Pete was wonderful with my very skid dish dog. Pete is very patient and calm a Pete was wonderful with my very skiddish dog. Pete is extremely patient, calm and encouraging, and was able to give Georgy a feeling of confidence. He is now walking better with me and not as hypervigilant. Pete gave me me great tools.

Erika is absolutely amazing with my senior golden retriever. Hope loves Erika because she is loving, cautious and very observant of my dog's needs. I am very picky about who I allow to walk my dog due to her health concerns. Erika takes her time and makes sure that all of Hope's needs are taking care of including change of water, and cleaning up any of Hope's "you know what" on our patio. I cannot recommend this young lady enough. Her gracious and calm personality make her highly valuable. She is absolutely dependable and listens to all of the directives I gave her about Hope. Hire her, and do not let her get away, you will not be sorry.

Angela is a fun, quirky lady who really cares about your pup. My little pupper, Rufus, needed a haircut badly, but I could not get an appointment this week or drop him off to his regular groomer in the Fillmore next week. Angela made a house call yesterday and lugged all her gear to my apartment to give my dog a bath and haircut. I offered to help her since she went out of her way and didn’t have her regular assistant with her (also, it would have taken forever!) and let me tell you, if “assistant” grooming is that hard I can only imagine how exhausting the actual grooming is! With me helping her it took a little over 2 hours and it’s not like she took breaks or dragged anything on – my dog, a 22 pound Shih-Poo - took about 2 hours and 25 minutes for: nails, ears, glands, bathing, blow drying and a haircut. She really gets in there and makes sure the paws are on point. She is meticulous in her method and takes the time to assess what the best course of action is for your dog’s haircut. She switches blades often, making sure that she can get rid of matted fur without compromising your dog’s look or safety. Angela was super caring with Rufus, much like how I act with him. I would definitely recommend her skills!

Ryan is awesome. I moved to the area and didn't know anyone. My dogs are so important to me and I was anxious about finding a dog walker to help me out. From the start Ryan was really positive and super nice. He is communicative and flexible. He mixes up the walks by taking my dogs to the dog park and for walks. My schedule can be a little unpredictable and Ryan is always able to adjust. I highly recommend him!

Mary is our full time dog walker, she comes daily to our home during the week and also does overnight stays when we go away. Our dog Beau simply loves Mary (and we do too, of course). Beau literally jumps with excitement every time Mary comes over and practically licks her to death. Mary is dependable, caring beyond belief and knows all about Beau and his personality. She keeps us well informed about anything she notices with him gives us great advice if we are dealing with any "doggie issues". We are lucky beyond measure to have her in our lives and highly recommend her for regular dog walking or pet sitting.

Pam watched our dog for a little over a week while my family and I traveled out of town. The overall experience was smooth and great. Pam was responsive, gave updates a couple times a day and immediately if we asked, and was flexible with pickup and drop off times. Our dog even stayed another unplanned night with no problem! I will use her services again in the future.

I was worried about being able to find a dog walker when I found out my dog is reactive, and I'm very glad I found Erika. My dog improved quickly soon after Erika started walking her. Erika is always on time and lets me know when she is picking up my dog. She sends me updates and photos after the walk. She makes sure my dog is comfortable and having fun during the walk. My dog is a lot calmer when she sees other dogs now and it's fun to take her outside.

Adam was amazing with our dog Ella, both when he house sat for us and when he walks her from time to time. When Adam comes to the door Ella immediately is over the moon excited and knows exactly where to go and sit after she is done saying hello.... yes you got it, next to his car so she can go for a ride and a hike. Adam also surprised me when I got home by having the sheets from the bed he slept in while he was house sitting all washed, folded and sitting on the end of the bed. What a delight not to need to clean up after a house sitter. I give Adam "4 Paws Up"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
