About
I teach more than technique. Although technique is an important aspect of making music, it is not music. I show my students not only how to play but also how to learn and how to listen. My goal is to create more music in the world and help people find their own voice in their own process.
While most of my professional experience is with the bass guitar and upright bass, I also play and teach guitar and love seeing people improve and deepen their love for and ability on any instrument. Playing bass and guitar is extremely rewarding in terms of fun and options for performing and I love sharing this opportunity with others.

Awesome lesson with Paul. He was patient with me and really established how he is going to teach and was open about his style and also working to get your own unique style and not just imitating him. Excited to be playing again and having Paul as a teacher to work with.

I work with Paul on a regular basis, hiring him as a bassist for live performances and studio recording. He is very skilled on his instrument, he is always willing to work on songs and is very quick to pick up new material. He brings a lot to projects by way of his knowledge of various rhythm options and is a very patient and knowledgeable teacher in this regard. His work add a lot to the music we perform together. He is very professional about the work he does too. His replies are always super prompt, which is much appreciated when it comes to organizing music related jobs.

Paul is my favorite bass player in the universe. The perfect balance of groove, chops and creativity. As a producer, the tracks he's done for me are stellar performances and he makes every project he participates in better with his attention to detail wether the music is ultra-complex or simple folk tune and everything in between. Can't go wrong with Sounder.

Paul Martin Sounder is one of the most chill and yet hardworking musicians I know. He is personable, kind and a totally fierce bassist. I absolutely love playing with him -- he is an incredible, surprising improviser and can also execute challenging, complex compositions with ease and precision. As a teacher he is patient and fun, but won't let you off easy. He combines technique and soul, diligence and heart -- I am lucky to have him as a teacher, collaborator and friend
