Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

I had a terrible experience with Eastbayb House Cleaning. She came to my brand new house (there was nothing in it yet so would assume that it would be relatively easy to clean). I was in my first trimester of pregnancy and was not feeling great so I didn’t check her work before paying her and her leaving. I paid her $200 plus another $20 tip for cleaning the whole house. After she left, I noticed that the floors were still extremely dirty and uncleaned, the windows were still very dusty and there were uncleared piles of dust and debris everywhere. Did she even clean anything? I texted her photos and told her that I was disappointed especially considering that I had just trusted her because I wasn’t feeling well. She offered to come back to clean my house again for free. Last week, I messaged her and asked her if she would come back to clean my house and I got no response. I didn’t want to leave this review but I feel like I have no choice after being scammed.

Agustina was amazing. She did such a thorough job on my house. Went the extra mile to be sure everything was taken care of. It was a huge job - the house had not been cleaned professionally in years. I was so fortunate as I reached out to her Thursday to see if she was available on Saturday. I highly recommend Agustina. Thank you!

We finally decided it was time to get some help around the house and could not be happier with our decision to hire Carmen. Carmen has been cleaning our house every two weeks and now I can't imagine our lives without her. She is very thorough and has some sort of magic with our glass shower that I didn't think possible. Would highly recommend!

I was told last minute that they couldn’t come to the appointment I scheduled far in advance. It was a move in clean and I took the entire day off of work, they were supposed to come in the morning. I spoke with Nina who was incredibly rude and argued with me so she could make it seem like it was my fault. Don’t work with this service, I wouldn’t want people like this in my house. Sketch.

If I could give her zero I would this person is wishy-washy I don’t know if she’s on some type of substance but she’s not stable she’s late from the very first meeting she sent someone else to clean my place and tried to say that she was there with her which wasn’t true because nothing we discussed was completed and I told her I did not want someone else in my house without me knowing before this ever even happened before her first initial cleaning . Empty the dishwasher just left a completely full amongst a list of other things that we went out with her after I told her I wanted my keys back she asked for another chance I guess I’m too particular for her but he had like a personal likes to do their job and she doesn’t seem to want to or maybe she dies or maybe she doesn’t because she asked for another chance and canceled on me today after all I did was try to get things ready for her to make sure she had enough detergent she wants to say I’m too particular. Everything from the start and told her yes I like my things a certain way she agreed my case in point is this don’t agree to do things and don’t ask for a second chance because you know you were wrong and then fake out this shows her personality do you want this type of person cleaning our place good luck.
