and his team performed quality work and they were on time and in budget. I called them for a minor adjustment to the drip system and they took care of it the next day.

Super fast reply. To speed up the process (I wanted to take of my palm tree asap) I provided to them a picture and based on that they gave me an estimate. They were able to accomodate my schedule by coming the following date in the morning. Prior our appointment, they sent me a written estimate, which I agreed. Came on time, did their job (trimming a palm tree located in my front yard) and cleaned up after that. They were polite and courteous. I will hired them gain. Thank you so much guys!!!

We want to thank you and your landscaping crew for an exceptional job on our very distressed backyard. You should get an award for this project. We are very satisfied with the results. Our tenants and neighbors are amazed at the transformation. The work was done in a timely manner. And, you successfully worked with our budget! You are a highly knowledgeable guy that does not cut corners. We highly recommend Cutting Edge for any project and will use Ryan and his crew again and have already referred them to friends and neighbors. Chuck & Kimi, City of Orange, CA

Jamie was wonderful to work with and incredibly professional. The convenience of scheduling and handling of payments was great, and the value of the service is terrific. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is the gardeners forgot to service the backyard during their initial visit. It was simple enough to let Jamie know, though, and they came out the next day to handle it. I would highly recommend this company to others.

I've always wanted to grow my own organic food but didn't know how or what to do. Then I met Rick and Adam of Organic Harvest Gardens. They came over to the house for a consultation and shared their vision of how, in just a little space, I could grow my own food. With their help and professional know-how, I've converted part of the backyard into this incredible, beautiful garden! Now, I'm going out to my backyard to pick delicious, fresh organic produce each day rather than drive to Whole Foods or some other market. I couldn't be happier or healthier! Rick and Adam are great guys to work with, really know their stuff, and have a passion not just for what they do, but for making people healthier and life more sustainable. Thanks, guys. You are the best!!!! Rev. Ron Gothberg Long Beach, CA

We recently moved to OC and had to find a lawn care service for our new house. We are so impressed by Lawn Love. We found Lawn Love and their team did a wonderful job making our backyard into a beautiful and inviting space. Customer service is what Lawn Love does best. They answered our email and phone requests, even though we had to reschedule numerous times. Then once the job was completed, they followed-up to make sure that it was done to our satisfaction. I recommend Lawn Love to all of my neighbors and anyone who is looking for professional lawn services!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
