We just hired Safe Moving for our long distance move from CA to TX. We were very impressed that Brandon drove in from Sacramento to Santa Clara to meet with us at our convenience. We liked the fact that the same people that load will also drive our furnishings on an exclusive truck and unload us at our destination on the exact date of our choosing. No need to compromise our move, it seems as easy as "wishing".

Ruben helped us unload a 26 foot truck following a long distance move and he and his team did a great job. Not only did they hustle and carefully place each item where we requested, but he personally took the time to show us where there was potential damage to furniture while on the truck so we could claim it on our insurance. The man knew how to get the big items up the stairs, and unloaded our entire home while also joking and making an overwhelming experience fun for us. His team was fantastic and we truly enjoyed hanging out with them while it all happened. They used common sense at every turn and were awesome and responsive as our ETA changed and altered throughout the drive up to the area. Thanks for a great experience! We will be calling when we move again!

We moved a few weeks ago and used movers for the first time! It was a great experience! Ralph and his coworker (I can't remember his name!) called to show up a little early if possible, fit everything into the truck like a magic puzzle, using care and caution, and even made sure the fridge, washer and dryer were hooked up and working. Neither of them ever stopped moving, literally! Hard working guys, friendly guys, and well worth it! Thanks guys!!

Ray and Darrell were extremely professional. They responded quickly to our initial request and arrived promptly as arranged. We already had a rental truck but they drove it to our storage unit, shrink-wrapped everything to reduce damage for a long-distance move, unloaded everything from the rental truck to a U-pack truck, and drove the rental truck back to the rental facility. They did a fantastic job of loading the U-pack trailer so that everything occupied six linear feet less than originally planned. Ray also asked us to let him know when the shipment arrives to make sure there everything was safe. We highly recommend them.

These guys were great. They were honest with estimate and even did last second change with no complaints! (They helped move my brother's furniture at same time since his moving company was horrible and left it). Very experienced and professional. The movers obviously knew their job and were friendly on top of that. It was 15 hour move. They never took a break or slowed down the whole time. I'm so lucky I picked the right company!

James and Rick are truly the best in the business. If you are looking to move long distance or local, Sac Elite Moving is the one to hire. Did a move 650miles for a 2 BR 2BA apt with Pianos, TVs, Antiques, plus a 10x10 storage and I am happy to say that James and Rick did a tremendous job loading, keeping things nice and tight in the truck, and unloading as well. Would recommend them if you are looking for movers who are respectful, honest, fair, basically who will get the job done! Two thumbs up! - Harold

I am sorry this is a late review. I moved in November 2014, and Jerome and the Old West Moving crew were the answer to my prayers. They arrived early, and immediately started moving my items (from a house to a smaller apartment upstairs). This was my first time using professional movers, so I was a little apprehensive. I was worried due to the amount of furniture I had, and the time it would take (to avoid getting rained on). Old West moved me and it started to sprinkle right after we were done. I have passed out their business cards to anyone looking for a professional mover, and if I ever need to move again, this will be the first place I call. Thank you Jerome and team!!!

Packing was excellent with no damages. Arrival for pickup and delivery as agreed to. Communication was clear and Pat was very responsive with questions about the moving process. He handled our furniture and possessions with great care for our three bedroom home with stairs. We were very pleased to work with Pat on the long distance move from the SF Bay Area to Phoenix!

Fast Time Movers were outstanding!!! I can't recommended them enough. The owner named Daniel Garcia came 20 mins early and went over what he was going to do and gave an estimate on how long it would take to move our house. They were timely and efficient. Nothing was damaged or broken. If you need a moving company that is professional and reliable use Fast Time Movers!!!

Cherish Moving did a fantastic job moving our things without incident. We had a long distance move so were hesitant to use them instead of a national moving company. This was much better! They were on time and the move out/move in job went well. They are fully certified and insured and we will definitely use them again. Emily and Sergio were fantastic to work with, very responsive and helped us out with everything. I recommend them for either an interstate or intrastate move!

Paul and Katelyn managed all of our requirements with timely responses and quality service, at a price far better than the other quotes we received. They even dealt with an unexpected snowstorm without missing their delivery time. We would highly recommend Paul and his company for any long distance move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
