Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Move from one area in Burlingame to San Bruno. One bedroom apartment. The move took about two and a half hours and was a little bit more expensive than I would have liked. Movers were nice and very professional. One concern was that some of our furniture was damaged in the process.

I highly recommend Two Friends Movers. We moved an entire 2 bedroom to a new unit in our complex within 3 hours. The team was very professional, wrapped our furniture with care and didn't complain about the 3 flights of stairs. I will use Two Friends Movers again.

If possible, I would leave 0 stars... because they never showed up. We confirmed a date for 2 movers well in advance of our move and agreed the movers would arrive in the morning. A couple of days before our move, I got a text from the owner, Jiri, asking if it would be ok for the movers to arrive at noon on our agreed upon date. I told him we needed them to come in the morning, at the latest by 10am, as we had a long drive in the Uhaul truck ahead of us, and if they wouldn't be able to accommodate, I would need to hire another company. Jiri assured me that they would arrive by 10am, but likely between 9-9:30am. Very long story short, at 10am we received a call from someone who said he was helping a moving company (he couldn't remember the company name), and he would arrive with another mover in more than 30 minutes. He was never to be heard from again and Jiri strung us along until about 11:45am. We realized we could not rely on Jiri, so we ended up figuring out other means to move our stuff. Moves are stressful enough; I would HIGHLY recommend finding another moving company that communicates better and doesn't double-book themselves. Our lease ended that day, and if nice neighbors weren't able to help us, we wouldn't have been able to move our stuff out.

Alejandro was awesome! My schedule changed, and he was super flexible and switched my move from Sunday to Saturday. He kept me updated throughout the day to let me know his exact ETA. I asked for two movers for my 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment. When they showed up they were ready to work, and quite efficient! They supplied a truck, moving blankets, a dolly and plastic wrap to protect my furniture. They also disassembled and reassembled my bed and dining room table. The whole move took a little over 4 hrs, which was a little longer than I'd hoped, but ultimately l was stress free! They are great, and I would use them again! Thanks Ale's Movers!

I hired a 4 man team to move to a new 2 bedroom apartment in the same building just a floor above. The night before the move I hurt my back packing and could not finish. I contacted Mike at 9pm at night by text message and he replied back and said it was no problem that his guys could move/pack the items I could not. I was really relieved to hear that and amazed at the level of customer service being 9pm way past there business hours. The moving team showed up right on time and got right to work. Not a scratch or ding on any wall, floor or any of items they moved and they even setup the bedroom furniture in the places I wanted it. Amazingly quick and efficient. They finished about 15 mins before the 3 hour mark. I budgeted for 5 hours so I was very happy it only took 3. I would recommend them to anyone and I will use them again next time I move.

I recently (late 2020) decided to move from the Bay Area to Miami, thank God I was finally able to escape. When I started the process of finding a moving company that could handle my move, I was very surprised to see how few options there actually were. Many of the “van lines” were trucking operations that would pack up your stuff, store it along with other people’s stuff, then transport it, but you’d have to wait 3-5 weeks before your stuff got to you. No thank you. From the first time I spoke with Ilya of Traust Moving, I was impressed with his professionalism and down to earth nature. No BS, just straight dialogue on what was entailed with such a long distance move and an early estimate of what it would likely cost. I finally did find another moving company out of the Sacramento region, but my gut instinct told me that Traust Moving would be the best option, even if it cost a little more. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. My concerns were set aside once I met with Ilya for a walk-through. Of course he came with his mask on, and it didn’t take too long to confirm the estimate and timeframe. Appreciated the precautions and efficiency, and also taking the time to answer all my questions. On the day of the move-out, the guys actually arrived 30 minutes early! Ten minutes later, I let them in, and they went to work right away. No standing around, no complaining, no staring at their phones, they just dove in and got to work. I paid an extra fee for them to pack up the majority of the condo, which saved me immeasurable stress and time. They were careful while packing up my belongings, taking the time to ask questions when it was warranted. They ended up finishing a bit early, and all was well. Once in Miami on the day of the move-in, Ilya once again showed up early, I have no idea how he got into the building lol. He met me at the front door of my new place, and we were able to get started right away. He expertly handled the service elevator and getting everything brought in. The guys followed my directions on where things should go with much professionalism and care. After a while it felt like a friend was helping me move, as we started cracking jokes and talking about a lot of we had seen in the brief time in Miami. Overall, Ilya and Traust Moving made this cross-country move a relatively stress-free experience, handled with much professionalism and efficiency. Once the initial move-out started, I knew I was in good hands, and had zero concern whether or not they would show up on move-in day. As I previously mentioned, I did pay a bit more than another quote I had received, but at this point, I was absolutely fine paying for much higher quality. I even agreed to make a down payment to secure the services on the days I needed, which is not something that I would normally do. But the entire experience in working with Ilya and Traust Moving was outstanding! If I had the opportunity to work with them again in the future, I wouldn’t hesitate, nor would I hesitate in recommending them to friends and family who might be looking to make a long distance move. Thanks again guys!
