Introduction: I have been teaching drum set lessons for 18 years and love it. I have had students go on to prestigious music schools, as well as be lifelong hobbyists. I teach all styles and specialize in jazz. I love to empower students of all ages, even as young as 3, learn to internalize how to grow while having fun with their instruments. I have had students stick with me for more than 12 years regardless of where I have moved (I am available for Skype lessons and they work just as well.). I'm always willing to work something out financially, so I use a sliding-scale method of payment where appropriate.

Drum Lessons

I have been taking lessons over FaceTime with Alex for the past few months. At first, I was worried that FaceTime lessons would be ineffective — but I am SO glad that I gave it a shot! My growth has been exponential since working with him! Alex’s teaching style is unique, engaging, and exciting. Instead of growing bored, I’ve fallen in love with developing a foundation that will aid me in becoming the badass drummer I aim to be. Alex has done a great job understanding and sharing my vision for where I’d like to take my drumming and showing me what the work to do that looks like — all while having FUN! We have even been able to work on hand technique from afar — the distance really has not become a barrier to my progress thus far. If you’re considering working with Alex, I highly recommend you give it a go! You won’t be disappointed!

Drum Lessons

Fabulous first couple of lessons. Having so much fun learning drums. I really like Alex's teaching style. He explains and demonstrates really well and doesn't let me get away with bad technique. Alex is giving me plenty of things to practice without overwhelming me. Highly recommended!!

Drum Lessons (for adults)

Alex is amazing. I'm new to playing drums (but not to playing music). From the first lesson, Alex gave me exercises that were not only fun to practise, but also musically interesting. He teaches by introducing a student to great beats, not by getting bogged down in theory and technique. That said, my technique is definitely improving ( and Alex himself is a technically impeccable drummer) coming as a byproduct of working on enjoyable exercises (its not unusual for me to end up practising for two hours). In short, Alex knows how to drive home core musical foundations while keeping it fun. Alex is also a fun, friendly and personable teacher. I'll admit that he was not the least expensive quote I received on Thumbtack, but something about his methods and personality told me to give him a shot. I'm so glad I did!

Drum Lessons

Alex is an excellent teacher. He's patient and his lessons are designed specifically to fit you! He can see your potential. In his class he not only teaches you the techniques, but also the way to think and feel. And you get a lot of encouragement too! Every time after class, I feel energetic. As a beginner, Alex quite understand my needs, and it has only been one month yet I felt I've improved much further then I expected. He made me confident that I can be good at drumming! Looking forward to next class!

Drum Lessons

I have never had music instrument training before and I decided to try something new. I was hoping drumming may be the slight chance that I could be and remain creative, before the routine life consumes me. I found Alex here and started to take drum class via Skype. It's over a year now, I still haven't met him in-person. My friends who had piano or violin training since they were little thought this was just a phase and I would give up soon. It's highly likely to be the case without Alex. I did a lot of Youtube and Drumeo for 2 months, it didn't get me anywhere. I suppose it could be helpful for those who have a decent fundamental training already, but not for me. Alex has been doing this long enough that with a glance from video chat, he knows exactly what my problems are and he has his methodology to fix it a small yet solid piece each time, so that it is fun and it keeps improving. It is just amazing. I was surprised someone so professionally trained like him would take me in and literally start from scratch. He told me he has students of a wide range of age and levels, from kids going professional to adults like me. He just shares the passion. I have a full-time job and need to be flexible sometimes, he has more and more gigs, but we always figure it out with little effort. Looking back and see myself starting at rock drumming and recently getting into Jazz drumming, from barely hold the sticks to where I am right now, I'm so lucky that I have this mentor, who is positive, encouraging, patient, resourceful, and versatile. Drumming is a massive universe, I'm just getting to know it, but I'm not scared, I'm looking forward to the unknown. Cheers.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I do have a sliding scale but my general rate is $60/hour. However, If I come to you then I need to charge for gas as well as travel time. For example, when I teach a student in Burbank they pay $100 for a 60min lesson (sometimes we go longer). This is because it takes me about 25min each way to travel and there is a gas cost as well.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I try to assess exactly what level a student is at. Then I proceed to try and find any "holes" in their knowledge. Then I devise an organized approach to build the holes into strengths while turning the strengths into GREAT strengths:) I also need to know both how much the student is willing to practice and what styles they are truly interested in. Beyond that, I spend a great deal of lesson time trying to coach the student and reveal to them what excellent practicing ACTUALLY looks like. This process really helps people develop great practice habits.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Outside of receiving my Master's in Jazz Performance at The California Institute of the Arts, I have studied with some of the greatest teachers in the world. This includes John Riley, Eric Harland, Bill Stewart, Bob Gullotti, Joe LaBarbera, Damion Reid, Gregory Hutchinson and more. I have a very earnest desire to understand the best way to teach concepts that a lot of teachers insists "can't be taught". I disagree and have created systems to codify aspects of drumming language to simplify this process so the student can truly learn to internalize vocabulary to express his or herself.
