I miss identified my floor as Tile when in fact it was travertine with an epoxy grout. Not to mention my condo is on the second floor. They let me know it was the travertine, hand washed it, and resealed the grout. I even got a free overcoat polish which prevents stains. They were upfront about some changes in the cost but they were very reasonable and it was my fault for misidentifying the travertine. I am very pleased with the service and would recommend them again.

Adam retiled my large master bathroom shower (25 square feet) in less than 7 hours. He was very helpful in selecting a new drain and provided advice on how to seal a few cracks in the wall with out my asking. When he figured out that we weren't going to have to do much tile cutting he even recommend we use fast drying thin set so he could grout the same day and save me some money. I was impressed.

Very small tile repair job but Michael did it anyway. Spend over 2 hours and made the repair look great! Not perfect but how do you match dirty grout, right? I will use Michael for my next complete re-tile. Great Job Michael!

Project details: Kitchen backsplash using a marble mosaic with a herringbone pattern. Many people (including me before commencing this project) are under the assumption that installing kitchen backsplash is a breeze. I soon realized that installing backsplash can be a very tedious job which sometimes requires someone with a lot of patience and attention to detail, all of which Robin has! At my first meeting with Robin, I was instantly at ease. He is very easy to talk to and was very helpful in suggesting different options in terms of materials to be used. However, we did run into a few hiccups. After inspecting my walls, he soon realized that we could not install the backsplash onto a painted surface. I was very worried that this would bring the cost of the project up, but Robin was able to find a solution very quickly and all to stay within my budget. Other issues arose, however, Robin was always able to quickly resolve them without tearing into my wallet. In addition, Robin was very respectful and mindful of the cleanliness of our home by ensuring that no dust from sanding our walls would escape the confines of his work space (he put up a really cool barrier!). Robin is an honest and hard-working individual who will never compromise the quality of his work and will never cut corners. Robin takes his time to ensure a finished product that is not only done properly, but done to perfection. Robin takes a lot of pride in his work, he is highly professional and an amazing person to work with. To be honest, he's just an amazing person (and funny too!) I will definitely hire Robin again for any future projects. Thank you so much Robin! You couldn't have made me and my family any happier with our new kitchen backsplash!

Sos installed our kitchen backsplash, about 40 square feet or so. They were subway tile, and we wanted it with the smallest grout line possible. He did a perfect job. We made a mistake and didn't order enough tile, and Sos was great about coming back on another day after we got more tile. I would definitely hire him again. In fact, I have a fireplace that I'll be updating, and I'm calling Sos when I'm ready for the work to be done.

First time working with Cal Engeneers, I specifically worked with Khalil, and Lazar, they did an incredible job. We had a one bedroom unit that has not been renovate din over 8 years, they came in, and had the whole place redone in about 11 days. Whole new laminate flooring put in, carpets removed, walls painted, popcorn Celing removed, and many cabinets and closets repainted. Essentially remodeled the entire 1 bedroom apartment. They came in under budget for what I expected and did a lot more than asked. Such as refinish the bathtub and clear out grout. very fast work, always on time, easy to reach and very fair prices. and an over all excellent experience. Just handed them another job in another property.

This business is owned and operated by three brothers who are all very professional and concerned with what is needed. We moved in a house that had the blackest grout I have ever seen and they removed it all, making the tile look brand new! They also deep cleaned the tile removing the previous owner's pet smells. I highly recommend them for any of your tile cleaning needs!

She has done a good job repairing grout, caulking, and locating drain issues that cause tile discoloration. She can do spot repairs and larger projects. She presents the different courses of action and lets you decide which is best for you.

David was very nice and did a good job. There are a few spots that I think needed a bit more scrubbing. But grout is a tough one, when it's wet it's darker so it can be difficult to see those areas. Plus I can't ask him to stay all day while it dries. Haha!. I would use them again for sure.

I highly recommend BNA Stone! Our beautiful tumbled marble shower, marble vanity counter and marble floor had lost their luster after 20 years. The BNA team cleaned the surfaces, repaired the grout, fixed some staining from cleaning solution mishaps and then sealed it all. It looks like we just installed it! Pricing was very fair and the technicians knew exactly what they were doing. The sales person was professional, courteous and kept his word. They have earned our trust. We are very happy with our bathroom and Stone Makeover!

We had leak from the walk-in/Jacuzzi tub against tiled walls in our recently remodeled master bathroom. Three different tile or shower/tub contractors with their solutions were unable to fix it. The same holds for our vanity’s splash back board that cracked during installation none of the marble/stone professionals that came to look at it could fix it without taking it apart to their shop. Ernesto Ortiz suggested epoxy grout for the tub/wall and special glue for the marble both for very, very fair price. He was very skillful, professional, clean work site before and after and great personality. The results were incredible on the splash board you can not see the huge crack that was there at all. The epoxy grouting looks great and the joint no longer leaks.

There were some hiccups at the beginning, so the project took longer to finish. However, Robert did a good job on our guest room's laminate flooring. He is friendly, too. I will hire him again if I have a project near Downey.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to clean tile and grout?

The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Pros may charge a flat fee or by the square foot. Rates can vary depending on the type of tile and grout you have (more delicate tiles may mean specialized products or careful handwashing), how dirty your tile and grout are, and what part of the country you are in (regional labor rates and costs to do business affect costs). For example, one floor cleaning company charges 75 cents per square foot for tile and grout cleaning for projects that permit cleaning by machine. Another company may charge $30-$50 per hour for hand-cleaning of tiles. Companies often charge a minimum fee for services to ensure their business expenses are met when they accept a job, no matter how small. In addition, a tile and flooring cleaning professional may charge added fees, such as $25 or more, to move heavy furniture or appliances.

How do professionals clean tile and grout?

If you need tile and grout cleaning and don’t have the time or mobility for scrubbing your entire house on your hands and knees, it’s time to turn to the pros. Tile and grout cleaning professionals have industrial-grade machines designed for the sole task of cleaning the porous materials of grout and tile. Typically, a cleaning pro will come out to assess the job and provide you with a quote. Often they charge per square foot (for example, 75 cents per square foot), with higher prices or an hourly rate for areas that will need hand cleaning. The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Once onsite, the pros thoroughly clean the area by wiping or sweeping down and then vacuuming up any dry dirt. Next a chemical tile cleaner is sprayed over the surface, causing dirt to loosen and adhere to the spray; the industry term for this is “suspension.” The pros then clean the floor with professional-strength machines, which often use a combination of steam, brushes and vacuum to loosen, agitate and lift entrenched dirt. Your floor is then rinsed, removing all the spray. Usually a small room can be cleaned in under an hour. Applying a sealant afterward is recommend and will also affect cost.
