Jay Y. says, "Adrian and his team did an amazing job on our fence. We first engaged him to do 130 lineal feet of shared fence on one side of our lot. He did such a great job and we were so impressed with the quality of his work that we ended up engaging him to do the other 3 sides for a total of 360 lineal feet of fencing (the other side, the back, and the front which included two pedestrian gates and one driveway gate). I appreciated Adrian's responsiveness (he readily picked up every time I called or texted) and his patience (I had to work with 3 sets of neighbors since we worked on sides that were shared with different neighbors - one neighbor was extremely difficult to work with so it helped that Adrian was so accommodating). Moreover I could tell that Adrian took pride in his work, staying late even after dark to hose down the fence after the wood had been laying in wet dirt after the rain. His team worked quickly, usually finishing one side of the property in a day, and they showed up on-time when they said they would. I also want to praise him for his counsel - each side had it's own issues and I relied on his expertise on how to protect me as a homeowner. On one side where the neighbor's land was higher than mine, he suggested a reinforced retaining wall that could bear the weight for my protection. His price was very reasonable, and I learned that his team used to work for McKenna Landscaping before McKenna retired (you can find accolades and reviews for them), so you're getting that quality and experience (which I can't afford) at a much more reasonable price. We went with the board-on-board style for more privacy and 4x6 pressure treated posts. The posts go down 2 feet and all the fencing feel very strong and stable. After the rain storms from last winter caused our existing fence to topple, I wanted something very sturdy. Although my neighbor wanted to cut costs here and there, even asking if we can get a cheaper price to only go 1.5 feet down, Adrian was firm and adamant, refusing to do anything less since he wanted his work to stand the test of time. Thank you Adrian, Victor, and Jose for the great work! If we need other landscaping services in the future we will definitely reach out again!"See more

Igor P. says, "I found Gerardo through thumbtack. He was quick to respond and offered to come evaluate my backyard the following day. I wanted to have my old grass taken out since it looked horrible and have new grass inserted along with some general clean up/trim of my fruit trees. Gerardo quoted me a very fair value. We agreed to a day for the service and his crew came as scheduled. The landscaping took up a good part of the day. Everything was done with professionalism. The new grass looks amazing and the surrounding area is clean and perfectly trimmed. Overall, I am very happy with the service and will definitely be hiring them again for more of my landscaping needs."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
