I was very pleased with Stephen Box and his crew. They came out when scheduled, did a great job and cleaned up after themselves. Stephen is honest, courteous, knowledgeable and professional. I would not hesitate to have him in my home for all of my repairs/construction needs.

Houman was a professional from the beginning to the finish of this project for our math learning center. The quote was clear and very fair, and he worked easily with our schedule. The workmanship throughout the job was done with high quality materials and excellent handiwork. We rehired him for another job doing electrical and additional remodeling in the center's bathroom. I will be hiring Houman for additional work in the future and will also recommend him to others with no hesitation.

As the Project Manager for an upgrade to a condo for resale, I hired Emmy Hyde to do the work. She did a great job! Her attention to detail was impressive and she was very easy to work with. As an Interior Designer, I work with a lot of contractors who assume I know nothing about their trade and often condescend or disregard my opinion. On the contrary with Emmy, even though she knows her trade well. Will definitely hire her again.

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

I originally called the finish doctor 3 years ago to put a outdoor play set together...he has since been to my home many times to complete various construction projects on our home throughout the remodel process. His attention to detail is such a blessing. He fixes so many things that I would not have paid attention to in order to ensure his work was done correctly without a million extra charges. He has always been reasonable and fair in regards to pricing. Overall good guy that does great work!

I have hired S & S Electric before this time it was for electrical and lighting in a bathroom remodel that my husband and I had done. Among all the other contractors that were on the job they stood out among them all as the most professional and cleanest contractors. Love my new lighting that they helped design! Very trustworthy and honest service! I would highly recommend their service!

My experience with Jordan Box, he is quick to respond, honest, gives realistic estimates based on work to be preformed, knowledgable, professional, and resourcesful. Based on our initial conversation about my project I decided to hire Jordan because it is apparent that he takes great pride in his work and will treat your project as if he was building it at his own home. I am happy I hired Jordan to do my bathroom remodel and looking forward to the next project with him as soon as this project is complete.

Tom and his team did a great job redesigning and remodeling our kitchen about a year ago. He put a lot of thought into how we use the kitchen, and found some cool solutions to our small kitchen space. We'd definitely hire him again!

We just completed a project with Mana Design Build and we couldn't be happier with the result. The kitchen looks amazing! We recently bought a house and it needed major updates. Initially, we were going to work with our general contractor to remodel the entire house, but after reading reviews about Mana Design and their custom cabinetry, my husband and I were excited to tour their showroom. After the visit to their showroom and meeting Mazi and his team, we were sold. We don't have a big kitchen space, but Mazi was able to design a layout that works perfectly for our kitchen. They are very knowledgeable, professional and helpful. With a complete home remodel, we had to schedule and time every task correctly to make sure the project completes on time. We had so many requests, but they were willing to work with our aggressive schedule. The whole team was incredibly easy to work with and they are very responsive. Due to city approvals and permits, our project got delayed by 3 weeks. Mana Design finished our cabinets on time and they were willing to hold our cabinets in their warehouse until the house was ready. During the installation stage, the team did a superior job. They paid great attention to detail and cleaned up the work site nicely after the project was completed. We absolutely love our new custom kitchen and eating area. The quality of the custom cabinetry is very high-end and top-notch. Thank you Mana Design team for giving us the kitchen of our dreams! We had such a positive and great experience working with Mazi and his team. We highly recommend Mana Design Build! Anna & Bob

The communication was perfect, the final project (a large one) came in exactly as quoted, and Carlos and his crew work FAST. The long version: I needed to gut the kitchen on a 2 story, 100 year old home which included removing 2 load bearing walls. It was extremely difficult to compare kitchen remodel quotes because the wall removal line items were all over the place or could not be determined by the various remodelers we met with. I decided to remove the walls before I got any additional remodel quotes. I found Skyline Framing on Craigslist, and then did my due diligence reading reviews and verifying they have a current license (for most projects I don't care about licensing, but you never want to take a chance with structural). I spoke to a few contractors, received a few quotes - Carlos thought of a few options the other contractors had not - but when comparing apples to apples he was charging 30% less than the next lowest quote, and because of his knowledge and professionalism I had no reservations about working with him. From the time I handed him the plans that were approved by the city, the entire job took 7 business days to complete (and keep in mind he had to go to the foundation and pour new concrete pads to support the new beams - and the job required 2 city inspections). These guys work FAST!

We wanted to finish our garage floor with Epoxy and convert part of the garage to a home gym. After extensive research and several quotes, I was very impressed with Grant at the GarageMasters as they specialize in garage rehab and use the best products available in the market. His price was extremely competitive, and he did a remarkable job and stayed true to his time line and estimate. He even repaired some foundation cracks and did not charge extra. We are very happy with the outcome of the floors. Thank you!

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

My experience with contractors has not always been favorable, however, Artisan Design & Build has set a new standard of EXCELLENCE. Sidney, the head contractor, was able to understand what I wanted/needed and made suggestions that were cost efficient. Not only is the work first-rate and aesthetically appealing, he was able to complete the jobs before the deadline.

Selecting a contractor to remodel anything is not easy but after meeting Phil we knew he was the guy to do some work in our bathroom. We'd already had a so-so experience with a Big Box Store kitchen remodel and knew we wanted a 'notch up' from that experience. The project is not quite finished but we are extremely happy with the results so far. Our tiny little bathroom has been transformed into a beautiful spa-like comfort zone. Brandon, Rick and Phil have been total professionals, each with their own expertise and together an awesome team. Would we recommend HomeStar? Yes, in fact we already have!

We hired Jeff from Rick Dorn Constrution to install some kitchen cabinets in our remodel. We had cabinets picked out already and he recommended some others of better quality for less. Installation took 2 days and he cleaned up after himself. He also pointed out some other things that should be fixed on our project which was greatly appreciated. We would work with them again.

We hired Nick Sinyuk as our contractor for a complete kitchen remodel. We chose Nick based on his high Thumbtack ratings, as well as both his (low) estimates for cost and time completion of 2 weeks. While the job took him 4 weeks rather than 2, he worked very hard to build a beautiful kitchen that has received glowing reviews all-around. He cut no corners, used quality materials, and sought our input on every decision and detail. He rebuilt our kitchen from scratch -- this included: installation of a new wood floor that is immaculate, built a dreamy custom island, refinished our ceiling, and built an entire kitchen cabinet and counter area that maximized our space and storage. Our kitchen is a dream -- it is truly a chef's designer kitchen. We would hire Nick again based on his skilled craftsmanship, pricing, and timely work.

J Cor Construction provided me with a proposal to remodel my Kitchen, the Forman came out and let me show him what I wanted and he was able to put together an estimate. Jeremy was able to come out and review the estimate with me and I decided to go with it. It was very reasonable compared to other contractors. The entire remodel took 3 weeks and I couldn’t be any happier! It’s a new kitchen!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
