For the past 20 years I have taken dozens of lessons from golf pros in an attempt to not only improve but enjoy the game more as well (I suppose they go hand in hand). Rarely did I take a second lesson from any one of them. They just weren't helpful. Then I saw a flyer about a golf clinic that Ric was doing near my home and I decided to give it one more try. EUREKA! Ric has a special gift for taking each person where are they skill-wise and incrementally improving their skills. By the end of the 6th lesson I gained confidence and competence. Whereas before I wouldn't play with others who I didn't know out of embarrassment, now I can play with other intermediate players. I'll never be on the pro tour because I don't have a lot of natural talent, but thanks to Ric I do enjoy the game and have the tips and tools I need to play. Without hesitation I recommend Ric, and so does everyone else I've met who have taken lessons from him. On top of being a top notch coach he's a genuinely nice human being.

Have taken golf lessons here at Arroyo Seco from Joe Cano for a couple of years. The place is easy going and feels very personal and private even though it is a public course. Joe is terrific. He is deeply knowledgeable and has an entertaining style in which he uses analogies to make his point about one's swing - this helps a lot in retaining specifics in such a technical sport. Joe incorporates technology by recording your swing using cool mobile apps on his iPad that really let you see the mechanics of what you're doing and the progress you're making. I love this place and there are other instructors who also appear to be doing a great job, but Joe is awesome!

Mr. Austin has been a very important milestone in my knowledge of the game. After only 3 lessons, I saw a 60% improvement in my abilities and an 80% improvement in my score. He has proven his years of expertise and the ability to impart that knowledge almost effortlessly. Very highly recommended.

I met Bob Cisco at a Golf Show about eight years ago. He was advocating his "Short Game Boot Camp" one day lesson program. I tried it and learned a lot about pitching, chipping and putting from off the green with an iron. At the time, I was taking regular lessons frpm a golf pro at Industry Hills Golf Course. My progress was slow at best. I then took some lessons from Golf Tech where I learned to visualize my swing, but did not see a substantial reduction in my score. Then a few years back, I contacted Bob Cisco to discuss a series of lessons both at the range and on the course. Since then, my golf pals have noticed a marked improvement in the smoothness of my swing and my ability to make much better ball contact. As a matter of fact, the best golf compliment that I ever received was from one of the golf pros at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club during a Demo Days. He remarked how smooth my swing was and asked who my pro was. I told him it was Bob Cisco who taught me this swing. Keep in mind, I am no youngster. I am 69 years old and have only been playing for 12 years. Bob transmits his golfing knowledge and swing thoughts in a very easy to understand manner. His catcher's mitt technique for bringing the club back in the backswing has been one of the major breakthroughs in my game improvement. He has a way of taking complex swing thoughts and simplifying them for easy execution. My scores hace been dropping and just recently scored a personal best of 85. Thank you Bob Cisco! S. Jack Nicklaus and I wrote back and forth to each other in 1979 regarding swing theory and technique. No small feat. I DO know the golf swing like few on earth do and am the proud owner of a world class swing, myself. Among top 200 amateurs in U.S. in 1978.

"Life is a lot like tennis; you need to put your goals on the sidelines and focus on how to deal with what's in hand." I can coach at all levels and ages. You just tell me how far you want to go, and I'll show you how to get to the stars.

In my 20 years of experience within the golf profession, I have discovered that we learn to play good golf when we uncover how our perception of our swing is to what is our actual motion. It becomes a process to improvement that gives the golfer great results.

I take a personal approach to teaching. I feel my success is best judged by my clients success. I apply the fundamentals to each person individually. You can't teach everyone the same and as a teacher you need to be able to apply the same fundamentals in a different way based on body type, strength, etc. I also believe that too many teachers forget that the difference between shooting in the mid 80's and the 70's is ability from 100 yds and in 90% of the time.

I love the game of golf and love teaching. What I do differently is that I teach the game backwards, from putting chipping, 1/2 swing, 3/4 swing, and full swing. This way, you will have the right swing path.

I am a graduate of the Golf Academy of America with a degree in Golf Instruction. I love introducing new players to golf and specialize in fixing "Baseball Swings" as I used to have one. I also focus on the scoring element of the game (100 yards and in)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
