I was absolutely delighted and happy about Happy paws services and training. Raquel is a true professional when it comes to dogs. I had "an emergency" travel overseas for three weeks. She took absolute great care of my puppy and training. I was amazed at Raquel's clarity in explaining how to work with my puppy and showing me what my puppy needs when it comes to obedience, being safe and happy. I received videos and chat updates regularly So I could see my puppy and know she is well taken care of. My puppy was very happy at her place, was treated as a family member, loved & very well taken care of. I couldn't have been gone as long as I was if it wasn't for Raquel's willingness to take care of my puppy and she made sure I had peace of mind while I was gone. Thank you. Brilliant work.

John has been such a help in teaching about potty-training my puppy, and now we are working on the fun stuff. I want my dog to grow up being well-trained so that others may enjoy him as much as I do! John is providing that path and I am so glad I found such a knowledgeable trainer!

Our trainer Denise has been such a great help with our crazy puppy. We hired her when the pup was 5 months old . We were in desperate need of training . Our pup was pottying in the house even though we had designated a spot for her to go. It was exhausting cleaning up after her all day. With Denise's help and expertise , our pup has learned were to go potty and we have learned as well the importance of consistency . It is evident that Denise is gifted as a dog trainer and our experience with her has been very professional . It is obvious she loves animals and there is a gentle way to train. Thanks Denise With love from Summer and the Courtney family:)

The business owner, Paula is a gem in a basically unregulated industry. She is a true dog whisperer and my labernese puppy, Drogo absolutely loves her. Paula practices only positive reinforcement; she is intuitive, gentle, kind and patient with both Drogo and me. She is a wealth of knowledge on dog behavior and on how to bring out the best in your dog. Paula is always eager to answer my many questions. I found Paula a couple of months ago when Drogo was 5 months old and out of control. I was in over my head and the last thing I wanted was an out of control large breed dog! Enter Paula... now he is calm and eager to please the majority of the time. The bond Paula is helping us to develop is very strong and I am confident that with her continued coaching, it will grow even stronger. I'm so happy to have found her!

We have an 8 month old lab that we were having trouble with her jumping on people and nipping all the time. After the first day of training we saw a great improvement. She also walks very nicely on a leash now and doesn't tug anymore. I would highly recommend Ruff Pup Dog Training!

Steve Welch of K9 Dog Training came to visit us and spent a great deal of time detailing his program and how it works. Steve and his associate, Wendy, were friendly, kind and considerate. As a result we let Babe, are Boston Terrier, and deeply loved little girl go with them to Training. We know she is happy and safe and in caring hands. I feel certain she'll return with some good lessons learned.

I cannot recommend Philip and Michelle Kaough of K.O. Dog Training highly enough. They have been with us since we brought our Golden Retriever puppy home, and have been invaluable in helping us to train him. Philip and Michelle are extremely knowledgeable, easy to work with, and have helped us at every step of the way in training our puppy using positive reinforcement. “Patient and Constructive” is one piece of training advice that Phillip imparted to me as critical in training your dog. Those words always ring true. Philip and Michelle are patient and constructive with dogs and owners alike.

Tommy was my first experience of having a trainer and I couldn’t be happier that I found him. He taught me more in an hr than I ever imagined. He helped me tremendously with the problems I was having with my Doberman puppy. Tommy shows a great amount of confidence and is very in tuned with working with dogs. He is the real deal. Don’t look any further and call him up and he will be sure to exceed your expectations just like I did. Enjoy and Goodluck

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

We love Maureen! She is patient and answers any questions I have during the week! She makes a personalized training schedule based on your families needs. I love that she shows my kids how to work with our puppy as well! We are learning how to raise a well behaved puppy with Maureen's help! We are already getting compliments on how well our puppy listens to us! The difference between our untrained dog and our new puppy is night and day.

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

Bo went in pulling on the leash and crazy excited when he saw another dog. One hour later he walked out calmly and was completely unphased by other dogs he saw. I've got to keep it up, but Paul got me and Bo back on track!

Brian trained my dog Bella. I hired him for 3 training sessions and the amount he taught her in just three sessions was awesome. Probably more important than training her, he trained me how to work with her and re-enforce what he taught her. Bella really seemed to like Brian (possibly partly because he always has treats with him!) and she really positively responded to his instruction. He does seem to have an immediate connection to dogs. The training was very interactive and he made sure to address any problems I was having with Bella and offered very practical solutions. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking for someone to train your dog.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
