Valentin was the first to respond and scheduled a prompt appointment to come out and look at our broken sprinkler system. Two previous landscapers said it couldn't be fixed or would require tracking down an expensive part. At our estimate appointment, Valentin said he could fix it on the spot -- and he did, in just a few hours and for a rate that literally saved us thousands of dollars. We were so pleased with the work, price and his punctuality, that we are now hiring him to install some new sod and put footprints around our trees. I would recommend Valentin any day of the week.

Wow! Came home to find my project completed with more quality than I expected! Carlos and his father Carlos and their assistant installed the irrigation for my new vineyard with high quality subterranean adjustable drip systems that I’ve never seen before so it’s great to turn down during too much rain and turn up when there are droughts. Carlos and Carlos installed new sprayers for my 1000 bulbs and planted rosemary and Spanish lavender. They trimmed the palm trees and fertilized the palms so beautifully just like palms you see in Los Angeles! Wow and then I asked them if they could fix my Christmas lights and said they don’t have much experience but they would figure it out by tomrw!!! Honestly I’ve had nightmare landscapers in the past and have had nothing but wonderful interactions and performance out of these guys. My warmest wishes to these hard working men. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄!!!

Always nice when a contractor is punctual and does what he say's he'll do. If you need a landscaper, Jesus is the guy. He understands his best marketing practices, comes from referrals

We recently purchased a home and the previous owners had deferred maintenance on much of the landscaping. Miguel was very responsive. He and his sons did an outstanding job trimming trees and hedges, shaping bushes, and pulling weeds. We look forward to working with him again in the future.

I highly recommend Castro Landscape. I'm very pleased with the difficult hedging project they completed and appreciate their meticulous work. Miguel is professional and easy to work with and is able to schedule our yard work on a project by project basis that is convenient for us financially. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality work they do. We'll definitely be having them back for all of our gardening/landscaping needs.

Marin landscaping did an outstanding job at my house. He came and gave me a fair estimate. He completed the work while I was at work and when I got off and went home i was extremely impressed by the work he’s done. I will be using him again. He’s professional arrived on time for the estimate and left the area clean.

Rob did a wonderful job. I would definitely use him again. Both the front and back yards look amazing and we are totally satisfied. Here's the unique thing with Rob. He doesn't like to work with drawings or plans. So you either need to totally trust him or have enough knowledge about landscape design that you can have in depth conversations about your problem situations. For instance, even though we had just purchased the home, we could see we had drainage issues around the garage and needed to pay special attention in that area. We had actually previously paid a landscape architect to draw up plans, but we were not happy with how that relationship was developing. So, we paid her for her time and took the drawings such as they were. Rob barely glanced at them. At first this made use nervous. But, here's the thing...if you get too married to a drawing, it doesn't allow you to be fluid enough to adapt to the ever changing situations. Frankly, it worked out for the best. We ended up with a perfectly melded version of Rob's ideas blended with some of the best of our original ideas. Nevertheless, when developing the contract without drawings, you'll need to be a little more specific about things that would have otherwise been called out in the drawings, such as how many plants of what size, how many yards of mulch, how many tons of what kind of rock, etc. It's a leap a faith, but Rob wants to do quality work and make his customer happy, so it's a leap I'm happy we made. (I am incapable of taking decent photos, but Rob had professional photos taken. Please ask him to take a look. They really are beautiful.)

Pacific Garden Artistry is owned and run by Richard and working with him is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise difficult business to find true professionals in. His education, dedication to hard work and aesthetics, and professionalism is 2nd to none in the gardening and landscaping industry. You should be so lucky to be able and have him help you bring your overgrown, under utilized, unimaginative outdoor space into something beautiful. Do yourself a favor, hire PGA and Richard.

Ricardo and his team were busy with another job, but fit us in so our job could be completed on our timeline. The job was completed with some additions along the way as we both saw fit to both of our satisfactions. We now have a fabulous deer proof garden space with 2 gates! I recommend RR Landscaping and look forward to working with them in the future.

It was great working with Edward. The work he and his crew did exceeded expectations. The deck and turf installation were done very well. There were a couple delays, from suppliers, but Edward kept us informed and put in extra hours to get the job done. He offered great value and was easy to work with. We will definitely call Edward for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
