I happened to find The Eye Lash Make up Artist because I had a huge stack of brochures (bridal expos and shows) and just went through it. I forgot to book a stylist, so I was cutting it close. Luckily, there was an opening for my wedding date. The main reason I went with them is because they've done plenty of people of different races who have looked great. (I'd rather not be one of the first few Asian test runs) A good majority of stylists did not have pictures of people of color and if they did, their makeup was not particularly impressive. I really appreciated Mayra patience in dealing with me because I had issues to deal with and didn't respond quickly and had a really wish washy bridal party that didn't know if they wanted hair or make up or both or none. Mayra did cost adjustments almost to the day of my wedding and I had to ask Heather about adding on an additional 2 services on the day of. If I had to deal with some one like myself, I'd be a bit annoyed. I had Heather for hair and make up and she was fabulous! We were not particularly helpful on what we wanted, i.e. clueless, but she gave us ideas, tried a few things, and it worked out wonderfully. Even though we tacked on 2 more services at the last minute (thanks Heather!), she still finished everything on schedule. We even ended up ahead of schedule at one point and took a break for a bit. Everyone loved their hair and make up and all of us received compliments. I had a trial done and it was great, but the day of looked even better. The wedding day was a bit windy and the groom kept bumping my hair and smudging my makeup, but my hair and makeup still stayed perfect until the end of the night. Even the fresh flowers that were in my hair. Pictures came out with us looking great! We all enjoyed Heather's company, especially the hair and makeup tips. :) I'd definitely recommend them to anyone looking for hair and makeup.

Rose is the best! She's an amazing professional, with unmatched quality of service and efficiency! She made me look 30 years younger on my wedding day (yup, that's what everyone told me). I couldn't have had a better hair stylist and make up artist! She's truly heaven-sent. I highly recommend her, and I'm blessed to have her get me ready for my Big Day! What an absolute treat!!!!

I arranged makeup / hair session with Anne for my in-laws for my wedding day. Anne kindly found a hair stylist for them as well. They were on time to meet them, and my in laws were very happy with them. Nonetheless to say, they showed up to my wedding, confident and comfortable. We are thankful for Anne's accommodating attitude and team work.

Liv is the best stylist a bride could hope for! My stylist cancelled the week before my wedding and Liv stepped in to save the day. I was running late and in a rush for hair+make up but Liv was ready to go with her suitcase full of tricks! We were instant besties and we had a great time laughing and chatting while she transformed me into a beautiful bride. My family even said I looked like a model. She's a true pro!

I hired for hair during my wedding & my bridesmaids were very satisfied with the way their hair turned out. I was so happy that the stylist arrived on time & they were ready to work. They were very sweet. The only issue was that after they were finished they asked for a 15% gratuity per person after I had already signed a contract stating that the service was paid in full & that the company was to distribute money to the stylists. According to the contract everything was included AND it stated in the contract that I was not to give the stylist money. It was awkward to have the stylist upset with me & demanding money. I asked her to call her company b/c I had already paid in full according to the contract for their gas, time, & styling. It was resolved but it was awkward! I'm still very happy with the final product :)

After my latest hair transformation with having fall colors and all the colors faded away, it was time for a change. I told Yvonne that I wanted blue, but instead, why not Stitch themed hair? This is by far, my FAVORITE hair color that I have ever had yet. I wasn't expecting much since Stitch was mostly blue with black facial features and pink ears, so I couldn't imagine what she could do with these colors besides dyed my whole head blue and put pink highlights, but NO! She added dimension to my hair and added the pink highlights to make it look like Stitch's ears was on the sides of my head. I was AMAZED by how she pictured Stitch's colors and transferred it to my head, BUT we weren't finished yet. It was time for the haircut. I am always pleased with whatever haircut Yvonne gave me along with any other hairstylists gave me, but I always requested my bangs to not be cut short. I had short blunt bangs before when I was younger, but was never a fan of it because I didn't like the feeling of my hair touching my face. Somehow, Yvonne cut my hair so that it was short enough to my liking and so that I could still split it down the middle or side part to my pleasure. Thank you Yvonne for this amazing hair transformation.

What can I say about Susan? Only that she is the best I have come across for hair extensions! I've been going to her for years now. She is professional and meticulous at her craft. My hair is growing now and not damaged anymore like it used to be from going to other stylists.

Amy is absolutely incredible!! Not only is her work amazing, she makes you feel so comfortable and really cares about her clients. She is very flexible and easy to work with. Living in Denver, I only had a short amount of time that I would be in California for the wedding, and she worked with my schedule to make sure I got a trial before the day of my wedding. On the day of the wedding, she was on time and she made sure she had plenty of time to get everyone's makeup done so we were ready on time! On top of that, she was very reasonably priced and worked within my budget. She also found me a hair stylist that fit in my budget as well! All of my bridesmaids, my mom, and myself loved our makeup and it lasted all night. Her makeup is beautiful and I got so many compliments on it. I would definitely recommend hiring Amy as she is definitely one of the best makeup artists I have ever hired!

I honestly can't say enough about Sunny. I hired Sunny to do my bridal makeup, along with the makeup for all of my bridesmaids, my mom, and my two mother-in-laws. From the moment I met her for my makeup consultation, I knew she was going to be an absolutely perfect addition to my wedding day. My makeup consultation was very helpful and fun, and Sunny even showed me a few fun makeup tips for my bachelorette party :) I also had Sunny put long-lasting false eyelashes on me about a week before my wedding. It was a long process, but Sunny was so patient and made sure that everything was absolutely perfect. It was SO worth it - the eyelashes stayed on for weeks and looked amazing! On the day of my wedding, Sunny brought a wonderful sense of calm and joy to the bridal suite. Sunny was very open-minded and patient with everyone in the party and made everyone look fabulous, and I could not have been happier with my makeup. It lasted all day and held up to heat, sweat, and (lots of) tears! After my wedding, I started going to Sunny to get my hair done, which is another one of her amazing talents. Overall, Sunny is amazing and I recommend her to anyone I know who is getting married / just needs an amazing makeup or hair stylist!

I cannot recommend Josanna more highly! She not only did such a beautiful job with my makeup, but she acted as my beauty coordinator for the day, hooking me up with my hair stylist and another makeup artist at the last minute for my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. She was so sweet and supportive and was such a calming presence the morning of. I do not normally wear makeup so I was really nervous about how it would turn out and she did an INCREDIBLE job! She really listened to what I was looking for and made me look beautiful without looking too overdone. And the makeup lasted the whole day, even after many tears, sweat, and tequila shots! I could not be happier that I booked Josanna and will certainly recommend her to all of my friends!

Letty does a great job with my hair. She listens to what I want and what I don’t want. She also gives her honest opinion regarding the color/style and what would be best for my hair. I don’t mind driving an hour to get my hair done by Letty.

LOVED working with Team Bridal Beauty! Christine was very responsive from my initial inquiry and throughout the whole process. I booked her for my bridal party for my wedding. We had Christine for our hair and Aline for our makeup. My girls looked beautiful and their hair/makeup looked perfect all day. I would highly recommend Team Bridal Beauty for any event that you want to look your best, especially your wedding day.

Working with Nicole was a dream. I would highly recommend her as a personal stylist and plan to work with her again soon. // A bit of backstory: I'm a 5'7" slender (size 2) woman in San Francisco in her late 20s. And shopping stresses me out - too many choices, not enough guidance, and I don't want to spend the time reading through Cosmopolitan, Elle etc to figure out what style works and what doesn't. Because of the above, I've worked with a personal stylist before when I lived in New York. I walked away with many nice and expensive 'classic' pieces from Bloomingdale's, none of which really fit my style and none of which I wear today. I look at that experience as a waste. I felt very nervous trying this again, but knew I needed to give it a go. My goal was to finally nail a capsule wardrobe so that I wouldn't have to think about each individual piece anymore -- without spending hours of my life on research -- so that I could just feel comfortable and confident in my look. // Working with Nicole Nicole is very down-to-earth and very approachable. In our first phone call, she asked about my goals, my body type, my favorite stores and more. She then put together a Pinterest board and sent it over to me. And here is the PERFECT example of why I'm SO glad I worked with a personal stylist in the first place... Because I looked at the Pinterest board and thought, "Oh, how dull... these pieces are so basic and too loose to accentuate my figure." But then my boyfriend (a visual designer) took a look and said, "Actually, the length of this top would accentuate your torso," and "The cropped length of these pants would make you look taller," and "The draped look makes you appear slimmer than a tight one" and so on and so forth, enlightening me to all the fundamental principles of style that Nicole had subtly understood and applied to fit my body, that I never would have picked out for myself. With that I was sold. // Once in the Mall I love the styles in Aritzia, but the last time I went to their two story store I spent three hours but walked out empty-handed and deeply frustrated. Nothing I had picked out actually worked on my body, and I felt at once helpless and somewhat pathetic at spending all that time, trying on all those pieces, and not being able to land at something that worked for my look. With Nicole, I tried Aritzia again. She had pulled out several pieces all waiting for me when I walked in -- and they all fit like a glove and were exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, casual, yet polished and with a touch of class. I was so excited at finally having found the pieces that could be a base for my wardrobe that I insisted on going through the store again together, in case we had missed something that might work just as well; and found nothing. She had picked out exactly what worked for my body type, exactly what worked for my style, and I wish I had trusted her eye and thoroughness from the beginning! // In Sum If you're looking to nail your wardrobe once and for all, and not have to spend hours stressing about it, buying pieces that you ultimately return, and just love what you wear without thinking about it, then work with Nicole. Just do it. You won't regret it and you'll have hours of your life back and compliments (and confidence) galore. Thank you, Nicole, and look forward to working together again soon.

I've leaned on Melissa more than a few times for wardrobe and styling advice; what I got, in addition, was a refreshing bit of life advice. Important mid-life reminders -- true beauty involves making time for yourself; finding a tribe that lets you be you; and challenging negative beliefs that hold you back from the life you're here on earth to lead. She is part stylist, part therapist, part best friend. Hire her; you'll be blessed.

The team in my office purchased a gift certificate for our lovely boss, and after speaking to a few different stylists, we chose Frances. She was a complete hit, honest, thoughtful, has a great sense of style- you want to be Frances' friend and have coffee with her everyday. She started with a closet cleaning, and an evaluation of her wardrobe- and then headed out shopping. My boss LOVED the expereince and will continue working with Frances, and has already referred her to friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
