Joyee is an exceptional standardized test tutor. I highly recommend him. I found Joyee after an exhaustive search for help with the PSAT/SAT/ACT for my son. My son's school recommended a large national test-prep company, but after investigating that option, we didn't think it was the right fit. My student already understands these tests and has some experience taking them; he needed a person to get him to the "next level" and not waste time going over basic review/prep. Joyee provides fast-paced and completely personalized instruction. He first diagnoses where a student is along the spectrum of readiness for these tests. He zones in on problem areas and has materials ready to strengthen these areas of weakness. My son has enjoyed working with Joyee and says their sessions have definitely increased his confidence for the upcoming tests. I appreciate so many things about having Joyee work with my son. Joyee is extremely intelligent, energetic, and dedicated; he knows what's he's doing and will provide concise, clear instruction; he has a good website where he exchanges files, keeps the tutoring materials organized, etc.; he doesn't waste time during online sessions (you will get your money's worth). I'd recommend Joyee for help with your student's test prep in any circumstances, but particularly if your child is scoring towards the top end of the scoring range and he/she wants that extra boost. Our family appreciates Joyee's assistance and feels it has been very beneficial to our son.

Areum provided the best learning environment and experience I have ever had. It wasn't until I began working with Areum that I actually engaged in learning outside of school, and was actually excited about it. She has a way of teaching through various methods which makes curriculum easy to remember and fun to do so. She helped me so much on improving my SAT score, as well as in the college application process. My vocabulary and math skills improved greatly within a short amount of time. When it came time to fill out my college applications, Areum helped me plan out which schools were the best fit for me and how we would get there. I definitely did not know anything when it came time to apply, so I am grateful to have had Areum to help me reach my goals. I truly admire the way she connects and builds a bond with her students. She is always there to mentor me and guide me in anything that I have questions about. I've never met anyone who genuinely cares that much about the well-being of her students.

He is a really outstanding teacher. His patience always let me feel very related in his classes. Because I am a International student, and my teachers never used English to teach students before, sometimes I can be very nervous and confused in what teachers say in America classes. But Earl really gives me confidences, which make me believe I can overcome the difficulties I met in my study. Moreover, he really impresses me when he teaches me SAT writing, due to the reason that he separates long sentences for me and tells me which different functions of which different parts of them; this method is very useful for International students such as me. However, few teachers use this method to teach students when they cannot understand the meanings of the long and difficult sentences. Honestly, he did really give me lots of help.

I worked with Sam Kohli between 2014-2015 in preparation for my ACT examination as well SAT Math II, Biology, and Chemistry Subject Tests prior to applying for college. When I first started with Sam, I did not have the hottest test scores (29 and 30 on the ACT) and was in need for guidance for not only raising my score but, more importantly, gaining valuable test taking strategies that would allow me to perform at my peak when testing day came around. I very much enjoyed my time with Sam: both as a tutor and as a friend. Sam's genuinely friendly, determined, outgoing, and patient personality truly make him an amazing tutor and individual you want to work with. Because of Sam's efforts, I was able to score a 35 on my ACT, 800 on my SAT Chemistry, 790 on my SAT Math II, and 750 on my SAT Biology. I am now attending UCLA as a second year Neuroscience Major with a Biomedical Research Minor as a prospective candidate for applying to medical schools come 2019.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
