Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

David painted the entire home interior in 3000 sf house, including vaulted ceilings and difficult details in a single week! He also faux painted the existing contractor fireplaces in the master bedroom, formal dining room and living room, which completely their look, and the room. Based on his suggestion, we decided to have subtle stripes added to the paint job in the MBR, and it looks terrific. All of this for considerably less than any other quote we received. Cannot recommend Dave at Artistic Painting highly enough. OUTSTANDING!!!

Dave just completed painting my master bath room today. Since I provided the materials, he was able to give me strong advice on the paint to purchase. He finished the job in the time quoted and is very responsive to my emails and messages on his cell phone. Not only is his expertise in painting he is a jack of all trades, I'm planning to hire him to do some outdoor patio covering work. Highly recommend Dave.

He seemed to be a very nice man and then he kept changing the rules and asking for money up front. I offered to pay for the supplies and the paint. He said that's not going to work for him. He wanted the money up front by Thursday. Enitially he said that everything was included in the price. That's when he backed out. I was shocked because his professional demeanor changed once I said no money up front funds, because we have a verbal agreement and we have the funds to pay him once the job is done. He left his paint pallets at my home to choose the color of paint. The price was right and after reading his profile and reviewing his photos I was impressed. He changed his mind and we were trying to work things out. He backed out, so we had to go with his decisions. It's not the only Artistic painter a d I'm glad this is over. The drama was unnecessary after the facts. I have moved on.

After living with the work Jeff did for us about a week ago, I can truly say he did a great job. I had a very unusual request for him to paint an entire wall with a landscape that sort of fades away behind some sculptures hanging on the wall. He nailed it! His choice of color and tone were great and he found exactly the right amount of detail for this impressionistic landscape. We are looking to find more projects for him!

We initially had carpet all around the house and we switched it to vinyl flooring. We also had the house painted, the cabinets refaced and got rid of our popcorn ceiling. Our representative was Benjamin and we had an amazing experience with him. He took great care of us and he went the extra mile to make sure that we had everything we needed. He dealt with problems and always responded very quickly. We would definitely recommend working with Smart Homes Inc.

I hired Melissa and Don to remove popcorn texture then retexture the Celling and paint the entire house. Along with some other jobs such as replacing and hanging all of the interior doors. Sure a few things popped up that weren’t expected like my water heater had to be replaced, and we decided to replace all of the base boards. This Husband Wife team was able to roll with it and gave me fair prices for the additional work needed. Melissa is one of those people who will be there when you need her and Don works his schedule getting stuff done. The work is quality. Both of them complement each other. I highly recommend them for your home projects.
