We've been working with Garrett and S.O.T.A. Construction since February 2016 in opening our restaurant called 'Aina in San Francisco and we couldn't be happier. He came in and gave us a quote on some minor work needed and had some cool ideas. From there he ended up taking on more than we had planned after seeing his work. The work he does is fast and clean, and he always has a new idea or solution before a problem even occurs. He's kept us incredibly on budget coming up with solutions within our spend, as well he's been VERY up front about any cost and keeping any additional work cost transparent. There were no surprises in any payments, he worked hard, and had amazing communication with us. He also did a great job doing custom woodwork for us for our bathroom, tables, a brand new wine rack, outfitting a whole wooden bar, etc etc. He was also knowledgable about restaurant quotes, permits required etc which really helped us throughout the process on an important commercial job. Very responsive and all round great guy. Overall Garrett and S.O.T.A. Construction went above and beyond on what we had asked for. Highly recommended.

Mark is absolutely amazing! I wish all contractors could be like him. He is professional, friendly, very courteous, and his work is beautiful. I hired him to make custom cabinets for the bathrooms and he walked me through each step to customize my design. When he was unable to find a matching color for the countertop, he contacted a company he works with so I could look through pieces of granite and find a match. He installed the cabinets this weekend and the workmanship is beautiful. Solid wood, matching stain, and soft closing drawers. The price is on point as well. I would venture to guess that something of this size would be about the same price at Ikea, or some other cheap furniture place that uses particle board and laminate. I will be using Mark for all my custom woodwork needs - and there will be plenty.

Christian and his team built a beautiful wooden picket fence in front of my parents Lodi home creating a courtyard for them and their two little dogs. He is pleasant and knowledgeable as well as talented. We even paid him extra to paint it. Country Boy Construction arrived early for the estimate and was prepared to do the work two days later. He probably wishes he would have started a little earlier in the morning because it went past 5:00 and they seemed to be rushing the final paint job. Mom was a little sad about the overspray on some things but most is greenery and will grow out. The finished job looks fantastic and mom and dad are happy that their little dogs are secure. Thank you Christian

We had a custom closet built and it turned out exactly how we envisioned it. Scott was great to work with, response via email or phone and worked up a few quotes to ensure we got exactly what we wanted and kept within our budget. Overall, highly recommend Accent Woodworks & Remodeling

I recently bought and began remodeling a new home. I hired Rick to build new kitchen and bath cabinets. He gave me great advice as I was going through the decision making process. He showed me my options for design style, wood selection, stain selection, and design. After the decisions were made and he got my project underway, it went very quickly. The finished product was just beautiful. He installed it quickly and efficiently. The transformation from the old kitchen and baths to the new was simply breathtaking. There were glitches along the way, but Rick handled them all with ease. He made me feel comfortable and taken care of. In the end, it turned out to be a great experience. And that wasn't even the best part, his price was the best I found! A great product at a great price. It doesn't get any better than that. I feel I definitely got the most for my money. I will definitely do business with him again, and I am happy to refer him to my friends and family.

I met Don online while researching woodworking with re-purposed rustic wood material. Don invited me to come to Sutter Creek where he showed me his beautiful hand-made furniture. I can't forget his many pieces made with oak from french wine barrels and an amazing single-slab long bar made from a fallen redwood. I found a bunch of useable material to buy from him and he gave me some great woodworking tips. Afterwards I spent part of the afternoon working with Don organizing his wood material I Recommend Don for your job. I would hire Don in a heartbeat for any skilled craft or creative endeavor.

I hired Mark Dull to take down and my old fence and build a new one including 2 new gates. He did a beautiful job and I am very pleased with his work. He was prompt in returning my calls and showed up on time every day. Mr Dull carried himself well and was very professional and polite. I will defiantly contact him again for his services and I will recommend him to friends and family who are looking to hire someone in his field of expertise.

I hired Robert to do a dry rot repair for a VA loan. The job needed to be done quickly and professionally. They went over and above my expectations so much so that I paid them above the contract price we agreed upon. I would definitely use them again for any woodworking job I had need of!

About

All my urns are one of a kind, dovetailed, and assorted woods (cherry, oak, walnut, mahogany, and ash). All the material is pre-stained and then made, which makes a very unique combination of natural woods and stain. The tops are cut hip roof-style with a sliding secret compartment for documents, jewelry or whatever. These urns are more of an heirloom urn, the ones that you just don't know what to do with, so you put them on a fireplace mantel or hand them down to the family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
