Judy L. says, "I just finished a project with Feifei. I had started my project by interviewing 7 to 8 architects. Most of the architects provided basic 2D architectural plans and didn't match the modern and minimalist style that I was looking for. Feifei's pricing wasn't the highest or lowest but it's somewhere in the middle. What she provided overall was so much more: 1. Feifei was flexible and brainstormed with me on how we would divided up the projects into 3 phases so that we can get construction going ASAP. 2. Feifei was consistently responsive whenever I had any questions or requests. Our project took close to 10 months to get through 3 phases. She was extremely helpful throughout the entire time. 3. Feifei provided material advice including places to get good quality products for a great price. She also told me when a quote didn't make sense and provided other options which was extremely helpful. 4. Feifei's work is so much more than what other architects provide. She does 3D renderings of her design to give you a visual which is very helpful when you need to decide whether or not you like an element she included. 5. Feifei is so creative and really is a master in designing modern and contemporary homes. When we saw her website, I was wow'd by her designs, but I wasn't sure if she could pull off meeting all of our criteria. One of our major redesign was to take out the entrance of our house and make it grander, modern, let lights through but still provide us with privacy. It was a difficult combinations. When we saw Feifei's design we were completely wow'd by it. She was able to keep the design very affordable and was even able to recommend a good vendor to sell us the pivot door we wanted but had gotten quotes elsewhere that were way over our budget. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Feifei for her professionalism, dedication, and creative design! Note: to anyone who is considering doing home remodeling, I do recommend that you connect with the city where you need to pull permits yourself. This allows architects like Feifei to free up their time and do what they do best. Most cities also get back to homeowners much faster than architects. You can get the response you're looking for much faster!"See more

Truman C. says, "Maria was an amazing find as the architect for our 1k ft home expansion. She brought with her extensive design experience and knowledge of our local requirements. She went above and beyond in her role. We worked closely coming up with an appropriate design that suited my family taking all my inputs while providing me with different options and opening me up to new possibilities. She then worked closely with the City ensuring that we met all their strict requirements and during the construction closely collaborating with the Engineers and GCs as well a working with various groups to get certs and approvals done. With a large project such as mine that had many moving pieces and various challenges, having Maria from beginning to end kept the project on track everyone focused, and in the end brought our wonderful design to life. And now I have a beautiful home to show for it. Thank you Maria!"See more

Cynthia L. says, "A couple of years ago, I worked with a local architect on my room addition plans, and it was a nightmare - constant delays, excuses, and poor performance. The worst part was that I was charged way more than it should have cost, as I found out later. So, when my wife and I decided to go for an ADU, we were very hesitant to start and obviously decided to use another company. That’s when we came across the folks from QuickenPlans. From the get-go, I was pleased to learn that they work through escrow - meaning your money is safe in case of non-delivery. I really like this option and do believe more professional services should use it. The QuickenPlans team delivered as promised; the plans were good, and the 3D modeling is really handy to understand what the future structure will look like. We completed our plans in 4 months (most of it was on our side—we took our time to work on the details) and are already in construction now."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

In a house plan, you can expect to see an overview of the construction site, floor plans, roof plans, foundation plans, electrical plans, exterior elevation and more. Always ask your architect what they plan to include in your house plan.
