Introduction: My teaching principles are based on outlining the advantageous mental and physical practice techniques revealed through research in Sports Psychology. These methods help my students strategically overcome the numerous psychological obstacles in order to develop a consistently high level of performance. High-level performance under pressure is the common goal among many students, and I apply my teaching methods to develop and increase control of muscular and mental functions, accuracy, precision, discipline, mental awareness and overall coordination in violin performance. I share with students my Sports Psychology research that focuses on common triggers for performance anxiety, stage fright and other psychological barriers that negatively impact high-pressured performances. By assessing the students’ performances, I design an applicable daily practice plan which gears to establish better control over the physical and psychological symptoms known to negatively impact performance. By incorporating knowledge of Sports Psychology in my lessons, I hope to educate about the existing relationship between mental process and physical execution and the impact one has on the other, while maintaining integrity of the repertoire. For professional athletes and musicians, performing under pressure is an inescapable element of their careers. Given the current levels of performance excellence and the consequent fierceness of competition, consistency in performance quality is indispensable in attaining the degree of professionalism. This implied link between musical and athletic disciplines is a logical one. Similarly to athletes, musicians must achieve high levels of technical skill, efficient movement patterns, acute focus, composure and extreme concentration, all while maintaining a consistently high level of performance. Musicians ‘play’ music as athletes ‘play’ sports. Therefore, like sports, a musical performance is a physical activity with extreme demands on technical facility, training ethics, discipline, deliberate practice, structure, dedication, determination, motivation and inspiration. Like sports, it is a form of self-expression, performed in front of an audience and demanding astounding mastery of the human mind and body. Both performance practices provide the performer with opportunities for excellence, though the journey may bring forth intense pressures, challenges, anxieties, fears and psychological phobias. Adapting the methods and principles developed by research in sports psychology, affords tremendous advantage in a musician’s constant desire to elevate, not only the quality, but also the consistency of quality in their performance. The success of this approach is evident in my students’ positive attitude towards practice, their audition success in winning positions, acceptance into festivals, music programs and performance achievements.

My son took four times of 1-hr online private lessons with Dimitry. I contacted Dimitry through Thumbtack and he responded promptly and kindly offered a chat over the phone with me to get familiar with my son’s previous learning experience and areas needed improvement. During the lessons, he’s always on time, very professional and has high standards of techniques, which is really helpful in terms of beginners forming good postures. He also took time to communicate with parents about his ideas and philosophy of helping the student with tailored methods. Because we need to have a teacher who would be local to us for future in person lessons and recitals, we discontinued the online lessons with Dimitry. Because we have limited experience with violin teachers (Dimitry and my son’s first violin teacher), I have little idea of a 5-star violin teacher. Overall, I think Dimitry is a great teacher when the student responses well to his teaching style.

Details: 6 - 9 years old • 0 - 2 yrs of formal training • No, the student cannot read music • What the teacher recommends • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has a violin • 30 minutes • My home, venue, etc.

Working with Dimitry as a first time violin player has truly been successful. He not only is extremely talented but is very patient. I have learned so much in such a short little time and will continue lessons as long as I can.

If you are looking for a great violin teacher then Dimitry is the one. My 6 yr old daughter has been taking lessons with Dimitry for the past 4 months and he is incredible. Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is doing , was able to transfer his love for violin to my daughter who now is able to read notes , enjoys playing and looks forward for her lesson. Dimitry really cares about his students and their progress. We are so grateful that we found him and couldn't recommend him enough

Dimitry is absolutely a great teacher. I began classes very scared because I’ve never even touched a violin in my life but he has a lot of patience, and he explains everything so good that I stopped being afraid; he creates a very relaxed environment for you to feel confident and secure. He’s always on time for classes and he’s super professional. He’s also flexible schedule wise, so he will always find time to fit you for lessons. Learning a new instrument is always a challenge and you want to have the best teacher to guide you through the process and Dimitry is the absolute best. I’m very happy with my lessons.
