Introduction: I have experience with public, private, and home school students and their families. I am patient and have a natural gift for inspiring students to reach beyond their own perceived weaknesses and strengths. I'm down to earth and my personal background makes me sensitive to the diverse challenges students face socially that many times are the major factors in their academic success. I love seeing students begin to realize that they are capable of academic success. When they start to believe that the negative words they have heard from their teachers and peers are not at all true and that they themselves have the power to be their best. I love the smile on parents' faces when they notice their child's improved self confidence and improved test scores. I absolutely love what I do.

I was one of Stephen students for an ACT prep class More MOSTE(College Prep Program) was offering. He is a great teacher, I learned all the stratgeies he taught and I knew how to apply them on my test. He helped me understand what challenges I was going to face in the ACT by providing me with several practice test, and then reviewing on what I did bad to work on my weaknesses. He broke every section down such as the reading, science, math, and english. He took each section and explain the stratgeies that would be used to break down the question and find the answer quickly. He always answered any question that did come up from my other classmates and myself. As a teen it was hard for me to wake up early to these weekend classes, but I can honestly say I really did anything to not miss his class. I really enjoyed his classes, and what I really like about Stephen was the confidence he gave the whole class. Without his help I feel I couldn't have gotten the score I did.

My ACT prep classes with Stephen were the best! I learned so much with you. I was talking two prep classes and your class was the only one that i actually learned something in. You really gave me the confidence on April 9th to take the test and give it all i could. Your class was never boring and thank you for everthing.

Stephen Johnson was my ACT tutor during the months of March and April of this year. He was really helpful and gave very good advice. After the practice tests, I would feel sad about my score but he was encouraging and very patience with me. He taught me many different skills that I applied during my actual ACT test. Stephen is a very good tutor because he is motivating and wants the best for his students.

I had Stephen as a tutor before my ACT this month. His classes were very helpful. He has many test taking strategies to share with his students. I especially enjoyed the fact that Stephen motivates his students by talking to them about their colleges options. He is truly an excellent tutor, he tries to make things work for anyone and everyone. I, as a student, highly recommend him as a tutor.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I work most with high school students seeking help in math and/or science. I also do extensive work in the spring and summer with students preparing to take (or re-take) the SAT and/or ACT. I work with students in their homes and have developed great relationships and serve as a resource to their families as they decide on which classes to take, which colleges to apply to, and how best to deal with challenges that may affect their academic success.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

My advice is to meet the person first or at the very least have a conversation with him/her by phone. This way you'll get a sense of the tutors' personality and their philosophy for student learning. So much of this business is more about a student's ability to connect to their tutor's personality and style than whether or not the tutor is knowledgeable. Be clear that the first session is to determine if there is a match with regard to your child feeling that he/she can learn from the tutor's style and take the time to get your child's opinion of how they felt the session went.
