These guys are the best! They are professional, artistic, reliable and fun! I loved the video and the still photos they delivered. They were easy to make arrangements with, showed up on time, and had my video and photos delivered to me electronically and by DVD via the mail. Working with Rand has been great! He really elevated the level of quality of our annual event video, from the video quality to the editing and final product. He was extremely easy and professional to work with in this whole process, which made my job easier particularly the day of the event. I would highly recommend Rand for your business video project.

I came to Sonia Alvarado with a challenging request: combine two different versions of a music video for a new song of mine into just one -- one that drew upon the best parts of each but could be integrated seamlessly into a coherent whole. Before I met her and worked together with her on this project there were a lot of things I didn't know about Sonia. I didn't know she'd won 3 Emmy awards while producing a weekly TV show here in LA. As is the case with anyone I've never dealt with before, I didn't really have any idea how easy she would be to work with, how collaborative-minded she might be, etc. As the project got underway, it didn't take me long to realize that I was very very lucky to have come across someone of her talent and caring personality! Sonia has been absolutely GREAT throughout -- down to earth, communicative, easy going... and I could not be any happier with the quality and feel of this final version of the video that she's made for me! I'd work with Sonia again in a heartbeat, and I highly recommend her to anyone in search of a highly skilled & experienced video editor and outstanding human being!

Next year I will mark my 60th year in public television. 32 years of it were spent at KQED-SAN FRANCISCO, one of the flagship stations of the PTV system. There I started in the late 1950’s as a Stage Manager-Floor Director and eventually became a Production Assistant, Producer-Director, and finally Executive Producer of Local and National Production, as well as EP of all On-Air promotion and fund-raising.I've produced THE THREE TENORS. LES MISERABLES IN CONCERT, FRANK SINATRA-THE VOICE, and concerts by PERRY COMO (an Irish Christmas), HARRY BELAFONTE, and CAROL KING!! For the last 19 years as an Indy, I have co-produced and directed biographical performance Specials on THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS, THE KINGSTON TRIO. and LIBERACE. One on the great Bandleader-composer GLENN MILLER is currently being developed. My task at hand last week was to produce/direct a 7-minute short documentary on my 91-year old sister Renee Cary, who passed away in July. So..the version had put together for me was used for a 10am run thru Friday morning. Luckily I received permission from the Coordinator of the Event the next day to send them a revised version to be downloaded later that day onto her laptop. So I googled SANTA BARBARA EDITORS and up came the word THUMBTACK. Those folks asked me the critical questions, whose answers would lead them to recommend someone who mainly could do the job THAT DAY Friday in order to download it that evening. AND that’s exactly what happened due to the EXTRAORDINARY skills and terrific personality of SHAUN KHAN of FD Productions!!!! When SHAUN CONTACTED me and I found out he was in LA, while I was in Santa Barbara — I thought “same old same old”. Well i couldn’t have been more wrong!!!! Shaun explained to me on the phone that we would do the edit session using SKYPE to link us together. So we did and I was able to see and hear on my IPAD EVERY edit that he did after we were able to discuss what it was to entail—down to the VERY IMPORTANT to me speed of the dissolves between the photos.

Commercial and Event Shoot - we hired Ron to do the event shoot for our new facility opening and do a few external images, he delivered 10 folds, he brought his drone and was able to fly it around our facility to capture stunning video and still images. We then hired Ron the second time around to take commercial photographs of our products and equipment and once again has delivered amazing results! I recommend Ron for any photography and videography needs!

I have worked with Joe on several projects. At the 2016 NAMM Show in Anaheim, he shot and edited more than 10 videos over a four day span and all were just excellent. High quality, with pristine sound, to boot. We also worked with Ducati for a Fender/Ducati partnership and took to the streets to make a creative promotional video that showcased a great scavenger hunt/post-party event. I'd definitely work with Joe again! - Mike Duffy Senior Editor Fender.com

Merve has been absolutely incredible to work with. Not only was she on time, professional, kind, and gracious during our entire actual filming process, she has done nothing short of incredible editing for our promo video. We are super picky, and were concerned about looking good on camera, but Merve knew exactly the lighting to use with us, and was super receptive to all of our requests. The video is amazing and we will absolutely be working with her for all of our videos moving forward. Totally exceeded all of my expectations.

My wife and I couldn't be happier with Vince and the video he made for us! Stop looking elsewhere. You found the right videographer, and person. Vince talked with us before the wedding and understood what we were looking for. The day of, Vince was perfect. It was like he was both familiar/family and also just a fly on the wall. He captured little details and big moments with ease, with no trouble to us or any guests. He was everywhere! We were impressed with how he found unique angles, always seemed to be in the right place, and yet never interrupted or required anything in particular of us. He's a pro! After the wedding, Vince communicated well with us, provided us the edited video within a reasonable timeframe, and provided the full HD download. We were over the moon when we watched the video. It captured not only the spirit of our wedding, but also our personalities, our guests, and even little observations throughout the day that added so much to the video's story line. We can't thank Vince enough for all he put into our wedding. Hiring him was the best choice we made.

I've had Howard transfer a bunch of VHS tapes to DVD for me, both while he was still in GA, and since his business moved to CA. His work is great, very professional, and great quality (considering the age of my tapes). Thanks Howard!

Greg Gast is without a doubt the finest editor I have ever worked with. He consistently delivers on time, on budget and on target. We all can tinker with an app or a laptop iMovie program, but what you can't get from those programs is out of the box creativity, sequencing and experience. Greg Gast's taste level and judgment is impeccable. If you want to impress and take whatever project you are working on to the next level, book Him now, if you can even get him! And, I don't write reviews.

Collaborating with Brad on my music video has been an absolute honor and privilege! He brings such passion to his work, not to mention so many technical and artistic skills to the project (as filmmaker, writer, editor, educator, storyteller...) that it's no surprise as I view the video we've made together that I'm jumping for JOY -- now, and undoubtedly for a good long time to come!

As a media professional firm, Ascend Media Productions highly recommends Since 1987 Films for wedding videography. Andrew and Anthony have top-notch skills as camera operators and video editors, but it's their passion and commitment to excellence that sets their work apart from the rest. A quick read of their reviews tells that story, and it's plain to see why so many brides and grooms consider this team to be a part of their family. Ascend Media Productions is proud to partner with Since 1987 Films for their drone imagery needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

    • Package 1: $1,400
      • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
      • Two cameras with audio equipment.
      • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
      • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
    • Package 2: $1,800
      • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
