For almost 2 years, our lab mix rescue dog - Bailey - has challenged us on walks. I couldn't walk her - she pulled intensely on a leash & was distracted by anything she heard or anything that moved. ADD with physical reaction. If we came upon another dog on a leash, Bailey was aggressive and hard to control. My husband's back suffered from walking her, & he said I absolutely could not control her. Raquel's reviews prompted me to hire her. Within minutes of entering our home, she was in control. I was amazed at my dog's reaction to her direction. Bailey challenged her every step of the way - leaving the house, out the door, on the walk, encountering other dogs being walked. We observed how she handled Bailey, and learned so much. Our dog was heeling at her side! No pulling. Bailey kept challenging her, but Raquel kept correcting. Our first dog encounter was rough. But the 2nd one was so much better. Basically, Bailey was responding to who was boss. We have a lot of work to do. Raquel said Bailey would challenge us every day. It's up to us to continue using the tools she taught us. It will be a commitment. But now we know what to do. Hire Raquel. She promotes a one-session training and it works. That's what also drew me to her. Everyone's schedule is busy, and I wanted to train my dog without scheduling several appointments. What I saw was what Bailey could do with the right trainer, yet, Raquel was training us all. I'm very jazzed, but also understand that this will be a "walk in progress". Thanks, Raquel! I'll let you know how we're doing!

Somehow reading a book with common-sense dog training tips did not give us confidence. Dee Cee shows you these methods & how they work--but it is up to you to do it over and over till you and your dog get it. Our dog did not have hard issues so were were looking for guidance more than a trainer that would come multiple times. Dee Cee showed us insider tips and all the details..demonstrating with our dog... to give us methods & confidence. She left 2 tools to use as we will continue to work with our dog. We wanted an hour private session in our home to target 3 simple issues and Dee Cee was just what we needed.

Denise was great with my German Shepard name Misty. When I started with her Misty was jumping and pulling me where I could not control her. After two months I was able to train with her in 4 Paws for Patriots. She is now a certified service dog. We would not have been able to complete that task without her training. Vance Myers

Duane is a superb dog whisperer!!! I have worked with other dog trainers before but I have never met someone like Duane. It seems he has an incredible sensibility and ability to read each dog and know how to communicate with them. I just got my Stella, 5 year old English Bulldog, returned home after 5 weeks of board and training by Duane. Stella was very aggressive with other dogs and small children. She had virtually no obedience training whatsoever and never socialized with other dogs. I always had to warn approaching strangers, especially if they had a dog, that Stella was "not so friendly". Then a 8 week old chocolate Lab puppy came into our life and turned our home life upside down. Stella was very jealous and aggressive towards the puppy. My poor puppy was scared to death and something had to be done. Duane took Stella and trained her in his home for four weeks and the fifth week, I sent Henry to Duane for a week to be with Stella so that they could get acquainted and may be bonded. Frankly, I wasn't too sure whether Stella could change. I had a back up plan for the puppy in case the board and training with Duane did not work out. I am so happy that Stella and Henry are back home and they get along so beautifully, thanks to Duane!! It is so wonderful to have two dogs in the house without any tension. Duane is very professional, honest and very easy to work with. He answered all my questions, my numerous phone calls were never ignored, and I felt at ease about the whole process. It is clear to me that Duane loves and cares deeply about the dogs he trains and dogs love him back. Duane followed up with the second visit to our home today, and both Stella and Henry were so happy to see him. Stella actually wanted to follow Duane out as if she wanted to go with him. I have never seen Stella act like this with anyone outside her own family. We are so pleased and happy that we found Duane and can not recommend him highly enough. He is the real Dog Whisperer! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Duane!!!

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

I wanted to let you know how valuable the beginners obedience training was for my Airedale, Toby, and me. Tobey is 15 months old and before I brought her to you, she was out of control. I’m not sure I was ready to admit that when we started but I soon realized it was true. After just one week the difference in her was remarkable. After six weeks, she was like a new dog. She can now be controlled and no longer has the bad habits I thought were just "being a puppy". I have learned what you already know, that it is easier to train Tobey than it is to train me! Thanks again for a wonderful experience and if you ever need a reference, please don’t hesitate to call me.

Angela is training my little 14 week old Havanese. Toy breeds are always a challenge and she's done a great job so far. She's patient, knowledgeable and works with me with home work assignments in order to build on the lessons my pooch and I are learning. I would recommend Angela to any new dog owner.

Love Ur K9 saved our relationship with our puppy. Our dog went through two trainers and destroyed an endless array of items in our house when we finally found Kevin and Love Ur K9. After training with Kevin, our dog is like a whole new pet - still playful and lovely, but obedient and a joy to have in the house.

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

Alison was always a pleasure to have come to the house. Our dog Sonny just loved Alison. She helped us to teach Sonny basic obedience and he learned quite fast. She accommodated our schedules and was very flexible. She came to our home to work with Sonny twice a week. for 10 weeks. By the second week Sonny could follow commands pretty well. She gave us good advice on what kind of leach would help us because he would pull while walking. From the beginning, we could see a difference in Sonny's behavior and how well he would listen. We are very happy with the training Alison provided to Sonny and the tips she would give us on how to get him to do the things we wanted him to do. We will be calling on Alison again in the near future to assist us with future training. It was a wonderful experience and we are very happy and satisfied with the training we all received. I met Ron at a park in Anaheim Hills with my 4 month Rottweiler puppy. At this point, Diesel and I have had 2 lessons with Ron. I see a huge improvement with Diesel. He listens, is attentive, loose leash walks with me instead of dragging me, sits, comes, finds and can be coaxed from being agitated to relaxed in a matter of minutes. I now feel comfortable taking him to a park setting with kids, bicycles, skateboards and other dogs without the feeling of having to constantly have a tight hold on him or worried he will take off running. I highly recommend Ron and Dogwood K9 Training to anyone with a new puppy or highly excitable dog. Well worth the money!!!

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
