About
Compared to other teachers, I take a systematic approach so that students are progressing in whatever they're practicing. For example, if you're taking trumpet lessons and want to build range, we'll incorporate a combination of breathing, range, and lip flexibility exercises so that your range sounds great in any register. And if you're a composer and want to master writing for orchestra, we'll start with studying key orchestral scores and orchestrate music written for piano. As a teacher. I like seeing students develop to the point where they can make their own, informed decisions. This means knowing how to practice, how to compose, and how to analyze music.

I recommend him without any reservation. I chose him because he was the only person who established qualifications to teach what I wanted to learn, which was counterpoint (music theory). He takes his teaching responsibility very seriously, preparing a lesson plan and conducing extensive research to find good teaching materials each time, which makes his teaching very effective. He is also very attentive, responding to my e-mail inquiries immediately. He also understands that I need to learn theory in order to enhance my musicality and tailors the lesson in this direction, instead of going over theories in a dry intellectual manner. So, I can tell that you will learn how to make music, not just following notes if you take instrumental lessons with him, too.

Judging from my son's experience, t would be hard to get a better trumpet teacher than Jon. He's diligent, intelligent, and loves to teach. He's also a very good guy.

Jon is simply the best! Kind. Patient. Professional. My 10 year old daughter has been loving her lessons and has learned a lot in a short time. Jon takes his craft and his teaching very seriously and this has been very inspiring. I highly recommend Jon to anyone looking to learn trumpet!

Outstanding teacher! I received a composition lesson from Jon and the whole experience was pleasant, professional, and valuable! He was prepared with notes, a good lesson plan, and other resources. The studio in which the lesson was took place was clean and comfortable, and the equipment was up-to-date and accessible. Jon's teaching style was top-notch: although he is a very accomplished composer, Jon was able to meet me at my level on every piece of music we worked on. He understood how to really make of music--of each genre--connect with the listener, and was able to articulate these sometimes complex concepts (how music works) to me in a way that made me feel inspired and motivated to keep improving! Definitely worth the money! I can't think of anything I'd want to improve.

FAQs

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

In May, I was a guest artist at Universal Studios Hollywood where I got to play and conduct a jazz band piece I wrote for a high school.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

If you're considering multiple teachers, I recommend scheduling a lesson without committing to regular lessons to get a sense of the teacher's style, personality and expertise. After one lesson, you should have a good sense if you want to continue taking lessons with that teacher. I'm happy to do a one-time lesson so you can see what it would be like.
