K. Samuel L. says, "I am a 65-year old man, licensed psychologist, relatively healthy. I had worked with a number of PT's in the past but had not been able to continue over a long haul. Desperately recognizing strength training, I did internet search and found Ryan, who have received "Excellent" feedback from his clients. One of the most attractive things about Ryan was that he comes to my Pasadena house for training. Initially, we agreed to 3x's per week training for 3 months. Ryan helped me identify the equipments that I may consider purchasing, and I ended up setting up a small area for training (see the photo) in my house. Ryan is flexible in setting up the schedule and, if he is going to run late even for 5-minutes, he would inform me; when I need to change the appointment, Ryan accommodates without complaining. I know, in the past, some PT's were not as flexible and charged fees if I was not able to cancel or change the appointment time within a certain time frame. The value of personal PT is that I am motivated to push my limits. I learned from Ryan that strength training requires reaching the muscles' failure points. I also learned that 1 hour (50 minutes) weight training significantly improves my cardio-vascular conditioning. In the beginning, I was able to do 2 push ups. After 3-months training, to my surprise, I was able to do more than 20 push ups! After 3 months, we cut down the training to 2x's per week. I had never felt "healthy" and "strong" in my life. In September, unfortunately, I injured my groin from playing golf. The injury limited my training to only upper-body exercise. I know it would have been easy to give up working with Ryan in September, but I am glad I did not quit. Now, I meet with Ryan for upper-body work out. I am looking forward to recovery so that I can go back to core and lower-body work out. I am impressed by Ryan for his professionalism, expertise and outgoing personality. He is worth for every dollar I pay. Physical "work out" is a "work" but once I reach my initial goals the work out becomes much more pleasurable and improves not only the physical conditioning but also my mental and spiritual well-being. I highly recommend Ryan without no reservation!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a health coach?

A health coach is a service provider you can hire to help you realize your wellness goals. You can hire a health and wellness coach to guide you through life changes, keep you focused on weight loss or fitness goals, help boost your mental health, and more. Many health coaches work with their clients for set periods of time as the client moves toward a measurable goal. Wellness coaches come from varying backgrounds, and may have different areas of focus depending on their education and training. Research potential coaches by reading their reviews, researching their academic and personal backgrounds, and learning about any certifications they have earned from coaching institutes. Often, health and wellness coaches sell coaching packages ranging from three to six months or longer, depending on the client’s needs. The average national cost for an individual health coach session ranges from $60 to $90, although prices may range as low as $30 or up to $130 or more, depending on your location and the coach.

What is a holistic wellness coach?

When you want to reach new heights with your health and wellness, consider hiring a holistic wellness coach. Much like a health coach, a holistic wellness coach is focused on your well-being and meets with you in one-on-one sessions to help you identify and reach your targeted goals. A holistic wellness coach will typically have you take all components of your life into account when working to achieve your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, a holistic wellness coach will not only offer recommendations for your diet and exercise, but also discuss your emotional health, your work/life balance, your spiritual side, and each area of your life that affects your ability to follow a nutrition and fitness plan.

Although they are highly motivational and often can help clients achieve great results, holistic wellness coaches are not professional health care providers or registered dietitians. Different institutes and training centers provide certifications for holistic wellness coaching, so be sure to research your coach and read their reviews to understand more about their techniques and training.
