Kym is an amazing person!! She is wonderful to work with and did an amazing job educating us on how to train our dog, a 6 month old German Shepherd. She loves what she does and it is very apparent in her work. I highly recommend her!

Mark was fantastic, he definitely helped my boyfriend and I understand our german shepard/husky mix a bit better and gave us lots of tips on how to fix our concerns with her, which was barking and even growling/lunging at people. We will definitely be going back in a few months for a follow up and will go to him for all our future dog training needs. He kept things easy to understand and you can really tell he is passionate about what he does. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a dog trainer

Daniel really knows his stuff. We now have 2 happy and friendly German shepherds. All the advice we received on introducing a new dog to our family worked. After 3 hrs of training session and about 7 days of follow the steps/advise….from walking w/muzzles, walking 20 feet apart, and finally walking side by side with no aggression, Max (new dog) and Foxy accepted each other. We are very happy with the success we had and we highly recom’d Daniel to work with your dogs.

Christina and I would like to thank you for the wonderful job you and your associates did with our 1 year old German Shepherd Dog "Jack". When we brought him to you , he had a strong, independent spirit and we had difficulty getting him to know what we expected of him. We choose to board him with you rather than commit to several weekly lessons. We were pleased with our decision. You delivered a well- behaved, disciplined dog, who's spirt had not been broken yet with a heart for obedience. Your "Fun, Fair, and Firm" system was easy to learn. Jack is now a joy to have in our home, as protector and companion. If anyone should wish for names and /or numbers for a reference , please do not hesitate to give them our name and number.

My friend recommended Tommy to me when i got my German Shepard puppy. it was his best idea ever! Tommy was so kind and gentle eith the 4 And 2 legged members if his class. He asked about what food we were feeding, what our breeds were made for,etc and then began training the Owners rather than the dogs. After 6 weeks we saw improvement in bith the owners and dogs and after performing thr basic commands and a trick, we all received diplomas! I loved the place so much that i let Simon go to doggie day care to socialize with dogs of all sizes and breeds. 2 years later i got another shepard, Lancaster, and Tommy’s training helped me so much having 2 large boys but they are so sociable and friendly and i love them to death and they love their Mommy. Thanks ro Tommy’ classes we have a happy househokd !!

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

We hired Dixie for our 4 year old shepherd for her anxiety issues. We had a very bad experience with another "dog trainer" so we were apprehensive about any dog trainers. Dixie was referred to us & we are so glad we called! She is wonderful! Patient, calm & a wealth of information! In 2 weeks with her help & advice we are seeing improvements with our dog! I highly recommend Dixie.

Obedient instructor, Rose, is a great trainer because she has helped my German Shepherd to be okay around other dogs and this is amazing otherwise my aggressive dog would harm other dogs. Instructors April and her Husband make my other German Shepherd cannot wait to attend agility class. I like Dog Services Unlimited so much that I signed up for Frisbee class and cannot wait to enroll in this as well as Work-And-Play classes.

Jesus is an exceptional dog trainer who is professional and really loves his job. He trained my German Shepard mix who is a rescue and was very undisciplined prior to training, but after the training I couldn't believe how well behaved my dog was. I had a great experience and I would highly recommend Jesus to anyone looking to get their dogs trained.

Kate has been working with me and my over reactive German Shepherd Max. She has dramatically improved a behavioral issue with other dogs which at times I felt was hopeless. She has accomished huge results in a short period of time with kindness and patience. Her knowledge of dog behavior is very impressive and she is a pleasure to work with. Max loves her! She is a true professional and really cares about you and your dog. I have no doubt Max would not have made the progress he has if it weren't for Kate!

Kevin is a professional trainer: I was fortunate to have him answer my request for a puppy trainer: at the time two puppies...after one training session I realized that I had one puppy too many and found my aggressive puppy a kingdom of his own! giggle Kevin showed up on time each Saturday (6 lessons) and arrived prepared with a training agenda that he held to: My puppy is 4 months old, male and German Shepherd so it is extremely important because of the size dog he will become for him to have good training and manners! Kevin taught him: to sit/stay, to walk calmly on lead (not pulling on the leash), to go up and down a car loading ramp. I am (extremely grateful for this training because it is a relief to have it done in preparation for the future). Kevin and I walked 'Bear' down the street to socialize him with the neighbor dogs...he learned to walk by them without challenging them to a 'fence-run-bark'! We are still working on this. I was a bit apprehensive when beginning training and Kevin told me "when you are nervous it travels all the way down the leash in to the dog and the dog knows"... We graduated Basic obedience training last Saturday 12-17-16 and received a Merit Certificate for both of us and Bear received a Rawhide bone too. Kudos to Kevin for such good training and patience with both of us! I highly recommend him for your training needs...

Absolutely the best choice. I have a 11 week old german shepherd who couldnt learn with 2 other trainers. Pure canine is the most helpful and is a real pleasure to work with. My dog is doing great and we can now share a mutually happy life. I did the 4 week course and in that short time we covered sit, down, place, leave it, drop it, repsect threshold, drop it and bark and quite on command, and create trainning. I will be signing up with her again for advanced training.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
