I really was surprised how fast they were. They really know what they are doing. The cost was so much less than I expected this to be. I don't know why I have never hired moving labor before considering how often I move. This was a very good experience and I will use their service again the next time I move. Thank you!

We hired 3 of Santos' team to help us unpack two PODS. They turned up early and got right down to work, moving furniture and boxes into our house and garage. They handled everything with great care, unwrapping and folding the blankets we had used. They placed everything where we wanted it to be, they assembled the furniture and ensured that everything was working properly before they left. The guys were friendly and professional. I would absolutely recommend Two Friends Movers to anyone looking for help with their move.

Patrick was great to work with. I was moving down the hall of the same building and didn't want to pack/ unpack. He was really flexible, helped me move all the big furniture, put a bunch of things in storage and even helped me put away some stuff!

Could not be more impressed with ReloCal Moving! We are complete slackers who chose to move last minute on the weekend. Thankfully they could accommodate and were a treat to work with. Sam was super helpful on the phone. Robert and Jake were great! They gave us a call when they were on the way- showed up on time- and made the moving process a breeze (saying something, we were like half prepared ha!) The guys were hilarious and brightened what would normally be a very stressful experience. They also treated all our very cheap ikea junk like priceless antiques. Those guys work fast too! They were awesome and the move was...dare I say...fun?! Definitely recommending them to any friends looking for awesome movers in the bay. Thanks y'all!

Jeff & Jesus came down to the SoBay to help us move apts on labor day weekend with no extra/hidden charges or hoops to jump through. I was really impressed with their flexibility (i had to change my move date bc the new apt wasnt ready) & relieved they were still avail to move us that sunday. I still cant believe they moved everything into the new place & set up the furniture how i wanted to, in just 2 hours! I was totally relieved, thankful & grateful for their help. They were respectful, efficient, punctual, & personable. I will absolutely be using their services in the future.

DDT Moving was beyond what I hoped for in my apartment move. In planning the move, Daniel was extremely responsive, efficient, and flexible in scheduling the dates and times. The pricing is more than fair, especially for the work value you're getting from them. Leading up to the move, Daniel confirmed the job and clarified all details. On the day of the move, they were right on time and got straight to wrapping the furniture and packing up the truck. I really appreciated that they were aware of time and were working hard to stay on track. Everything was wrapped carefully and handled safely. They also came super prepared with other materials (like wardrobe boxes) that we might not have had. Their work ethic is extremely impressive, and I would highly recommend them to anyone. Thank you DDT Moving!!

Was absolutely a smooth transaction. I had a labor only move to move a heavy piece of furniture upstairs. Nick and his colleague breezed through it and both the furniture and the house were amply protected through the entire move. Would definitely recommend him to my friends.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I had a small moving project that needed to be coordinated like a Swiss watch movement: a very nice antique bookcase (that I just had refinished) and was transporting myself via a uhaul truck on a Friday morning to a destination some 70 miles away, had to be carefully unloaded and moved. More, I also had to get the displaced furniture moved to the garage (a small entertainment unit and small wooden book case) AND get capable people to do it with basically one day’s notice! The pressure was on! I literally posted my request on Thursday at 3:49 am (couldn’t sleep!). Elite Power Washing came to my rescue! They were the first to respond with a very reasonable quote, agreed to an 8:30 am appointment on Friday, and reassured me that they were up for the task. Mike and Juan arrived promptly, took direction on my suggestions on how to transport the piece (after I had watched how my furniture refinisher and his cohort had moved it), and placed it gently in the right spot. Mike and Juan are calm, courteous, considerate, and caring. They are professional, punctual, and take pride in what they do. I will definitely add them to my roster of professionals that I can count on, and will contact them for future jobs. I will assess my gutters and power washing needs as well... Happy and Relieved! Chris was great, very efficient getting the job done and I would hire him again. The one note I would suggest to Chris moving forward is to be clear about price and offer a revised estimate once onsite. In my case he quoted $90 for a truck load, I asked if it was the truck in the picture and he simply said a regular truck. He arrived in a truck like the picture. I had a sectional sofa, a chair, small dresser and 4 stacking chairs and at least a standard truck load of debris. In the end Chris charged me $240 which was more than I anticipated but I paid the bill, Chris had done a good job and all my junk was gone. All in, he was at my home 1.5 hrs. After the fact he told me he charged by the truck load. If I had understood that going in I might have purged a few more things!

We called Clutter to help us move between apartments. The set up process was seamless and the person on the other end was great and funny. On moving day Alex S, Alex P and Darnell W came in on time, were extremely efficient and were fun to talk to. We were done in 4 hours! Alex being a magician with the ikea set up helped a ton too! They were great at navigating the tricky corners and didn't miss a beat even in the 90 plus heat. We loved the experience with clutter and we will definitely call on them again! Way better than all the last movers combined!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
