Hank L. says, "Our bathrooms needed a major upgrade, so I reached out to three contractors for quotes. After speaking with each of them, I ultimately chose Daniel’s team at Clarity Construction. While they weren’t the cheapest option, I’m very glad I made this decision—we’re extremely happy with the results. The process felt well-organized, almost like a technical project with distinct phases: design and implementation. Once the contract was signed, we were added to a WhatsApp group with the entire team, which made communication easy. Responses to questions were always prompt. Jael visited during the design phase. Daniel and Kobi also visited multiple times throughout the implementaiton phase to check progress and address any issues that came up. Our designer, Jael, was wonderful to work with. She was patient, knowledgeable, and thorough, answering all my questions and helping me visualize the space through renderings. She also accompanied me to various showrooms to select the right materials. As with any renovation, things changed once the walls were opened and designs took shape, but Jael guided us through adjustments and minor alterations until the very end. One example: our master bath wall couldn’t accommodate a recessed medicine cabinet, and the surface-mount version took up too much space. We had to reorder mirrors, and the crew kindly removed and reinstalled them. Kobi even went out of his way to pick up the previous mirrors and help return them to Home Depot. Daniel handled challenges with calmness and respect. For instance, the backsplash in our guest bathroom initially wasn’t high enough. I dreaded redoing all the tile behind the vanity, but Daniel suggested adding an additional four inches of tile—a simple, elegant solution that preserved both aesthetics and functionality. For shower doors, Clarity installs premade models at no charge, but since ours were custom, they provided excellent referrals, and we’re very satisfied with the outcome. I also wanted to replace the old master bathroom window, and again, they connected us with a great window company. Their crew even helped install it without any extra cost. Kobi is a genuinely warm and thoughtful project manager. Both he and Daniel responded quickly to our questions, even during evenings and weekends. Their customer service is exceptional—both objectively and from our personal experience. The foreman, Jose, was also patient and accommodating. I had second thoughts about placing a small cabinet near the master bathroom doorway, and he helped move it to the garage, reinforcing it so it could function as a nice standalone cabinet instead. From start to finish, Clarity Construction demonstrated that they truly care about their reputation, the quality of their work, and above all, customer satisfaction."See more

Albena B. says, "My husband and I needed a new kitchen and looked at quite a few companies, and we were so glad to have selected Construction by M&M. Not only did Mateo help us redesign our kitchen to make it look fabulous, but also made the whole process easy. We had no idea what types of products to select to match the design. He assisted every step of the way!! He pays close attention to detail, and even had a project manager to ensure that everything ran smoothly with the installation. We could not be happier with our new kitchen which has transformed my house completely. When people walk in they are blown away at the difference it makes. Amazing what a new kitchen can do to your home. I have recommended Construction by M&M to everyone and would do it all over again with them. They took the time to protect everything and, because I suffer from allergies, they covered the work area to prevent dust from going all over our house. They worked fast, efficiently, very professional. If you are looking to have some remodeling work done, this is definitely the company for you."See more

Aaron Cowdin says, "Our project was a gut remodel of our two level San Francisco Sunset tract home, including the creation of living space out of the unfinished lower level/garage.Before we started working with Realty Builders we had almost given up on being able to remodel our home. We had wasted money working with a design and build firm to get an unworkable design far outside of our budget. We decided to take our project to general contractors and see if anyone thought our plan could be executed, at least in part, for a better price. Some contractors didnt even show up. Some looked at our plans, gave us wildly different quotes, positive and negative, but it just seemed like another job to them. The moment that Victor walked into our home and talked with us about our project, I knew he was interested in more than just a job. He walked through every room and all around the exterior, we talked about the design we had paid for, we talked about how we lived and what we wanted from our remodel. Even at the first meeting he was riffing on our design, walking through ideas, talking about potential issues and how to solve them.A week later, Victor said something that sealed the deal for me. He said, Your design is not good. I can build it for you, but you will end up with a house of depressing little boxes. I want to make a house that you will love. He showed us that he had completely thrown out the original design options and created something new, himself. After many months of engineering, demolition, permitting, construction, material shopping, designs, etc. I am writing this from the home that Victor designed and his crew built. He was 100% right. We love our home. It is bright, airy, built for both entertaining and private spaces, organically connecting both the main floor and our garage level now converted to wonderful living space.Realty worked hard to stick to the contracted price, and for all known items, they did exactly that. Because we were remodeling an old San Francisco home, of course there were surprises and extra options. Each time a surprise came, or an optional change came up, Realty let us know about the change and gave us multiple options with various prices for those options. So while we went somewhat into extra budget, we had a lot of choices in how to meet surprises and how to pay for them.I know nothing about construction, but friends and family who do would often come by the house during construction and comment on the high quality of the work being done. When I was present for inspections, I often heard the inspector make off hand positive comments about the quality of the work. Generally we breezed through inspections for this reason. When there were issues, Realty fixed them. When there were problems, Realty would address them. When some of our subcontractors failed, Realty stepped up and dealt with the failures. We are very satisfied and will work with Realty again."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best general contractor in San Francisco?

First, conduct an online search for qualified general contractors in the San Francisco area. Take a few minutes to review their services and decide which contractors are best suited for you. For example, if you need some electrical work done, search for contractors who have completed electrical projects. If you can’t find enough information on their profiles, send the general contractors a message, read customer reviews and view past project photos.

You should also check to see if the contractor is properly licensed. For example, you can try looking for their license information on their profiles on the Contractors State License Board website. You can also ask the contractors to provide that information.

Finally, ask several contractors in San Francisco to send you free quotes so you can get an idea of how much it will cost to hire a general contractor.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.
