Ebony took the time to really get to know our story and preferences, and it showed — every ritual and reading in our ceremony was collaboratively created specifically for us. So many of our guests came up afterward saying how personal and intentional the whole ceremony felt, which is exactly what we hoped for. Couldn't have asked for a better fit to lead our wedding day.

Details: Wedding • Christian • 21 - 50 guests • Help writing vows will not be needed • English • Officiant will not be needed at the rehearsal

Hired on Thumbtack

We hired Ebony Johnson through Thumbtack several weeks before our wedding. My then-fiancé and I had a one-hour Zoom meeting with her, and afterward we both felt genuinely excited to have found someone so warm, kind, engaging, and professional to officiate our ceremony.
During that meeting, Ebony thoughtfully walked us through three African American wedding traditions that she often incorporates into ceremonies and asked whether we would like to include any of them. We chose two: “Jumping the Broom” and the “Tasting of the Four Elements.” We specifically declined the Libation Ceremony. We also shared that we are both Christians, so we left the meeting believing we had a clear, mutual understanding of the ceremony we had planned together.
Unfortunately, our experience on the
wedding day was very different from what we expected.
Ebony arrived late, and during the ceremony she unexpectedly announced—in front of us and our guests—that she had “accidentally deleted” the words she had written for our ceremony. This was news to both my husband and me, and we were completely caught off guard. It was an uncomfortable and frankly mortifying moment during what should have been one of the most meaningful parts of our wedding day.
She also performed the Libation Ceremony, despite our having specifically declined it during our planning meeting. More broadly, the ceremony took on a spiritual and “Black love” focus that we had not discussed or requested. As a mixed-race woman with a very diverse family, and with both of us having specifically shared our Christian faith with Ebony, this did not feel representative of us as a couple or of the ceremony we believed we had planned.
I want to be fair in saying that Ebony has a lovely presence. She is warm, has a beautiful smile, and her energy and delivery are engaging. Those qualities were exactly what drew us to her in the first place, and why we left our initial meeting feeling so confident about choosing her.
However, an
officiant is entrusted with an extraordinarily important and personal role on a wedding day. Couples should be able to trust that the ceremony they carefully discuss and agree upon will be honored, particularly when it comes to religious, spiritual, and cultural elements. Unfortunately, that was not our experience.
While we appreciated Ebony’s warmth and presence, we were deeply disappointed that the ceremony did not reflect what we had discussed and agreed upon beforehand. It is especially difficult knowing that this was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that cannot be redone.

Details: Wedding • Christian • 21 - 50 guests • Help writing vows will not be needed • English • Officiant will not be needed at the rehearsal

Intentional Celebrations (Wedding Officiant)'s reply
Hi Annabeth, I appreciate you taking time to detail your experience. I regret that you both were disappointed to say the least. I know how important a wedding day is and I do my best to offer the highest quality I can. Based on our discussions, I thought I had a clear understanding of what you wanted, but I was clearly mistaken. For all the misunderstandings about what you wanted and didn't want for the ceremony as well as my blunder of anxious transparency when I accidentally deleted your love story script (one that I carefully and lovingly crafted and have since recovered) as you walked down the aisle, I genuinely apologize and deeply regret any discomfort this has caused for you and your husband. I did not know that you both felt mortified when I integrated that reality into the moment as your guests chuckled and I received several compliments from them and even from each of you about how beautiful the ceremony was. That said, I can understand how complicated and nuanced this moment was for the two of you so I am appreciative that you are sharing your actual experience. There are definitely improvements on my part to take accountability for. I do want to clarify however, that I wasn't late. As a courtesy, I like to show up 15-30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony and I did offer to arrive 30 minutes early. I texted you that I may be 15 minutes later than that due to an unavoidable conflict, but I actually arrived only 6 minutes behind the time I originally shared-still well before the ceremony was scheduled to start. I should have messaged you when I arrived however, so that you knew, but I focused on setting up and assumed that the coordinator of the day could communicate that. I only clarify this because this is a public platform and I want to ensure the narrative is clear that I do arrive to weddings in a timely manner. All that said, I hope this isn't too deep of a stain on that day. You all are a beautiful couple, with a beautiful family, and had a beautiful wedding despite me. As I shared with you directly, if there is any way I can offer some repair, I am open to hearing what that may be. And my door remains open for a dialogue or even just to listen and hold space for your feelings of disappointment if you want. I am definitely learning from this experience lessons to take forward and wish you all the best on your journey moving forward.
