I needed a move out cleaning done and hired Moppify. The cleaner they sent was awesome!! She made a mess of a refrigerator look brand new!! Surfaces everywhere were sparkling. She was very nice too. The price was very reasonable for the job I would use Moppify and particularly this cleaner again for sure! She had her own supplies and did an awesome job on an apartment that had been lived in for 3 years by adults, children and pets!! My only complaints are very very minimal! I filled out a job request on a website that referred me to Moppify where I indicated it was a Move out cleaning with fridge cleaning included. It seemed it had not been conveyed to my cleaner that it was a Move out cleaning, not that this was an issue really as she did a fabulous deep cleaning. However the requested refridgerator cleaning had not been included in the work order or price (it was in estimates for other companies the same site offered for hire along with Moppify.) This was an easy fix though which I really appreciate!! I just called the company and added the fridge cleaning. While i did have to pay an extra $20 it was totally worth it and the company was very helpful when I called, and it was no issue for the cleaner who did an amazing job!! We plan to hire the same employee in the future to clean our new apartment. Thank you Moppify! I am awful with names but Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to our cleaner! We needed a reasonably priced professional company to do this job with only 4 days notice...and they were great!

Gregg Curwick is the way to go if one needs to get the job done. Recently, I moved into a new apartment and purchased a bookshelf that I quickly realized I needed assistance with assembling. I listed the job and did not have to wait long for a response. Not only was Mr. Curwick fast to respond but his price was extremely competitive. He arrived earlier than his scheduled time. His demeanor was friendly, open and very positive. Gregg also helped to re-orgranize my apartment so that the space is now being utilized in the most optimal manner. And, if that isn't all...he also has a cleaning service that is top notch. In closing, I highly recommend Curwick Cleaning as the one to "check out" first before going to any other in the Southern California area. Whether one needs cleaning or to assemble furniture, to work with Gregg is a treat and he's efficient too.

Yes, some would think that one wood blind is the same as any wood blind. I regretfully found out that this is not true. I thought I would save time and just purchase the builders window blinds package that was offered when I was selecting the options for my new home. Well, after only six months of living in my home the wood blinds started to warp and crack. They made my brand new home look terrible. It was a terrible investment. I found Made in the Shade Blinds & More and they were able to schedule an appointment with me the following day. They came and educated me on the fact that all wood blinds are not alike and I just wasted a lot of money. They were able to show me wood blinds samples, explain and show me the difference between the wood blinds they offer and the ones installed in my house. All of the window treatments they offer come with a limited life-time warranty. The kicker is - I paid just a little bit more than I did when I purchased the builder package. Made in the Shade Blinds & More is an excellent company and I highly highly recommend them.

Terry is not only a professional but a gentleman. He came and gave me a price when he said he would be their. I had six contractors give me a price and to say they where all on time would be a farce. I had my house repipe so I had apx 32 holes in the walls and ceilings. All the holes were repaired and textured before Terry arrived. I chose Terry over the other contractors and I am glad I did. After he primed my ceilings and painted them he was not satisfied with the out come. He retextured my entire ceiling and repainted it. It turned out fantastic. He repainted the entire down stairs including laundry, bath room ,hall and family room. I could not be happier with the outcome. I would and have recommended him to my friends and family. By the way call him MR. T

Gigi has been cleaning my house for the last 3+ months and has been so helpful and reliable. She consistently shows up every 3 weeks and thoroughly cleans every inch of my apartment and charges only for the amount of time she is working. She also takes the time to clean areas of my house that I neglect or don't even think of (like under my couch cushions). I am very happy to work with her!

This is long overdue but Gina was excellent from beginning to the end. She came to my house and listened to what we wanted to accomplish, took measurements, pictures, and came back with ideas and suggestions. She traveled to furniture store, hardwood store, tile store, and picked out all the paint colors without hesitation. She was very helpful and friendly knows what she's doing in terms of color coordination and decor. I would highly recommend Gina to anyone who's planning to redesign the interior. The before and after look of our family, dining, living, and entry rooms are night and day. We are so happy to have found Gina as our interior designer.

Robyn has helped us buy and sell multiple homes in Orange County over the last 9 years, and she's been an absolute wizard for us, walking us through the process and making sure it went smoothly, and negotiating with some very difficult buyers and sellers to make sure that we got the very best deal and the easiest transaction. She even managed to help us prioritize a few inexpensive upgrades to one house that allowed us to list it for considerably more than we expected, and then ended up selling for significantly above the higher asking price as well, and all in the space of just a few days of being listed. I would not hesitate to recommend her very highly to anyone looking to buy or (especially) sell a house - and I would not hesitate to take her advice while doing so to get the maximum bang for your buck.

I discovered Thomas, four months ago, after three years of online searching for a local interior designer. Something about his website spoke to me. We made contact and haven't looked back!! In the past four months he has designed three bedrooms, my kitchen and courtyard. He also provided onsite help for the installation of a garden area, plumbing and electrical repairs. We have become fast friends and I don't know what I ever did before him! Thomas is not only a talented designer but he is a wonderful person. If you are looking for help with your home, look no further!! THIS is your man!!

I hired Liz to style the living and dining rooms of my Brentwood apartment; she did not disappoint! I really appreciated that she took the time to get a sense for my space, personality, needs, and budget. She knew all the great places to look for fun and unique items and was great at making updates to products based on my feedback. I LOVE my apartment post-Liz. It's feels more feminine, more put together...more me (with flair). I would absolutely work with her again!!

As a realtor, staging a home is vital to a quick sale. Sarah was able to come in, and without being offensive, advise my clients how to prepare their home, how it should look and what to expect with home staging. The sellers were impressed and so was I. I will be using Sarah personally to “reimagine” my home decor soon!! Thanks Sarah! This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship!!!

I hired Sam from Faness creations to move my single bedroom from one apartment to another. Sam is amiable, flexible and very entertaining while he delivers his job as expected. He takes the pressure off of you if you had unanticipated extra work. I would definitely hire him again for other events like party planning, organizing, etc. while I've also recommended him to some of my friends who will be moving out at the end of summer. Overall, great service, punctual and trust-able guy, hire him !

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
