Greg at Custom Woodworking did an excellent and professional job on our fence. He was patient with some obstacles that we had with the paint/stain and made sure he helped us get the job done. He did it promptly and went above and beyond, cutting our palms that were close to the fence and we would hire him again!

We had a wonderful experience with Family Woodworking creating 4 very custom vanities for our three concurrent bathroom remodels this last month. They were able to meet our timeline when all other vendors couldn't. Joseph and Joanie are a pleasure to work with and their follow through is great! They were also very good at making adjustments and changes on the fly. Very good craftsmanship and quality. I highly recommend them! Rich and Katie Forster La Crescenta, CA

Tom was very responsive to my inquiries and took the time to find out what I really needed. We discussed my little project and he immediately grasped what needed to be done. He was easy to talk to and straightforward, which I appreciate. Even though I ended up finding someone closer home, I really got the impression he was a true craftsman and had the skills and experience to complete any project. I would definitely call him in the future.

I hired Ian through thumbtack.com to install some carpet to vinyl transition molding at our entry area flooring. He showed up on time, did a beautiful job, and his charges were fair. Plus, he was quite pleasant to deal with. He will definitely be the first person I call in the future for fine woodworking.

Ryan is a perfectionist. When it came to the designing of my custom entertainment center, I told him what I wanted and heade sure that it wasn't anything short of stellar. He takes his woodworking very seriously and you could see it in the quality of his work. I have no doubt that this entertainment center will stand the test of time and look good for many years to come. Highly recommend Ryan for any woodworking project.

This guy is a real artist. He took an antique dresser a previous owner had installed as a bathroom vanity without drawers or protection of the wood and added 8 custom drawers and inlaid glass tile on the top including a beautiful backsplash in addition to refinishing the vanity. I can't imagine this vanity could look any better, and I am so happy I opted to repair it rather than replace it. It is now truly one of a kind. Jim is a perfectionist who did not give up when pieces of the vanity fell apart; he simply added new pieces that appear to have been there forever. If you want something wooden of value created or repaired, seriously, talk to Jim White. You will be amazed. I would love to attach the before an after pics but if you email him I am sure he will send you some as well.

He installed my beautiful wood cabinets and made corrections to the mistakes in measurements that the original contractor made. I felt relieved that I could rely on him to handle the whole process for me since I was too busy with work to handle the details. He also built my gorgeous wood railing (custom colors that he helped me pick to match my taste) and stairs, plus a shelf in my bedroom above the computer desk. All lovely additions to my new home!

Don restored and painted neglected Dutch doors I want to use to replace my front door. There were deep dog scratches in the wood and uneven surfaces. Don did a beautiful job restoring them. No sign of scratches and the paint on them is flawless. You can tell he truely enjoys his art of woodworking and painting. On top of that he gave me a great price too!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
