I’m a homeowner and needed to refresh-remodel our kitchen & bathroom(s). We own a fairly large house (5,400 sqft) which is on the older side (1960’s style) and it badly needed an upgrade to make necessities (kitchen, bathroom) more functional.
We reached out to several contractors on &’off Thumbtack for this project. Upon meeting Scott, owner of this company, we felt at ease. His attitude, ability to patiently listen and understand what we wanted out of this remodel & his ideas henceforth to make our home once again look..fantastic, for lack of better word.
Scott (& his crew) were always punctual, were extremely professional, cleaned behind them each day (which is v important to me as we are clean freaks), & finished the project before their scheduled timeframe. In all, they remodeled 4 bathrooms and a kitchen.
We were very pleased with their work. Our friends and neighbor have complemented us on how things came out. Thank You ‘SD Strong Construction’ for an excellent job. We are sure to call them for our next project..installing Hardwood flooring throughout our house.

Hired on Thumbtack
Our experience with Scott, the sole proprietor at SDStrong Construction, was both good and bad. We hired him for a 30K+ master bath renovation, which was of medium difficulty. It required some advanced requirements such as a barrier free shower entry that required some floor resturcturing, installation of a pocket door, plumbing, electrical, and installing large format (2'x4' and 4'x4') tiles. Although he seemed a bit inexperienced, we decided to take a chance on him because he professed
a real committment to quality.
For the first 90% of the project, he did indeed exhibit great skill and attention to detail. Unfortunately, near the end when he was within a week of his next job, it all went out the window and the only important thing was getting the job done, quality be dammed.
The worst example was when he installed the backsplash, which was 12"x12" sheets of hexagonal tiles, he left a 1/4" unsightly gap between the edge of the backsplash and the mirrors. (See the attached pictures) I believe he did this because he was in a hurry. When we asked him about why the large gap, he lied and said it had to be that way because of the mirrors on the edge of the medicine cabinets. When we asked him how he was going to make it look acceptable, he said he would fill it with caulk. This would have been a disaster, which we proved by photoshopping a picture of the actual tiles with caulk mocked in. But he steadfastly refused to fix it correctly, which required a half day of work. Eventually we had to hire a tile person to redo the problem areas the right way, at our own expense, which we then deducted from his final payment.
As another example, when we pointed out that the electrical outlet UNDERNEATH the vanity was not GFC protected as required by code, he tried to convince us that it was not required. Code requires that any outlet within 6 ft of a sink be GFC. And obviously an outlet 3 ft away, and UNDERNEATH the sink, is the MOST likely to experience water in a leak or flood. So this was patently ridiculous. And it demonstrates how he was willing to say something he must have known to be false, just to get to his next job. Which put at risk our family's safety.
His inexperience was most evident in his misplacement of the toilet flange. For some reason he was unaware that it should be 12" from the FINISHED wall, not the unfinished studs. It ended up 11 1/4". As a result, 90% of all toilets made for 12" rough in do not fit. The toilet I purchased had to be returned, and I had to pay 3x the plumber fee for installing the toilet as a result.
His inexperience was also evident in his use of subcontractors for
plumbing and electrical. One of the features of hiring an experienced contractor is that they can get decent pricing for subcontractors and pass the savings onto the client. However, he seemed unaware that his subs were charging him top dollar for their services, and he passed the extra expense onto us when we decided to do extra electrical work in the adjoining bedroom.
