Tom built my 12 X 10 Cedar Pergola from SAM's club. Tom told me he was going to be at my home at 1100.He arrived at 1055. That's when I knew I picked the right guy. Tom is a professional and very friendly. He is open to communication and suggestions. His price for the project was the most affordable for me. My family is enjoying our Pergola, Thanks Tom. I would hire Tom again for any future projects.

He showed up a little late; but went right to work. From beginning to end, it took him approximately five (5) hours to tear down an old building in the backyard and remove the debris from this area and behind the house. He did not bring his largest truck, so he had to make one trip to the dump to complete the job. We were very pleased with the job and would use him again.

All, I requested Mr. Resendiz to lay a reinforced concrete slab and build a strong building on top of it so I can have a gym in my back yard. Overall I am extremely satisfied with his work. After calling numerous companies to obtain quotes, Mr. Resendiz beat all of them by a significant margin and exceeded the quality I was looking for. I ultimately was looking for a heavy duty slab that could withstand abuse such as powerlifting and a "meat and potatoes" structure on top of it. From the ground up, everything they did was aweome. With the slab, they reinforced it with re bar for added strength. With the "shed", they used treated wood for the base to stand up to any possible moisture as well as installed diagonal braces to all the walls for extra rigidity. I have added pictures below which hopefully show his good work. I look forward to using them again! V/R, Adam

Hired JC handyman to build and install two new fence gates on each side of my house. My gates were pretty beat up and the posts were broken. He came out to take measurements and we decided on a day for him to come back to do the job. I had something come up the day we decided on. So I messaged JC handyman to reschedule. He kindly said it wasn't a problem and we decided on another day he could come by. The gates he installed are just what I asked for. I had the posts replaced one gate widened and the other gate made taller. They seem sturdy and open and close with ease. I am happy with the work JC handyman did at my home. I'll keep him in mind if anything else comes up that needs fixing. Thanks again

John did a great job hanging our solid core doors! These were not pre-hung doors and required hinges to be morticed, set, and handle cutouts to be made. He even had to build the door jambs. He handled it like a pro! In addition to his quality work, John was prompt, friendly, and cleaned up after himself like he was never there. We will definitely use him again for future projects!

I am a first time homeowner and when I moved to my house I know I have some projects to get done. I searched online to find nearby contractors, but what caught my confidence and attention are the good reviews for Matt. So I set up for him to come and see my projects. I wanted to have the sides of my driveway cemented and build a back cemented patio with cover. He gave me an estimate and explained to me the process. I can sense his sincerity and professionalism and I know that I am in good hands. I told him that at least get done with the cement by the sides of my driveway since its almost Memorial Day and we have visitors coming in. He made it happened, he delivered and boom the front of my house looks pretty. The covered patio at the back is amazing, now we can bbq and use the back patio for future bbq parties with my family and friends. No complain at all and he is highly recommended.

We chose Mark to build a wooden fence for our backyard. Right from the start Mark was prompt, professional, & a pleasure to work with. He was on time for our initial meeting. (5 min early in fact) He provided his bid that evening via email as I had requested. He even dropped of his materials the day before the estimated start date, after checking to make sure it was ok by me, so that he could knock a full days work on day 1. He completed the fence on schedule and it looks great. He even came back after completion to replace a board that was cracked on the bottom, which was no fault of his, just a bad piece of lumber. I would definitely feel confident in recommending Mark to friends and family.

I think your company is the best. In fact, I know you're the best. And I would like to tell you why as I am personally very grateful for all the build/design work you have done for me to date. As you know, I spent an inordinate amount of time researching and interviewing general contractors as I went about upgrading my home last fall. I asked you to present a bid for several interior and exterior projects that included installation of crown and baseboard moulding, replacing the casings around the doors, a new front entry door system, outside shutters, cabinetry and a new mantel around the fireplace and closets. Your bid was not only more than fair and competitive, it was prompt and complete with all the details. You made many design recommendations and suggestions which I have particularly come to appreciate as the projects got completed. Throughout the construction period, you personally not only returned phone calls promptly, but also your crew and foreman showed up when they said they would and always respected my own personal time and commitments. They always made sure I was kept informed as to what to expect and cleaned up after every day. They were simply terrific. Most importantly, you presented a contract that you literally adhered to throughout our projects. We didn't have one issue of disagreement. Yes, we made changes but you were again more than fair in accepting and working with those changes. What now gives me the greatest pleasure, other than enjoying what I have done to my home, are the many people who ask, "Who is your design/ build contractor?" I am only too pleased to pass along your name. I am very much looking forward to working with you on additional projects I have planned to make my home one of the best around. J. Hughes

On 20 January, 2017, Mr. Glenn Westburg completed the hand painting of a kitchen/dining area (18 FT x 16FT), large living room (18 FT x 20FT) and a foyer with a ceiling extending 20 FT in height. Each room required 2 coats of paint. In addition, Glenn painted and installed baseboard molding in the living room. The work was immaculately performed. There was no mess anywhere, and no rework was required. He impeccably cleaned up upon completion of each room. All work was completed in an agreed to timeframe and budget. In addition to the painting, I contracted with Glenn to build a custom cabinet in the kitchen which included a cork material backing, 3 pull-out drawers, hinged doors with pull handles, and a stained finish all with spectacular results. I highly recommend Glenn to fulfill your painting requirements and cabinet work. EC

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
