I have been going to Bill for 4 years now and he has really helped me understand not only the fundamentals of the golf swing but the energy the body should create to achieve the most consistent results a player is looking for. Using the energy your body creates will help re-shape your golf swing from the ground up, and Bill has been instrumental in this way of teaching. Adam 6 handicap.

Bret has been of tremendous help with my golf game. In just a matter of minutes he was able to spot a flaw in my swing which enabled me to almost immediately get rid of an irritating slice that had been bothering me for months. I've known him for years and solicit his advice whenever I'm having problems with my game. Jennifer Pretak

Michael is probably the best golf coach I have ever had. I am a mid-handicaper (~15), aiming for single-digits. For a long time, I have wanted to make changes to my swing. After just 2-3 classes with Michael, we had arrived a result I was very satisfied with. That was significantly less time than I had expected. Michael is a big believer in that there are countless good golfswings, none are perfect - and it's no point chasing the perfect swing. Thus, he only changed small things - but those things made big differences in striking angle, ballspeed etc. Changing small things is way easier than making the structural big changes, and thus it is much more natural to have trust in the teaching. Michael only made me change one or two things at a time, and the results became apparent very fast. I am very grateful for Michaels teachings; now (finally) I feel I have the proper fundament for further improvement. Also, Michael is a Great guy. He stayed overtime on several occasions (without cost), and he is very proactive in suggesting the appropraite next steps. I will highly recommend Michael for other players. He has an eye for it, and is very pedagogic in his approach.

Josh is a great golf coach, very encouraging and personable. He does an excellent job of breaking down your golf swing and keeps his advice simple. I have benefitted from focusing on 1-2 key items at a time. Josh recently gave me tips on some drills that I could use to practice putting and the advice was very helpful!

Tim started out by asking me questions about what I think about a golf swing. He got me to articulate some things I had thought about but never put into words and some things I had never thought about. He showed me another lens for looking at what is happening in my swing and why. It was, simply put, about the body following the mind. Tims philosophy on the golf swing is to work on swing mechanics away from the ball with the goal of winding and unwinding the body and allowing natural movement of the club in a pendulum-esk motion. Then when at the ball, there should only be one "swing thought" in the mind and the body should be relaxed so that it can reflexively follow the minds intention; which is set by the swing thought. I found I had two great results after the lesson: 1) it worked such that I was consistently hitting the ball better and could identify what was off when I missed a shot and 2) the feeling of hitting the ball was so much more enjoyable in my mind and body. I intend to continue to go to Tom for instruction and will also have my girlfriend get some beginner lessons from him.

As a collegiate golfer trying to improve my game and fix my swing, Gary has been more than helpful and professional in helping me with my goals. He is a professional in his craft from the moment you first speak to the first lesson and onward. My game is steadily improving in a very short period of time thanks to Gary, and he's really helped me regain lost distance. I would highly recommend Gary to anyone, beginners and competitors alike.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.
