Hired on Thumbtack

My experience with Shane was awful in every way possible. I hired him to work on a historic Victorian, even though his price was thousands of dollars higher than other bids, after he sold me on his “great attention to detail.” Contrary to his promises, his work was incredibly shoddy, such that I had to bring in other contractors to fix it. Despite his having a completely empty house to work in, he repeatedly failed to meet deadlines that he himself set. He covered the entire house and all contents (furniture, bedsheets, towels, oriental rugs, and art) in dust, failing to take the most basic precautions (such as plastic sheets between workspace and clean space) to protect anything. He often laid sharp tools on wood floors that are over 100 years old, without even putting dropcloth or cardboard under them. He repeatedly brought his large, aggressive dog, despite being told not to. His dog attacked my dog, crapped all over the yard, peed on a rug, and barked ceaselessly such that the neighbors complained. When I raised these issues, Shane made up ridiculous excuses, and made outrageous arguments to try to put the blame on me. I fired him long before the job was done, but after paying him over 90% of the contract. I would have fired him sooner, but was on a deadline and couldn’t get another contractor to take over quickly enough. I wish I’d cut my losses sooner. These photos show just a fraction of the mess and "attention to detail" Shane created in this historic property.
