I have been taking guitar lessons from Kimberly via Skype for about six years. I really like her teaching style which is systematic and focused. She tailors her lessons to my goals and time. Her teaching method is to help you gain insight and skill through patient practice of gradually changing exercises. She doesn't snow you with theory, but presents it to you in digestible amounts just when it will make sense. She welcomes questions and I always learn from our discussions. She has led me to learn techniques on the guitar that I was absolutely sure I could never learn. For something to seem impossible at the start, to seem possible a week later and to be routine a month later is amazingly uplifting. Kimberly's background was first a life of teaching herself and playing gigs with all kinds of bands in all kinds of places. She has also deepened and strengthened her knowledge by gaining academic degrees in guitar and jazz and also by studying under masters. This gives her an incredibly deep understanding of learning and teaching music, an immense skill in playing guitar, and an appreciation for the challenges of playing with other people. I especially love her continued enthusiasm for guitar and that she really enjoys teaching. I have found in Kimberly the best of teachers and highly recommend her without reservation.

We hired Mr. Varnell for our wedding and could not have been happier with his performance! Not only a true musical talent, but an honest professional who can walk you through the "in's and out's" with ease on an already hectic day. I was so happy we did not hire a tacky DJ or the same old organ/piano player for our wedding...but instead brought the elegance and uniqueness of the saxophone. We received so many compliments from our guests. Would most definitely hire him again!

5 stars are not enough for Rico... My wedding was in October 2013. I began planning and scouring the internet for spanish guitarists an entire year before my big day. Feedback from other couples is the first impression and the very first thing that stood out to me about Rico was his stellar rating. I contacted Rico via email in Novermber 2012 and he responded to me within the day. I had an opportunity to chat with him on the phone and I could really tell based on that conversation that he was the right guy for the job. We communicated regularly through out the year and I felt really confident that my wedding day was also a priority for him. I can't say enough about my wedding day and the services that he provided for us. There is no other like Rico. He drove in to Vegas from LA the night before my wedding which told me that he is a planner and plans all the logistics ahead of time. He was prompt and punctual. I'm not sure how much thought people put into their DJ's voice but Rico had the perfect voice. He wasn't raspy or nasally and he made the ultimate effort in pronouncing names correctly and working in tangent with all of my other vendors. Rico also took the time to learn a special song that I wanted played as my wedding party walked down the aisle. I could seriously go on and on about Rico. My wedding was an absolute dream and Rico was single-handedly the guy who stole the show. To this day, I listen to a CD that I made with all of Rico's songs and it brings me back to the most wonderful day of my life...

This band was astonishingly talented, professional and easy-going. They played for us at my daughter's "surprise" wedding (guests thought they were coming to an engagement party and we surprised them with an on-the-spot wedding.) The band went with the tide of the evening and accommodated us in every way, including our budgetary concerns. They are incredibly versatile and talented musicians. Our neighbors stopped us in the street the next morning, and I thought "Uh-oh, here comes the noise band noise complaint." Instead, guess what? They wanted the band's contact info for their next event. That says it all. I would hire and recommend them in a heartbeat. Wonderful, kind people.

My now-husband and I wanted to sing together at our wedding. We started working with Kipp a couple of months before the wedding. I had sung in choirs already, but I didn't feel like I always sang in key. My husband had never sung at all, but it was actually HIS idea, so we were going for it. Kipp made us feel safe and comfortable. She will tell you what's wrong, why, and then give you strategies to FIX it. She supported and encouraged us through our nervousness, getting us to work on pitch, rhythm, the mechanics of how to sing in a way that's healthy for your vocal chords, and enunciation. We spent a lot of time on breathing. Kipp said that she wanted us to practice the correct way of singing to the point where our "muscle memory" would be in control, making it so that we would sing correctly without even thinking about it. We're still taking lessons although the wedding was several months ago. I want to sing in a choir again, and feel confident about my voice. My husband is a church deacon, and preaches mini-sermons; he wanted those sermons to include a song, and now we sing them together each time he preaches. We've both improved (the husband sounds good!), and we're much more confident about singing. We'll do this for the rest of our lives. Thanks again Kipp!!!!

Peter is such a talented Musician.!! His vast knowledge of classical music along with his amazing playlist made him a easy choice when it came to us choosing a guitarist for our wedding ceremony. Peter played both pre ceremonial and ceremonial music for our July Mid afternoon outdoor park wedding ceremony and did so in a tuxedo!! He certainly went above and beyond when he informed us he would learn a classical song that' my wife had always dreamed of playing at her wedding. He added his special touch to the song and just absolutely nailed it. Was absolutely amazing!! We received so many compliments from our guests regarding his professionalism and his music. He is just an overall amazing and talented person. One phone conversation with Peter and he gives you the confidence in knowing whatever the event that he has the skills, talent and experience to make your event a unique and special event. For us, we can truly say he made our wedding ceremony a memorable and very special ceremony. If you are looking for a professional and experienced solo Gutarist for you event, look no further. So happy that I hired Sandro Razciel Band to perform at my wedding. Their music was magical. I was crying before even coming down the stairs just by hearing their beautiful music. They made my wedding so special. I would hire them again. They were flexible and did whatever it took to make sure our wedding was perfect. Don't think twice about hiring!

The Sweet 16 party was a blast and Reckless was a hit! The music was fantastic and the vocals were so Rock n' Roll. We had both teens and adults and so many of my guests asked me where I found the band and commented how amazing and fun Reckless was at the party. The band was overall just fantastic. Only one drawback, in between sets we played iPod music that our guests danced too as well. Often when they began the next set the iPod song was cut off right in the middle. Other than that, absolutely no complaints. They were on time, did a great job and created a great fun experience for the guests. The highlight of the night was their grand finale with show-stoppers like "Rock n roll all night," "Don't stop believin" and "Livin on a prayer." To top it off they got my daughter on stage (who the party was for) and had her rockin' out. They gave her an experience and birthday she will never forget. Old and young alike, Reckless was a hit and a favorite. They put on an excellent show and were very professional. I will definitely have them back again for other parties.

My sister's wedding was hard to plan. We had a lot of different people of all ages, so I really didn't know what to do about the music. Nico Delas came up with an awesome set list that was both modern and traditional. Very tasteful, everybody loved it!

I had the pleasure of hiring Michael for a corporate event. He was the sole entertainer for the evening in a rather large venue, and he brought the house down! He has a voice that belongs on American Idol or The Voice, deft guitar skills, and the charisma to charm anyone passing by. Everyone had a blast and the following day I did not stop receiving compliments about the amazing act I booked. Strictly speaking, Michael made me look like a genius. Michael is also very considerate, responsive, and easy to work with. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. Whatever he quotes you, he's worth every penny, because you're basically getting Ed Sheeran + Stevie Wonder in one, at a fraction of the cost! My advice: don't hesitate to hire him because someday after he blows up you'll be glad to say you once hired Michael Barnum for your birthday party/wedding/gala.

First off, Mike Wilson is so amazingly talented and professional! I can't tell you how many compliments we heard at our wedding about "the guy on the guitar". Fabulous! He helped us make a playlist for the guest arrival and ceremony music and it was absolutely perfect! (He has choices that make it really easy, and he even learned a special song that we wanted for when I walked down the isle) He has such a beautiful voice and killer guitar skills! He puts his cool twist on every song and makes it his own, that's my favorite part! A thousand thank you's would never be enough! We can't wait to go see him do his thing again, on the next opportunity we get!

Molly was amazing! She was professional from start to finish! She is amazing! We were lucky to have found her on such short notice and not only was she our officiant, but she sang our first dance as husband and wife. She did a beautiful version of "Sabes" by Reik. It left everyone at the wedding surprised. Not too many people have someone sing while the couple dances. But it wasn't just that, she gave us a ceremony that everyone was talking about. Thank you Molly for your great service. Definitely recommended.

Masatoshi played with his trio for my wedding reception and I couldn't have asked for a better band to play. He was flexible to the weather (it was a rainy reception!), finding a dry place to set up, the rain did not stop them! They really set the mood, creating a jovial and social ambiance. They played while guests were eating and talking and really captured our guests with their talented musicality and and stunning performance. Thank you so much for being a part of a memorable day!

Jonah has been tutoring my son on the trombone for 4 years. My son has made great progress, joined a jazz band, and is inspired by Jonah's talent to practice which is key! Jonah is always a pleasure to work with and has very fair rates. He is also easy to comminicate with and punctual, hence the 5 stars.

The Hybrids played 70s, 80s, and Top 40 at my wedding! They were very professional, and all my guests had fun dancing. The musicians knew how to get the crowd excited and I would recommend them for any event that could use a little jazz. Wesly, in charge of booking, was very considerate and worked with me to choose my favorite songs. Their singer, Alyssa, had a lot of energy and a great voice. Thank you, Hybrids!

I went into their studio to simply lay down a few guitar ideas for some songs I was writing. I mentioned how I heard drum parts in my head to go with my guitars but I don't play drums. The audio engineer suggested I "beat box" my drum ideas and he tracked exactly what I had in mind. I came back home with a legit sounding demo to show my peers in hopes of forming a band. Overall great experience. Would definitely recommend. Great atmosphere, good time!

Very skillful with his guitar and has a very accurate ear, which is very important when you play in a band. He has been teaching me and my friend for two years on a weekly basis, focusing on how to play together in a band. I definitely recommend him to anyone who really wants to improve. He does not appreciate when you come without practicing the current song a little bit at home

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
