I dealt with the owner over the phone to set up appointments, and Marcus came out each time. First time was a grout/tile cleaning with grout sealing at our house we were living in. Second was for our family's 2 new construction homes, in which Marcus sealed all of the grout lines for us. Marcus was very nice, respectful, accommodating for our schedules and pets. I will hire again the next time I need this service, (as I have already been a return customer twice). Thanks guys, for the good work and great customer experience.

Shane responded quickly to my request for work with a fair price. He removed tile from my kitchen window area and replaced it with waterproof material that I will put my new countertop on top of when it arrives. Shane was professional and fun to work with. I highly recommend him.

Do not hesitate to call G B Construction for gutter cleaning and replacement and leaf guards. They are prompt, quick, thorough, friendly and professional. Their charges are reasonable, and they do not upsell. I understand that they also do tile and wood floors, painting and household moving. I will be using them again and again.

My experience with Dream Builders is somewhat mixed. I was very happy with how Sam jumped in and help me decide on using tile instead of a three piece plastic surround. He and his helper got right on the job of removing the old tile and damp and moldy sheetrock and insulation. The tub installation and plumbing went well. However, in terms of the new tile installation, I was a little disappointed in the rate of progress. Sam left the tile work to his helper and often was not on the job site to oversee critical portions of the tile work. I suspect this is what resulted in a less than perfect job in terms of matching tile spaces. Also, according to Sam, his truck was in the shop, along with various tools and parts. This meant some extra running around and loss of time to get needed items. In spite of these issues, I would recommend checking out Dream Builders , but I would be a little careful if your project includes tile work.

Victor did an amazing job on our tub/tile renovation. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome to this project. Here are some highlights that really made Victor stand out; very responsiveness when I initially reached out for a quote, punctual each day of the project, gave helpful advice on details I struggled with, kept the materials very clean and orderly when he’d leave at the end of each day, completed the project in just two and a half days, and most of all... it was exactly what we had pictured! We will definitely be using Victor in the future and recommending his services to friends and family.

I had to remodel my rental property by taking out the carpet and replacing it with tile. I got a few bids and Mark was by far the easiest, the most knowledgable and gave us the best quote. He was great to communicate with since he was always responsive and promptly followed through. I was pretty clueless about tile so I had a lot of questions--what type is best? Where should I get it? what size? how much? Mark answered them all, giving us lots of options and even suggesting the best tile stores to shop at for good prices. He was very confidant in what he knew and I could tell he had been doing this for a long time and trusted his knowledge. Mark started during a time that was convenient for the both of us and it was so easy scheduling with him. I was surprised at how fast and wonderfully he did the job since i've dealt with contractors before and it's never been this easy. I live in SF but the rental property is in Sacramento and he helped out by picking up my huge tile order from the store. If he didn't help out with this, I would have had to take a day off and do it myself. Throughout the process, he would take pictures and text me what it was looking like from beginning to end. The most amazing thing that happened is that I overlooked one area that wasn't included in our original plans which is the area around the fireplace. After he was done, he informed me that the fireplace had lost it's luster since it had different tile than the floors. He sent me a picture and we agreed that he would help out with replacing the tile as well. I was so impressed at how much he cares about his work and wants to create a good job. Overall he is the best contractors i've worked with and my property manager has agreed to have him help on other rental property projects. I've also referred him to other friends looking to replace their flooring. He is not only great at his work but such a pleasant man to work with. He is fair, precise, neat, and professional. All that you would need!

I had Juan remodel a restroom, he did an excellent job of demo (cast iron tub, vanity etc). In its place, he laid down the floor tile, the shower pan and built us a tiled shower with a soap box and a shower bench.

If there were a sixth star, I would award it to Osbaldo. This is a bit of a late review as the project was completed prior to Thanksgiving 2014. We had carpeting, tile, and baseboard removed. New tile was laid in the kitchen and half bath. Hardwood flooring and 5 1/4" baseboard were installed in the family room. Moreover, a custom hearth, mantel, and stone facade were added to the fireplace. The result was excellent and we are still pleased with the craftsmanship. We will be hiring Osbaldo again for additional projects.

Jeff Scott did a great job on an outdoor tile project I recently had him complete. He was always professional and on time. He helped me figure out a plan for the tile I wanted to use as well as finding the materials needed to complete the project. Everything was completed quickly and under the timeframe he estimated. It looks great!

I gave KGA a challenge full bathroom remodel in a week in a 100 year old house! We did the painting and some Sheetrock. But he reconfigured the bathroom and major plumbing relocation new shower and tile floor. They finished by deadline (shower door was custom so that got installed a little later). He was clean and thorough. He gave great advice and listened to what I was looking for. I can't wait for our kitchen remodel!

Keith is an excellent handyman who can do just about everything you need up to and including project management. He takes great pride in his work, is always on time, and he is trustworthy. I had him do pretty much everything to get our rental ready for the market. Plumbing, tiling a bathroom, dry rot repair work, you name it he can do it! He went above and beyond and even helped me coordinate with granite installers while we were out of town. I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project and I recommend him heartily.

My home suffered severe water damage and pretty much everything that could go wrong did. Until Greg Buxton at Buxton tile came along. I have never seen a more professional looking job. He was able to start the job quickly and had it done within a week. In total, he tiled my kitchen, entryway, laundry room, spare bathroom and master bathroom. He recommended a flooring store to me and that in itself saved me over $1000 in materials (I was headed for Home Depot, thankfully I was redirected) You will not go wrong with Buxton Tile.

Tom came out in a timely manner to give me an estimate to rip out my old laminate floors and replace with tile. Once I gave the OK, work started promptly and was finished in less than a week. The quality of the install was great and i was pleased with him and his team. I have an issue pop up with a loose tile after all the heavy rains, he came out the same week and fixed it without charge. I would definitely consider using Tom and his team again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.
