Introduction: I have been playing music and composing my whole life. When I was 6, I began studying piano, developing a love of jazz, pop and R&B as I grew older. At Berkeley High School, I played in the world renowned jazz ensemble under Sarah Cline, traveling to Cuba in 2016. I also studied with Susan Muscarella, the founder of the California Jazz Conservatory, for several years. After high school, I enrolled in Pomona College, graduating in June of 2021 with a degree in Romance Languages. My goals as a musician and teacher have been deeply informed by my studies, particularly in regard to histories of cultural exchange in the Americas. In addition to my study of piano, songwriting, composition, and music production have been important parts of my life. During my final year of high school, I founded Molly with Charles, a songwriting collaboration with a friend that has now grown into seven piece live band. I also work to produce music for many artists, especially in the R&B and soul genres. Throughout my life, music has been an essential anchor for me. It has been the catalyst for much individual growth, whether through the process of articulating emotions in a song or the lessons of sacrifice and commitment imparted through dedicating oneself to a craft. It has introduced me to so many people outside of my milieu. And it has offered me a way of understanding our world. The cultural heritage of American music, founded and developed by African-Americans, is profound, and conveys as much truth about our history as any textbook. I have extensive experience working with kids as a music teacher, coach, and elementary school substitute at Prospect Sierra. I bring empathy, a sense of humor, and patience to each encounter. I know that each students needs are different, and I'm committed to tailoring my teaching to meet students where they are while pushing them forward. Above all, I hope to transmit the joy and richness of this art form for students to carry with them throughout their life.

Jackson is a kind, engaging, and thoughtful instructor. I’d highly recommend him to anyone with even the slightest interest in piano or music production. I really value how he caters to my particular needs and interests as a student. Each lesson leaves me feeling energized and ready to keep moving forward so I can continue to learn more.

I reached out to a lot of the other teachers on the site as I had some specific needs as a music student. I interviewed several teachers & had several lessons with other teachers & Jackson by far blew them all away. He is very knowledgeable but he also does a great job of getting those oh so important music theory basics to stick without silly acronyms or any of those cheesy book methods from when I was a kid. We are almost a month in & ive already made strides & grasped concepts in music that I never was able to in school or with traditional lessons. The best part is that he also writes music & produces and his music is really really good, leaps & bounds better than any of the teachers in here so he’s able to give you a great idea of how to be a great songwriter & make great songs. I was nervous bc he didn’t have a lot of ratings but he’s been way better than the guys I’ve seen on here with a lot of ratings & as we go into month two I feel like I finally found a teacher that makes me want to stick with it & make time to learn. Strongly recommend

Jackson and I have worked together for 6 years, and he is truly one of the best people and best musicians I know. His ear is like no other, and as a pianist, songwriter and producer, he is one of the best. When teaching, he is thorough, patient and passionate. His technical knowledge is immense and he always leaves space for creativity. I highly recommend working with Jackson!

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jackson for the last 5 years and he is an amazing musician and person to work with. He takes the time to explain concepts well along with being one of the most talented instrumentalist/writer/producer that I’ve worked with. If he touches your project i promise he will add amazing ideas to it. I trust and recommend Jackson!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge $50 per hour long lesson, and $25 per half hour.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to find out what music inspires my student most, and then use that as a jumping off point for harmonic and rhythmic concepts.
