Give this family a challenge and you will not be disappointed. I met Ruth and Heinz when they came and gave me an estimate to remove the popcorn ceiling and the rug flooring from my family room. The room needed a full over haul. I am so pleased with the finished room. Could not have asked for nicer work. Heinz is a master painter. Just what I asked for. You can find a handy man to do this but you will get what you pay for. Heinz and his lovely wife Ruth have worked hard to fulfill my vision for this space. Thank you Schlemann family for treating me as a part of your family during you time in my home. Look forward to a few more projects in the near future.

I had messaged Casey and Patricia for several small projects. In addition to those projects, I ended up having them fix a mess that another handyman had left me with. They quickly completed that project, in a only a few hours where the other handyman had been working on it for 2 weeks and was still nowhere done! They even got other projects done for me and will be doing even more next week! They are both very understanding, mindful, and accommodating. They went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the work and did not charge me for a few small things they did for me! I can trust them being in my home and can even run errands while they are working inside my home. I am so glad I found them! They are both wonderful and a make a great team together!

My cabrio washer was not spinning, turns out it needed a cleaning and a new belt. This was discovered by Rob after giving attention to detail on the diagnosis. He offered what it might be setting proper expectations, but did not jump to any conclusion, took the time to diagnosis my washer, saving me money and time without my washer. He built the trust and confidence you need when hiring a handyman, felt like I hired a friend I trusted. I will use this service again. Excellent Service!!!

I own a home in Merced, CA, it is a rental property for me. I have annual inspections by Section 8 and I had a repair list. Jacob took care of all repairs efficiently without no hassle, even made the appointment with the tenant. All repairs were taken care of in 1 day, and I passed the inspection. Job well done.

Ken and Brandon did an excellent job on my fence repair project. Ken gave me a GREAT price and followed through with great service. They even did me a favor and showed up on a Saturday when the forecast was to be 106 degrees. They completed the job in a few short hours and I was very pleased with the job as was my neighbor. I would highly recommend "Fix-AllHandyman" for any and all of your repair needs. Thanks again, Ken and Brandon!!!

Raymond was very very helpful and flexible with his schedule. I initially hired him to assemble multiple beds and a shelf after a cross country move. But he happily stayed extra time to help me hang pictures and out up curtain rods and do a number of other small things. The time for this was not accounted for in the original work order. Even though the original quote was only for four hours he worked for an additional 3 hours with no notice until he completed everything I had requested him to do. One could not ask for better customer service.

Economical rates and attention to detail in a timeley manner

About

Hello, I am 26 years old, and I am a seasonal firefighter on the side. I do all kinds of different work. I farm obviously. I know construction, and I have built two custom homes with just me and my father. I have done landscaping jobs like installing sprinklers, building fences, cutting almond wood for the winter and stacking it at customers' houses. I also do pressure washing houses and concrete and interior housecleaning which my sister helps me with. She is very good at this, and so am I. I have attention to details in every job that I do, and I give 110%. I can do just about anything and everything. I can drive a tractor, weld, and install any type of household appliance or farm equipment. Just ask me, and I probably do it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
