I had a disaster with my refinishing, it was done so badly I could hardly breathe. Enter Joel Martinez. I contacted him in absolute desperation with just one week before I am due to move into my house. He worked around my schedule and got the job done in 3 days. What impresses me about Joel is that he listened to what I wanted and delivered exactly that. I am quite observant when it comes to work and they sanded 3 times, replaced damaged wood, sealed, fine sanded again, applied a thin coat of finish, I think there was some buffing involved too and another coat. He spend an hour with me on the freshly sanded floor comparing stains and finishes. In the end I decided on a non gloss natural finish. He would have stayed longer just to make sure I was happy. It's a family firm of hardworking men with exceptional craftsmanship. My floors look like they jumped out of a magazine page. So, will I have them back? You bet! Any flooring job he will be my go to. And best of all the job actually worked out cheaper than our budget and his initial quote. If you want an honest and hardworking crew who are going to give you the best materials, stains and finishes then look no further. These guys are great!

Mike was very professional and prompt from the get go when we were searching for someone to refinish our hardwood floors. He came out on a Sunday for an estimate and was able to finish the entire job by the end of the week! Also, there was minor damage to our wall due to the refinishing. After notifying Mike, he personally came to patch up the damage. You can expect A+ work along with great customer service from Mike. He is highly recommended!

Kevin did an amazing job refinishing my floors. I have 2 different types of wood installed, and both had been badly damaged over the years from water and heavy foot traffic. After Kevin was finished, not only did they look brand new, but the whole color/feeling of the room was brought back to life.

I connected with Mike while thinking about refinishing a credenza that had been in my wife's family for years. It had seen better days... Mike was very informative, accommodating, and responsive which lead me to go with him. In the end, we could not be happier with the final product. I would highly recommend his services. In fact we have several other projects we will be working with Mike on.

I was referred to RGB Construction via Thumbtack and met with GM Baltazar Ortega. He was very personable, knowledgeable and very honest. I hired his company to do a refinish on my existing wood floors and add some new floor where there was none. They did every room in my house with the exception of the kitchen and bathroom. It looks fabulous! His crew did a fantastic job, they did everything I asked of them and I couldn't be happier. I love my beautiful new floor. It feels like a new house. I would highly recommend this company if you are considering having any work done. I was also comforted that they were such honest guys at my home, that I didn't have to worry about any of my personal belongings turning up missing. He has an honest crew. Love them. Can't say enough. TIP: Hire them, you'll be completely satisfied and more.

John is my go to handy man! He does exceptional work and his attention to detail is impeccable. John has done many projects for me around the house. The first time I hired him was to construct pens for my pets. I drew him a sketch of what I envisioned and he built them for me and completed the project in a few days. We settled on a budget and he purchased all the materials and got to work right away. He was such a pleasure to work with and did such a great job I hired him back to help me redo my guest bathroom. He patched up all the holes in the walls from the previous owners, retextured the walls for painting, installed new baseboards and redid the sealing around the sink and toilet. He also sanded down my living room table and stained the wood. He did a beautiful job. My next project is to refurnish the kitchen cabinets, replace the countertops and put in support for a farmhouse sink. I wouldn’t trust anyone else over John, he’s very talented in many different areas. He’s got the touch and does at great job on every single project!

I am extremely pleased with BC&D's services! I hired Armand to refinish 100 years old hardwood floor and paint every wall and ceeling in my home. He is a true professional and did an amazing job with both the paint and the floors. He went above and beyond with professionalism and a smile. He completed the job in time (which is extremely rare for contractors and most vendors I've dealt with)! And offered the most competitive rate. I highly recommend him and his work.

We hired Mitch to resurface our cabinets. When we bought our condo, the previous owner did a horrible job slapping an ugly orange/red coat of stain all over the place. Mitch came in and stripped the ugliness from the existing cabinets, and added a nice coat of paint with a color of our choosing. He also fixed the baseboards that were cracked and replaced the ones that were missing. The quality of work was outstanding, I couldn't have asked for a better job in comparison to the price. Mitch even refinished the over hood range, so it wouldn't be such an eye-sore with the new cabinet look and also added the new hardware we had purchased. Overall, I highly recommend Mitch for your next refinishing job.

Magical Flooring sanded, refinished, and stained my floors in my dining room, living room, two bedrooms and the hallway. They also removed the base boards and put new ones. They showed up on time and were complete professionals. Carlos, the father, is an artist when it comes to reparing floor. If you decide to hire them make sure you let them know what you need done. Oh and working with Carlos, the son, was also a pleasure. The crew was very friendly and completely focused.

We removed a wall and needed to rebuild the solid oak floor where it had been. Matt took a look at the floor and matched it immediately even though it had been a pre-finish installed by the previous owner years prior. He was very pleasant and completed the whole job in a few hours and no refinishing was necessary. Very reasonable rate and now we have some wood left over if we need patches in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
