I have gone through many gardeners over the years and Jose is turning out to be one of the best. He does a beautiful job, does any extras I ask him to do, he will let me know if he can't show up - he has never missed a day so far. Very reliable and very easy to work with. I hope I never lose him.

Greg and his crew did a complete makeover on our yard and everything looks really beautiful and high end. Greg was patient with me and didn't rush me in making decisions after I had changed the layout a few times. Everyone at GM Landscaping was very professional, efficient, detail oriented (not missing even the tiniest of details), and helpful with offering suggestions to tweak the design to achieve our ultimate goal and happiness. I am a very picky customer and I can truly say that I would recommend GM Landscaping to anyone who is looking to get the best results on any of your landscaping and tree trimming projects.

Raygoza's did an excellent job and were priced right! I am very selective when I use contractors and expect good communication, professionalism and a good job! They fulfilled my expectations! As I told Carlos, their work affects our company reputation so I need the job to be done right! He and his crew did it right!

Matthew was very hardworking and easy to work with. We have .6 acres that had been neglected for over 5 months, so to say it was a big job would be an understatement! Our yard looks amazing! I would definitely recommend him (and already have) to anyone looking for a superb landscaper!

It was such a simple process. I put in my request and several different landscapers responded. I received immediate responses and within two days they were here to give me an estimate!!! I hired the first person that I spoke with because she seemed very professional and willing to do the work for a reasonable price. I'm excited to get control of my back yard again.

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

I had a very large tree in front of my first home I bought and I wanted it gone for our new landscaping plans. A few guys came by and checked it out and gave me a very expensive quote! Daniel removed our tree for a very reasonable price given the size and complexity of the roots. Everyone told me it would take 2weeks and Daniel did it in 1week! He was always respectful and Had great work ethic! I would highly recommend him!

Form and Focus completed a full landscaping job for us this past spring. Our backyard began with all dirt, and by the end, we had attractive hardscape, redwood fences, artificial turf, a raised cement deck with seat wall, landscape lighting, a gas firepit, drip sprinklers, and complementary planter beds to accent the perimeters. From the design phase through completion, Jacob and his team were very professional, and especially responsive to our design change requests throughout. We would highly recommend Form and Focus for any of your landscaping projects.

We had a blank canvas to work with and I desperately need someone to help me plan and plant these plants.. he called and showed up to my house as he promised. The price he quoted me was very reasonable and Francisco had such and eye for how to arrange the plants we bought he had so many ideas we were very pleased .. I Will definitely keep him in our contacts because we have other projects we want him to help us with..

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
