I help manage 70+ properties at Now Realty Group and have had a lot of bad experiences with hiring Electricians. I'm happy to say that I had a wonderful experience working with Jose! He got out to my electrical job within 24 hours of my contacting him and he arranged the appointment directly with the tenant so I didn't have to be the middle man, saving me a lot of time. After going out to our rental property and assessing the problem and finding that the electrical outlet he went out to change out was working fine, he said there would be no charge! No one does that anymore, I was very impressed! I have found Jose to be very professional, prompt and honest. I will be using him for all of my electrical, plumbing, painting & drywall jobs from here on out. Jose went above and beyond my expectations and I would highly recommend him.

I own 10 restaurants here in San Diego Called Pegahs kitchen, I have met many contractors throughout my career and Michael & his crew have really surpassed all of my expectations. I met many painting contractors and new right away Michaels Discount Painting was the company for me. I wrote him on thumbtack and he responded quickly, we met for an estimate that following morning. He brought his secretary Michelle with him, the estimate presentation was outstanding they provided me with a folder that included their license & insurances. They offered me a free color consultation to help me with the colors in my restaurant. After meeting 4 other contractors I called Michael the next day to award him the job and to schedule my dates in. He was able to start the dates I wanted and finish the job on time. I can't begin to explain how happy I am with the overall process and the quality of work Michaels Discount painting provided. If you are looking to hire a painting contractor for your home or business take my word that you will not be disappointed. Everyone on his team is polite and friendly and you can really tell that they take pride in their work and care about the customer. Thank Michaels Discount Painting I look forward to working with you on the next one. You

Jose and J Custom Construction were quick, professional, fair, and did quality work. I am a general contractor myself, and was in need of some technical demo work before my remodel. I recommend Jose and his team for any project you might have.

If I could select 5 areas instead of just 3 that I liked about Dave, I would! If you have the opportunity to hire Dave, consider yourself lucky. You’ll feel completely at ease that your project will happen on time and on budget with good communication. And having been a builder hiring and managing contractors for some 10 years on and off...this kind of contractor is rare. I first hired Dave to install the 22 windows in my new construction project. That went extremely well. Then I hired him to paint the house. I wasn’t ready as scheduled and he handled it professionally with understanding. We started 2 days later and he hit it hard. Then I hired him to complete the drywall, mud and tape for 1000sf. Those walls are perfectly smooth...no texture...straight corners. Then he tiled a bathroom with 2’ x 6” tiles and adjoining pebble stone mesh tile. IT IS PERFECT. When the last task was taking longer than expected, Dave’s wife and son jumped in and worked until 11pm to finish when promised. As I say, if you’re reading this then count yourself lucky to have happened across Dave.

As the Project Manager for an upgrade to a condo for resale, I hired Emmy Hyde to do the work. She did a great job! Her attention to detail was impressive and she was very easy to work with. As an Interior Designer, I work with a lot of contractors who assume I know nothing about their trade and often condescend or disregard my opinion. On the contrary with Emmy, even though she knows her trade well. Will definitely hire her again.

After trying to get quotes Robert Lindstrom Nationwide Secure Inc. was the only company to contact me back promptly (I contacted 3 other construction companies none of which called back!) He was very patient with us as our schedules constantly change. Provided excellent expertise on what needed to be fixed. Even waited for a while before was let onto the property. Have not yet booked anything to be repaired but good business begins with excellent "customer service." Because of that will definitely consider for other work we need to get done for commercial office and home repairs.

I had some miscellaneous outdoor work I contracted with this company including tree removal, demo and masonry wall repair/infill. Jason was punctual and professional. We communicated before the contract was carried out, during, and at close out. He was clear and upfront about cost issues. The cost was fairly priced as well as the add services. My advice as a client is to be clear and upfront if you have issues or questions. Most things can be resolved with your contractor if you keep communication lines open. You can always say no or ask them to fix the work if it is not the agreed upon expectations.

Travis did a nice job on refinishing and painting a large built in desk and bookshelves. He did a really good job prepping to protect my new floors and baseboards. He did the full sanding, priming, painting, etc. The finish was clean and consistent. He also stained the inside of the drawers. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is due to some minor inconveniences....he had to postpone/switch dates for family reasons, I needed to be accessible to prepay for materials over the phone, cash vs. check. Overall good experience and his price was fair for the quality of work. Would hire again.

Jeff the Painter did a wonderful job painting the exterior of my house. Of the three quotes I got for the job, his was the lowest. Jeff has a contractor's license for painting. The other companies had licenses but the people who held them lived in Northern California or another state. Jeff assigned a crew to paint my house but Jeff inspected daily and worked with his crew so they knew what to do and in what order. The crew was led by Jeremy and all the crew were polite, efficient, fast, and cleaned up as they went along. Jeff was very easy to do business with. If anything he was too relaxed. Where the other painters provided detailed quotes about what they would or would not do, Jeff's quote merely stipulated the number of colors, that he would paint the house, and the price. That doesn't mean he cut any corners. I had forgotten to ask Jeff to paint the frame of my house numbers (address number) a different color from my house. I mentioned it to Jeremy and he offered to repaint it which he did. Overall I couldn't be happier with the way the job was done and the price I paid. I was thinking about repainting part of the inside of my house myself, but seeing what Jeff can do and how quickly has me thinking of hiring him for the job. I definitely recommend that you hire Jeff The Painter for your painting project.

I found Chris when I was given one of his fliers by a friend who raved about his work. I only deal with licensed contractors, since I've been burned before and there's little recourse when they disappear or change their phone#, plus eventually I have a lot of work I want to get done and I want it all legit in case I need permits,etc... And licenses tell me a person has made the effort to put his time in, learn a trade, and become licensed. It's cost me more money to fix things that have been done sub-par over the years. The paint on my house trim was peeling and I could see the wood was becoming damaged in some areas, which means more money to fix rotted wood, so I was anxious to get the exterior paint done. I shopped around. Chris gave me a fair estimate, plus he was confident in his work and I saw the results at my neighbor's house. I loved that he was very respectful of my house, my yard, clean up, and his work was so clean! He gave me a head's up that some of the wood may be more damaged once he sanded the old paint. He showed me the damaged wood and gave me the option to fix it or not, which of course needed to be done. He replaced some old window sills and window frames. You can't even tell which ones he replaced! Everything matches the other windows! I couldn't be more pleased. After a few weeks I saved some money and was still so excited about the outside of my house finally getting done right that I decided to get some work done in the bathroom. My house is 90 yrs old, the interior walls have plaster not drywall, which many guys don't want to touch, but Chris said "No problem!" it's one of his specialities. He explained what's involved, wrote an estimate, and now I've got one bathroom done and it looks AWESOME! My husband is impressed. We're going to have a dinner party with friends to celebrate. Chris is a solid guy with good old fashioned work ethic. We have only great things to say about his work! After the new year we're going to save money and have a deck built so my husband can barbecue outdoors. Thumbs up times a hundred!

We highly recommend Five Star Painting Company. The estimate was done on the same day and you can review the costs. The crew members made sure that the job was done professionally and on time. The service was exceptional and will use them again for any painting jobs.

I though John communicated very well during our construction project. He was very flexible on any changes. Most contractors are very flaky; not showing up on time or wanting to get paid before the project is completed. You will not go wrong hiring John. He is top shelf.

I needed an odd-sized interior door replaced and a front door repaired. Ron delivered exactly what a contractor should. He: 1) estimated at the work, 2) quoted a very competitive price for labor and materials, and 3) did excellent work on time and on budget. Ron will be the first place I look next time I need repairs made.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
