Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

They showed up on time and did a magnificent cleaning. They picked up things and didn’t just clean around things. Best house cleaning I have ever received!

We had Danielle clean our 4 BR 2 BA house today and there are surfaces that I didn’t know could be this shade of white! I had forgotten how clean a life before children was and Danielle helped me remember. The house is spotless and this service is a tremendous value!

Nidy was awesome. She took her time and pays attention to detail. The house when I got home looked and smelled great. Everything was polished and cleaned correctly. We have two St.. Bernard's that consistently shed all over the house. She did a really good job at cleaning all the hair around the house. I would recommend Nidy to friends and family, she is very reasonable in pricing, and her attention to detail.

They did a really good job, I was pleased with the outcome. It was my first time with a whole house cleaning and I was surprised with how much they did.

They came to my house for cleaning as thumbtack pros but clearly not a cleaning pro. At first glance the cleaning looked ok but later on I discovered that they had cleaned the stove, bathrooms and toilets with some kind of polishing paste but didn’t wipe it off. There was white dried residue on everything and my husband and I had to spend and hour cleaning it off of everything. We also found dust bunnies everywhere on the floors.

These guys were wonderful! We needed a move out clean for my brother and the house was pretty dirty including slobber from a bull dog on the walls! They did an amazing job and I will be hiring them to do my own house in the near future! Thank you Jose!

The cleaners were very nice. Unfortunately, this was supposed to be a deep clean for house showing and many things were missed, like cobwebs, baseboards, blinds, and dusting in places. Our laminate floors leave footprints. And something was used on our new faucet that discolored it. Disappointed.

Mindy worked very hard to clean my house. She got my shower much cleaner than I have ever been able to. I liked how she asked if I wanted to use my own cleaning products and was very friendly with my toddlers. We will have her back again.

If you are looking for a company to clean your house and I mean DEEP clean and do an exceptional job DO NOT hire these people. I called them to do a deep clean of my 2 bedrooms and bathrooms and they did not do anything I could have done myself. I don’t think they know what deep cleaning is. I am very disappointed. Some people in the reviews said they were not good but I still hired them and I don’t know why. If you need your house to be superficially cleaned and not deep cleaned with excellent job they hire them. I messaged them and told them to come and redo it, they ignored my messages. I will report my bank company that they are frauds. I wasted my 355$ dollars for nothing. Nothing was deep cleaned. Very very very bad company, at least they should have said they will come back and redo it or refund me back half of my money but they said nothing just read my messages. Very bad company listen to me and find another company. I will let me bank know this is fraud! I also think the reviews that says they do a good job is not real because this is the worst experience I’ve had with cleaning companies !

Please don’t trust these people think about it before you book her!! This company is terrible. I got my house cleaned only once and in that one visit her employee broke my sink drainer and then she questions me that if it was really my employee! Seriously!?! I have been getting my house cleaned for many years whether it’s this house ot other never haf issue. And it’s 5 months since this happened and I have been going back and forth. She doesn’t reply fast enough you have to keep reaching out and then on top of that she denies from her own words. Her last message to me was that please get it fixed and I will pay for it. It only charged me a small amount abd she is denying to pay me full amount. So my recommendation would be not a reliable company to trust. Anyone had questions feel free to reach me.

I am so incredibly pleased with the work the Rub and Shine crew. We are selling our house and needed a team to come in and detail the house for us in preparation for listing. I wish I had taken a before and after photo of some cabinets I had on the master bathroom. They looked pretty bad, even our realtor had recommended bringing in a guy to fix the cabinets. But after the Rub and Shine crew came and cleaned the cabinets, WOW, they were shiny and beautiful! You couldn’t even notice there were any issues with them. They have the magic touch. If you want a crew to come in and make your house spotless, please don’t hesitate to hire these guys. They worked non-stop for hours and left my house sparkling. On top of this, they are so reasonably priced. You really can’t go wrong! Thank you Rub and Shine Team!

I hired Tanya because she was highly reviewed and I’m glad I did! She was very patient with my scheduling conflicts and to accommodate my schedule she came out on a Sunday and spent the entire day and most of the night cleaning off the dirt the last renter had left. The work she did was amazing, the oven had caked grease and grime and now it looks brand new. She got the dust and grease off the ceiling fans and the windows, all the children fingerprints are finally gone. If you are reading this review and looking to clean your house. Do yourself a favor and contact Tanya, you won’t be disappointed.
