Carl is an excellent tutor. We hired him for sat prep plus his ability to help our son catch up on his studies. He is very knowledgeable on what kids need help on and how to engage them. Our son loves working with him and wants to learn. We chose Carl because he has tremendous experience as an educator plus has an east coast background which was extremely important to us. He has proven to be a wise choice and we are so happy to be working with him. A month into this we are very happy. As parents, we have made the right decision. Carl is an excellent teacher. He is tough, challenging and inspiring. Even as two ivy-league graduates, we respect his advice on our son in regards to grammar and literature. Overall, we are extremely pleased with our decision.

Dan was a life-saver! My son was up against finals in Physics and Math, we found Dan and he was working with my son within 24 hours and explaining concepts that had never been effectively taught.. My son walked into his exams with more confidence and understanding and for that we are very grateful.

Chris is an awesome math and SAT tutor! He's been tutoring our teenage daughter for a year in math, and recently started prepping her for the SAT as well. He relates well to teens, and he's great at honing in on whatever she needs help with in math. If you want to make math homework stress-free for you and your student, it's well worth the money!

We’ve had a great experience with Club Z. I had two international students that were tutored thru them. One 14 year old that needed much help since English isn’t her primary language and an 18 year old preparing for SAT. I would definitely recommend them.

Cindy and everyone at Rainbow tutoring are some of the kindest individuals I have met. The wisdom Cindy bestowed on me while helping me through my college application process will be with my forever and I am so grateful. Cindy helped me figure out what I wanted in my college experience and gave me the tools to get myself there. She introduced schools that I wouldn't have seen myself at and helped me get myself to Santa Clara University. She is beyond inspirational and such an empowering woman that is a role model to any and all of her clients. Cindy and her team are smart, dedicated, and reliable- they are always able to help and are great mentors to have before going off out of high school and into a college or real life environment. Cindy especially is very clear and really walks you through the steps to understanding in both Math, Writing, and the SAT Prep. I am so thankful to have met and able to work with you guys !

We have used Kris for two of our children and she really helped them both incredibly with getting their math scores way up. We used another tutor initially to help our younger son with the Math 2 subject test and he did well but not perfect, after 2 hours with Kris he got a perfect score on the retake. She just had a way to show him how to take the test. Renee tutored our son for the English and Reading and Essay sections of the ACT and also for the SAT Reading and Essay. He ended up doing much better than we even expected with a perfect score in English on the ACT and a much higher score on the Reading section - she raised his score in reading by 3-4 points. We have recommended Kris to several friends and everyone loves her. Renee worked really well with our son. We highly recommend both Kris and Renee.

I wish I could give these guys 100 stars. Deb was extremely helpful. My son had a very low SAT score. Harry met with her a few hours every week.  His score jumped up. Arbor knew exactly what to do for his new SAT score and he got accepted to three Ivy League schools!!!. You can't ask for anything more. We are extremely happy with the results.

Hands in the air for the BEST LSAT TUTOR PERIOD. I was weary of spending more money but I heard she was especially gifted with teaching applied logic to people who "should" be scoring higher but aren't. After our 3 sessions, we changed my entire approach and I am officially +11 from last summer. I told her she should double her price, she changed the trajectory of my life --I'm going to Vandy! She can take the most complex abstract concepts and convey them in a way that suddenly *clicks* without any condescence or sublte remarks for having taken two paid-for prep classes already. She's a Polly-Anna for late-bloomers/mom's/40+ and everyone else going back to school and I highly recommend her.

        About

I've been tutoring for the GED. I've tutored English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I also teach English pronunciation and enunciation for non-native English speakers. I use several different learning techniques to cross train the brain hemispheres to comprehend and retain information and make learning more fun.

        About

My specialty with the pro-literacy programs, classrooms, group dynamics as well as tutoring and preparing learners for testing has been reading, math and art. I also specialize in utilizing creative learning and test-taking anxiety techniques with individuals who learn differently. I realize and recognize the challenges and struggles often experienced during the learning process; therefore, communication is vital! We will establish goals and by-when dates during the initial meeting. Reaching goals and learning how to exercise your potential is most important. Students who are committed to their stated goals will do well but will be challenged with homework assignments. Completion of challenging but not overwhelming homework is a key component to the learning process for the learner as well as for the teacher/tutor. I pride myself in providing reasonable accommodations as needed, maintaining a flexible schedule and being prompt. My expectations include reciprocal respect, open communication and sharing real concerns. I care enough to give constructive feedback and expect the same from each individual I work with. My cancellation policy is a 24-hour notice for both of us. We can always reschedule for another time when we both are available. Three consecutive absences will cause for an assessment, reevaluation and redetermination. Your success is what really matters. I will always check in with you to see how things are going and hope that you will share any concerns as well. I believe in a quiet learning environment, such as a library, for best results. Distractions such as phone calls can disrupt progress. I'm looking forward to partnering with you as we diligently work towards your desired goals.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

        • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
        • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
        • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
        • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
