Emily L. says, "Alikssa and her team are incredible. We hired her to do a full outdoor remodel, including new native landscaping in the front yard and a pergola and outdoor kitchen in the back. She impressed us from the initial walk-through, asking thoughtful questions and letting us know how the permit process would work. Her bid was competitive with the other 2 we received and the most thoroughly presented. Once we began our project, she handled everything seamlessly, and it was such a positive and stress-free experience. She managed the permits, engineer review, and inspections and always kept us informed about what was happening and what to expect. Her team was there on time every day and they worked efficiently and stayed on schedule. The only delays were related to material availability and inspections. I truly appreciated her communication and transparency, and it felt like our project was a top priority for her. She also finished the project on budget, with the only additional expenses for things we added to the original project, like extra lighting. There were several uncommon plants I wanted for the front yard, and she scoured local nurseries to find them for me, and had helpful feedback and suggestions for alternatives to the ones that weren't locally available. I felt that she knew her stuff and she was always receptive to my questions and concerns and willing to explain anything I was curious about. She gave honest responses and could tell us the pros and cons of either choice when we needed to make a decision. She did a good job choosing healthy plants at the nursery and picked out especially pretty trees. She also replaced our slippery, ugly stamped concrete driveway and porch with pavers, and they did beautiful work on them. We get frequent compliments on the front yard from people walking by, and I love going out my front door or driving up to my house now! We wanted a real all-season outdoor living space, so our backyard installation was complex. Our pergola has seating, heaters, a fan, and an entertainment system. She managed the complicated logistics of doing every step in the right order masterfully, and the electrician was even able to add functionality to the sound system after installation. After the structure was completed, I wanted to add some sun shades. She did research and found a well-reviewed motorized blinds supplier. When I decided on non-motorized ones and had questions about those types, she was able to show me some images of a previous project that had used the brand I was considering, and was so helpful in figuring out the installation logistics needed to order the correct size and configuration. She made sure we understood how to use the apps and remotes for the various systems, like irrigation and lighting, as well. We are loving our outdoor space, even in the cold weather, and I am so happy that it is everything I had wanted and more. You can trust Alikssa and her team to make your dreams come true, and to do it with dedication, integrity, and friendly, professional communication."See more

Vera S. says, "Esteban and his team fully landscaped our back and front yards, including pulling up a lot of old vines and dead matter, layout out a new lawn, building large planter boxes, setting up new irrigation, planting new plants, lighting, and hardscaping. He helped source the best plants and grass for the best price and quality, and even went so far as to go with me to the garden store to drive the plants I had selected back in his truck. His team worked hard and did a beautiful job quickly and efficiently. His pricing is very reasonable - I would be surprised to find the same quality for the price anywhere else. I have since recommended him and his team to friends needing landscaping, and everyone has been happy with the results. His team also performs maintenance when needed and is always accommodating of special requests. I highly recommend!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need to rototill before laying sod?

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Who can lay sod near me?

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

When should you lay sod?

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

Can you lay sod over existing grass?

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

How much does it cost to sod your yard?

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
